The original iMac is dead

The original iMac is dead 03/19/2003 10:25 PM

After five years, it looks Apple has finally killed off the original iMac. And about time too, we never really thought the original iMac to be deserving of all the hype, and certainly the design trends it inspired (remember how three years ago everything looked like an iMac?) won't be missed at all.

Google, circa 1998

Google, circa 1998 05/02/2004 03:25 PM

Thanks to the ever impressive Internet Archive (did you know they host old public information films as well?) here's Google's homepage from 1998. Their searchable index was slightly less than 25 million pages, their hardware was less than a dozen machines apparently held together with lego and their crawler was called BackRub. Following the links will take you to Sergey and Larry's homepages, where digging a little deeper will even uncover the now infamous Sergey-in-drag photo.

My favourite insight though comes from the Legos page (why do American's insist on adding an 's'?) on Larry's site:

I attriubute a great deal of my understanding and ability with mechanical devices to Legos and similar construction toys.

I've often thought that the most important factor in leading me to geek-hood, apart from a C64, was a serious obsession with Lego Technic from an early age.

I've avoided posting about the Google IPO because know nothing of the world of finance, but you've gotta love that Google's initial IPO valuation is e * 10 ^ 9.

History of Web Search from 1998 to 2005

History of Web Search from 1998 to 2005 04/15/2005 06:25 PM
Jan Pedersen at the Infonortics Search Engines ConferenceSearch has grown substantially, gone from a few million documents to at least five billion, at least 400 million queries per day worldwide, hundreds of thousands of machines engaged. The relevance, as defined by user search satisfaction, has become good (enough). The very first web search engines were fairly simple word matching, the later generations more tuned for relevance. They used techniques like proximity weighting, anchor text (links pointing to the page), and incoming links (later including Google page ranks). Note that the process of constructing a webwide search index is a very complex activity: lots of network traffic, analysis, reads and writes.User Interface in the 1998 version of Infoseek are much the same as 2005 search results. The main changes are a "dynamic abstract" -- matching search terms in page context, and cached pages.Other changes - targeted advertising successful business model, search can be a priority. Moore's law and a switch from big iron servers to relatively small servers in vast farms.

New original sf on Futurismic

New original sf on Futurismic 07/01/2004 03:34 AM
Futurismic, the excellent sf writers' group blog that's been publishing original fiction, has just published a new story by Ruth Nestvold, an excellent up-and-comer. Jeremy sez, "Also, we opened up our second reading period for new fiction from now until July 31. We pay US$100 per story. Guidelines are at http://www.futu rismic.com/about/guidelines.html and the submission form is at http://www. futurismic.com/contact/index.html#submit"
The reasons I volunteered were hardly simple. When are our motivations ever straightforward? I wanted to prove my own theories of gender and identity, solve one of those big riddles of the universe — are men and women really from different planets? is it nature or nurture? — but there was also the simple element of curiosity. No one had ever acquired both the body and the brain of the opposite sex. And I admit, being the first had a strong attraction for me, doing something that would earn me a place in the history books, put me next to Doreen Kimura and Sigmund Freud.

MOSIX is a management system that allows a cluster of x86 nodes to perform like a parallel computer. It is particularly suitable to run intensive computing and massive I/O applications. In a MOSIX system there is no need to modify applications, link them with any library, or even assign processes to different nodes. It is done automatically, just "fork and forget", like in an SMP system. MOSIX is geared toward improved performance, overhead-free scalability and ease-of-use.

They expect it to be out within six months. Others expect it to be cracked within six months and one day. Once again, isn't it nice to know that these companies are spending so much time and money to make products less useful for consumers?
