Adidas wants you to run on computation

Adidas wants you to run on computation 05/06/2004 03:07 AM

Adidas is launching a "smart shoe" next December that modifies its support and responsiveness properties in real-time based on performance.

Each second, a sensor in the heel can take up to 20,000 readings and the embedded electronic brain can make 10,000 calculations, directing a tiny electric motor to change the shoe. The goal is to make the shoe adjust to changing conditions and the runner's particular style while in use.

"What we have, basically, is the first footwear product that can change its characteristics in real time," said Mr. DiBenedetto, who led the group that created the shoe, of its ability to adapt its cushioning as the wearer runs.

The Sand Traveler is a rendering of 1,000 traveling particles, each in pursuit of another. Over time, patterns of travel are exposed as sweeping paths of color.

Semantic Knowledge Technologies and Language Computation
http://gate.ac.uk/projects/sek t/

The vision of SEKT is to develop and exploit the knowledge technologies which underlie Next Generation Knowledge Management. The SEKT strategy is built around the synergy of complementary know-how in Ontology and Metadata Technology, Knowledge Discovery and Human Language Technology, along with major European ICT organisations. Specifically, SEKT will deliver software to: semi-automatically learn ontologies and extract metadata, and to maintain and evolve the ontologies and metadata over time; to provide knowledge access; besides middleware to effect integration of all the SEKT components. This has been added to Knowledge Discovery Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This has been added to the semantic research section of Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. cellulite
07/05/2004 06:17 AM
The Masai Barefoot Technology shoe is a big raveware-looking sneaker that changes your gait to something like that of a barefoot Masai treading the grasslands and is rumoured to elliminate cellulite.
The shoe feels strange at first. The top two-thirds of it look like a fairly orthodox running shoe, but the sole is bizarre. Two inches thick at the midpoint of the heel, it tapers gradually toward the toe and swoops upward at the rear, creating a cutoff effect. The wearer steps down on the fat part of the heel, the "sweet spot," and a springy sensor bounces back, encouraging the foot to roll forward toward the toe.

This, we are told, is the gait of the Masai people, renowned for walking great distances as they move their herds of cattle across the savannas of Kenya and Tanzania. They have no apparent cellulite.

I thought you might be interested in hearing about a convertible shoe since you also covered the Strutz high heel shoe. I was at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City and found this company called Blue Away (their website is ) and they've created the world's first hiking shoe. The shoe converts into a hiking sandal and the upper portion can be scrunched up and thrown into a backpack so I guess it's good for those that don't want to carry a lot of weight and space. Check out the photos I took of it; please excuse the low res camera phone quality of them. Pretty cool, huh?

Wow, there's a lot of books about sneakers. Well, more than I would expect anyway. My favorite sneakers were a pair of Nike Air Darwin shoes I bought back in college. They were all-black low tops with a smallish white Swoosh placed backwards right below the ankle, simply designed, very cool-looking, and comfortable. Sneakers these days look either like Jackson Pollack paintings or classic cars (complete with shock absorbers), making... (with comments)

While it doesn't sound quite as fun as PacManhattan, Nike seems to be getting into the spirit of real world/wireless games by coming up with an advertising campaign that will send SMS text messages to mobile phones telling them where they can find a particular poster. When they arrive at the post, they're told to submit the special code on the poster back to Nike. Players get points for both the number of posters they find and the speed with which they get to them. If they "win" they get a chance to "pre-buy" a pair of new Nike sneakers. Winners get the chance to buy something? Doesn't seem like much of a win to me, but maybe I'm just holding out for those smarter sneakers. Also, to be honest, this game doesn't sound like much fun. It sounds sort of like a mobile version of "fetch." They tell you where to go, you go, and you retrieve a code and send it back to them. Where's the challenge?

“The Museum of Hoaxes was established in 1997 in order to promote knowledge about the phenomenon of hoaxes. Why do we (the staff at the museum) care about hoaxes, and why do we think other people should care also? One reason is that we live in an era in which reality and unreality are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish, and the only reliable way to sort out what is real from what is unreal is…

    Toothing was a hoax!

    Toothing was a hoax! 04/04/2005 11:59 PM
David Pescovitz: Earlier today, Jim Hanas, co-creator of Boring Boring, published a post on his blog asking "What ever happened to Toothing?," last year's UK craze where commuters hooked up random sexual encounters via Bluetooth-enabled cellphones. (Wired News story here . Reuters article here. BBC article here.) Surprisingly, Toothy Toothing, the source for many of those original articles, responded to Jim's inquiry. Turns out, Toothy (aka Ste Curran) made the whole thing up. (Or so he claims!):
All we did was register a forum (which has now been taken down by the service provider, but we have a backup) and fill it with fictional posts by fictional Toothing ’sceners. A week later, we had what appeared to be a vibrant UK Toothing community all ready to roll, and I sent the link off to Gizmodo, a gadget blog. They reported it (you can see that first story here, with a credit at the end to ‘S’, my super-subtle pseudonym). Everyone else linked to / blogged / ripped off their story. Things started to roll, and we became a ludicrous, implausible meme. In turn, that brought Real People to our forum. Others created forums for their localities - Sweden, Denmark, Italy, whatever.

A few days later, the print media requests started coming. We kept a record at the start of where we were mentioned, but there were soon too many to record in full. There are hundreds of tiny anecdotes, though. I had to write Penthouse-letters-page style sexual adventure stories for a full page article and interview in The Telegraph.
