New Design Tinkering
New Design Tinkering
04/17/2005 04:38 AMI'm playing with a new design for this site. My old site was
basically a "temple of ego" that covered just about everything I was
doing online and when I stripped it all away to start over, I knew
eventually I wanted to bring back a bit of the clutter.
I just started working on this CSS monstrosity and it's only
applied to the main index page at present, but I hope to refine it
over the following week and mold it into something more attractive and
orderly. For now, I figured I might as well redesign in public, warts
and all.
Oh, and be sure to use Firefox or Safari to view it, IE/win can't
understand any of the first-child, first-line CSS nor any of the png
backgrounds.

Tinkering with the Tyranny of Copyright
02/11/2004 07:52 AMTinkering with the Tyranny of Copyrighthttp://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/25/magazine/25COPYRIGHT.html William Fisher, director of the Berkman Center for Internet
and Society at Harvard Law School, has turned his attention to solving
the seemingly intractable conflict between the recording industry and
file-sharing music fans. His proposed plan, which would enable the
entertainment industry to restructure its business model without
resorting to micropayments, could also have ramifications for
copyrighted digital text-based content. As a first step, all works
capable of being transmitted online would be registered with a central
office, which would then monitor how frequently the work is used. The
work's creator would be compensated on that basis using funds
collected via a tax on various content-related devices, such as DVDs,
blank CDs or digital recorders. Fisher agrees that such a radical
overhaul of the current system would be difficult in today's
tax-phobic political environment, but he says that his ideas have been
received with great interest by the music and home video industries
whose business models are under siege. Fisher says that the likeliest
locale for putting his ambitious scheme to work would be in countries
such as Croatia or Brazil, which are neither so developed that they
have signed on to international copyright protocols nor so
underdeveloped that they are desperate to do so. "The hope is in the
rainforest," says Fisher, in countries that "are more like the United
States was before 1890, when we were a 'pirate' nation." As to whether
such a system would ever work in the U.S., Fisher says perhaps after
the various current schemes fail, his approach will be more
attractive: "What is involved here is nothing less than the shape of
our culture and the way we think of ourselves as citizens."

tinkering with modified router firmware upgrades to incorporate
bandwidth management and a host of other free improvements. This

Gates: Microsoft Will Build
Interoperable Software By Design
Gates: Microsoft Will Build
Interoperable Software By Design
02/05/2005 09:46 PMIn an email to business chiefs made public today, Bill Gates, Chairman
of Microsoft, discussed the companies plans to make their software
more interoperable with other systems.
"
Interoperability is more pragmatic than other
approaches, such as attempting to make all systems compatible at
the code level, focusing solely on adding new layers of middleware
that try to make all systems look and act the same, or seeking to make
different systems interchangeable. With a common understanding of
basic protocols, different software can interact smoothly with little
or no specific knowledge of each other. The Internet is perhaps the
most obvious example of this kind of interoperability, where any piece
of software can connect and exchange data as long as it adheres to the
key protocols.
Simply put, interoperability is a proven approach for dealing with the
diversity and heterogeneity of the marketplace. Today I want to focus
on two major thrusts of Microsoft’s product interoperability strategy:
First, we continue to support customers’ needs for software that works
well with what they have today. Second, we are working with the
industry to define a new generation of software and Web services based
on eXtensible Markup Language (XML), which enables software to
efficiently share information and opens the door to a greater degree
of "interoperability by design" across many different kinds
of software.
Our goal is to harness all the power inherent in modern (and not so
modern) business software, and enable them to work together so that
the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We want to further
eliminate friction among heterogeneous architectures and applications
without compromising their distinctive underlying
capabilities."
Gates continued to talk about how Microsoft planned to implement these
ideas, and how it already had; Gates pointed to Office 2003 as an
example of the company making use of XML technology. He also made the
point that "
interoperability is also confused with open source
software". Microsoft face tough competition from Linux based
products which are open source and allow users to modify the
underlying system code. Part of the recent European Union judgement on
Microsoft involved making the company make it easier for other
software vendors to inter opt with their products. Previous messages
from Gates delivered in a similar manner have proved to be major
policy changes for Microsoft.
