DRUMS
05/04/2004 10:57 AMI still haven't found the time to properly grok DRUMS - but here's
a start....
DRUMS:
Scott Mathews Proposes a File-Sharing Solution for Media Metadata.
DRUMS
is here. Scott has been working on Andromedia, an MP3 server system for a while. c|net,
PCUser, techTV, Macworld, ClearChannel, O'Reilly and more have all
used and endorsed that system for streaming your MP3s. Scott's new
idea, which stands for Digital Rights Uniform Metadata Service, is
worth considering and while it's a work in progress, it's a great
start. It's a "new centralized/distributed metadatabase of authored
works."
Essentially, the idea is to create a central database,
along with an authority (or a handful of authorities) that can
add/update it. The root DRUMS database would likely include data such
as author names, work titles, publication dates, types of work, file
checksums, flags indicating which rights remain reserved and which
rights have been granted, and so on. It would not contain the actual
works themselves.
It would then be propogated
across the internet, so that when people release works that are open
for copying, systems will have a metadata reference to check this, and
then maybe check for new releases as well. It would allow DJ's and
others to find works that could be freely shared. Or find works that
are licensed in some particular way, so that people can respond
appropriately.
Send
Scott suggestions as he
considers this a group process.
[unmediated]
I'd be interested in what Brian Zisk, Robert Kaye, Ted Cohen, Lucas
Gonze and other phosters think of this....

inspired by Creative Commons and the goal is to create a P2P network
that is fair to both copyright owners and folks seeking content. If
you have something to add to his proposal, pop on over and drop Scott

06/29/2004 12:04 PMAMSTERDAM -- Microsoft Corp. kicked off its Tech Ed Europe conference
in Amsterdam Tuesday to the thundering cacophony of thousands of
developers and other IT professionals beating on small African drums.
The fact that the drums were provided by Microsoft could be seen as a
move by the company to get customers dancing to its beat, but for many
attendees it represented a change in Microsoft's tune -- the software
giant was finally listening to them.

Why You Should Start Using RSS
06/03/2004 12:23 AMWould a
Big Media Company Lose Traffic if They Supported RSS?
"Almost certainly these are the early days of a developing medium.
By getting into RSS in 2004, you can get ready for what comes next in
2005. I'd argue that not only is it necessary today to be publishing
in RSS, but your organization should also be a user of RSS. Your
editorial, advertising people and execs should subscribe not only to
your own feeds, but also subscribe to those of your competitors and
bloggers. Then in 2005 you'll see with your own eyes what follows and
be able to participate. This may be the most important reason to get
involved with RSS now." [Really Simple

Start of the Season
11/14/2003 01:45 PMIt is believed the decorated Christmas tree originated in 16th century
Germany. In Italy, children place their Christmas letter under their

Brown Christmas.' Nutcracker figurines originated in Germany in the
1700s. 'Jingle Bells' was originally called 'One Horse Open Sleigh.'
December 25 was chosen for the celebration of Jesus' birth by Pope
Julius I in the 4th century. Just a few random facts from the 'Sounds

office for the next month and a half. I can't help but love this
stuff! There are a billion religions on this planet, so I'm "forced"

not to offend anybody. Don't be a Grinch! My stocking will be full

The organizing needs to start now
The organizing needs to start now
02/01/2005 10:03 PMMy favorite quote from Camp Wellstone was Pam Costain's refrain, "Win
or Lose on Nov 2, the organizing needs to start again on November 3."
Zack Exley, former Internet guru on the Kerry campaign, has written
what is destined to be an influential blog post arguing that the
Democrats need to create an effective field operation now: The cheap
shot argument for building a permanent field operation is: "Because
the Republican's have one." It's not clear whether the GOP's long-term
field push had a huge effect on turnout. But it is clear that the
Republicans are building a powerful, permanent field operation -- and
that, at the very least, it's a powerful growing threat. We know that
they started building years ago. We've seen their volunteer training
materials, and have sat in on some of the trainings. They give
volunteers formal roles, hold them accountable for results and
continuously replace the ones who do not perform. What they're doing
is very advanced. If it wasn't a major advantage in 2004, just give
them another four years and see where they are. But we shouldn't need
a Republican threat to motivate us to do the obvious. What is a
political party without a strong, capable grassroots? Just a shell of
a party -- and that's what both the Democratic and Republican parties
were for a very long time. The 2004 election gives the Democrats a
chance to leave that legacy behind. ... Exley goes on to outline what
he call "Ten steps to building a permanent field program with the New
Grassroots." I don't know Exley, or much about his work on the Kerry
campaign, and I've avoided following the internecine battles that have
followed Bush's victory, but the rough outlines make sense to me. We
have hundreds of thousands of people who got involved in politics for
the first time in 2004, and now, because of the internet and the tools
that groups like CivicSpace and CivicActions are building, we have the
capability to organize them, and to enable them to communicate with
each other and organize themselves. As Exley puts it: We're talking
about a totally new form of organization. In the same way that
railroads, highways, the telegraph and the telephone all changed the
maximum size and efficiency of national organizations, so does the
Internet -- "the Internet" being web tools and email. Because of web
tools and...

04/09/2004 04:09 PMSo, the

But.
I booked myself a teleconference at 8 am on Friday - just because I

to change it. ARG! Either timezones, or people who are bad at maths
should be declared illegal. I really, really don't like this timezone

People who are not working for global companies do not know what they

Update: Luckily other people did also screw up with the
calculations (I mean, out of like, five engineers, apparently only TWO
can count!?!?), and so the meeting's off. Phew. Saved by a
calculator.

Lok Technology Announces Immediate Link

03/17/2005 03:01 AMAIRlok upgrade increases number of load balanced uplinks, adds
multi-carrier diversity, and enables redundant high availability
configurations. Lok Technology, the industry’s leading provider of
Integrated Link Management appliances for Wireless Internet Service
Providers, today announced immediate availability of AIRlok Link
Controller. The Link Controller enables a provider to dynamically
increase the number of uplink / down link connections to the Internet
in order to increase the available bandwidth. It also enhances the
provider’s ability to maintain service levels (SLAs) by providing
alternate routing connections to multiple carriers through a single
AIRlok. Prior to introducing the Link Controller, service providers
had to purchase costly load balancing equipment or create multiple
infrastructure stacks when adding bandwidth or implementing route
diversity to their service delivery infrastructure. [PRWEB Mar 17,
