It's not the network, but what you do
with it

Why?

I used to post these visualizations and think "how cool".  But now I think "why?"

-------------------

Vizster: beautiful YASNS visualizations.

For his visualization class final project, Jeff Heer created Vizster, a visualization tool for online social networks. The tool allows you to explore the network and color-code the data to make easy comparisons. It's built on top of Jeff's toolkit called Prefuse.

(PS: Vizster is not currently available for download and Jeff is on a well-deserved vacation so don't bug him until June. But definitely check out his other projects)

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

linksys_nslu.jpg imageWhile they're promoting it with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45 (regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.

Why We Need Network Neutrality

Why We Need Network Neutrality 03/14/2005 06:12 PM

Vonage, the leading independent US VOIP provider, has complained to the FCC that a broadband access provider is blocking the ports it uses to provide service.

I and others have been raising concerns for some time that broadband platform owners will use their control of the physical and logical layers of the network to preclude innovation and competition at higher layers. We've been told this is a fantasy, and that no broadband provider would have an incentive to do so. Maybe we were right.

E-print Network

E-print Network 12/07/2003 06:28 PM
E-print Network
http://www.osti.gov/eprints/
The E-print Network is a set of powerful tools that facilitate access to and use of scientific and technical e-prints communicating the results of a wide range of research activities of interest to the Department of Energy. These e-prints reside on thousands of Web sites and data bases, both large and small, at remote locations worldwide, employing a wide variety of technologies, architectures, platforms, formats, software, and search engines to manage and retrieve data. The E-print Network pulls these vast and widely dispersed data together through a Deep Web search capability that allows the patron to search across and into full text as it resides at the various hosting sites and, using the technical capabilities available at each site, returns results that can be combined, assimilated, and used in support of scientific research. In addition, access is provided to a vast store of e-print information available on the Web through a browse capability across more than ten thousand sites.

The E-print Network, however, is more than a source for scientists and engineers to find, assimilate, and use scientific and technical e-prints in their fields of interest. Also central to research efforts are the interpersonal activities which occur on a one-to-one basis, in small groups, in classrooms and seminars, and at large or small conferences. These interpersonal activities are in fact research communications, too, and it is frequently through these research communications that much of the strategically important activities in which researchers engage are shared.
