Streamcast CEO Accuses Record Labels Of
Collusion
07/12/2004 04:24 AMAs the recording industry continues their pointless lawsuits to put
the fear of litigation into the hearts of file sharers, it turns out
that
fil
e sharing -- especially of music -- is on the upswing. Even
worse, Streamcast's CEO is presenting evidence to Congress that
the record labels have colluded to create a "blacklist" against
any of the file sharing companies, telling other firms not to work
with the major file sharing companies or risk problems from within the
established industry. This, of course, wouldn't be a surprise, as the
industry has been found guilty of such things in the past. Still,
considering the type of entertainment-industry backed legislation
that's been coming out of Congress these days, they seem mostly
interested in investigating how to prop up a dying industry, rather
than looking into how that industry is colluding to keep out
competition.

11/10/2003 11:16 PMFrom Jeffrey Tarter comes new of an important new business model for
outsourcing software development. Joe Grossberg thinks the Primate
Programming page has "racist overtones." I can see that way of taking
it, although (I hope obviously) that's not how I took it. I take it as
being about the commodification of software development and a
Dilbert-esque swipe at the gullibility and irresponsibility of
pointy-haired bosses....

POLITENESS, n. The most
acceptable hypocrisy. On this day Ambrose Bierce was born in 1842
in Ohio. The author famous for
The Devil's Dictionary
was a Civil War vet who despite being wounded in the head moved to
San Francisco where he began a successful career in journalism,
writing cynical columns, fighting publisher William Randolph Hearst,
and ultimately serving the first blow upon the railroad industry whose
political muscle had grown obscene. A decade later, the family man
whose wife was from one of the most well-to-do families in the City,
dissapeared probably in Mexico never to be seen or heard from again.

Primate Kinematics and Humanoid Robots
05/30/2004 07:13 PMNASA's Robert O. Ambrose has co-authored a new research paper titled
Primate
Anatomy, Kinematics, and Principles for Humanoid Design (PDF
format). The paper investiages the theory that kinematics,
musculature,
perception, and cognition can be optimized for specific tasks by
varying
the proportions of limbs. Known as the Bifurcated Chain Hypothesis,
the
idea is that the proportions of humans made them superior to other
primates and animals at specific tasks such as tool-making. Ambrose
has
studied body
articulation and its application to robotics for some time. You may
also recognize his name from the NASA Robonaut project.

Following up on
yesterday's post about an apparent bit of political humor on the
Harvard Primate Neuroscience Lab's website, one BoingBoing reader
wrote in to tell us that a relative worked at the lab -- and confirmed
that indeed, the chimp-to-Dubya morph was no accident. Also,
BoingBoing reader
Chris
Holland says:
That "image" at the top-right corner actually is a scaled-down display
of a bigger quicktime movie ... for a more dramatic effect. Now if I
could only dig out that morphing I did when I was a kid of Claudia
Schiffer and Cindy Crawford.

Security Concerns
Security Concerns
05/25/2004 08:40 AMMac OS X users have been hit by a barrage of security concerns and
exploits over the last week. Most of these issues stem from the
discovery last week of the
URI Handler Arbitrary Code
Execution vulnerability.
To close this hole you should at least download and install
Apple’s Security Update 2004-05-24 (for
Jaguar &
Panther). Software Update will also pick up the
correct version for your system. Further protection can be taken by
using
RCDefaultApp
to disable the follow protocols :
While you’re using
RCDefaultApp
, it’s probably wise to change the default handler for the
ftp protocol from the Finder to an FTP application (eg.
Transmit or Interarchy etc.).
For complete and thorough analysis on how and why this can happen,
read these posts on Daring Fireball :
