Sharing the home-user wifi with
neighbours?
11/15/2003 05:42 PMI have bought a wireless adsl modem router, and a wifi card for my
laptop. I'm wondering what people have to say, about the benefits,
and problems, with sharing a wifi with neighbours, and what you have
to say about the best approach to getting this done! For example,
in a typical london residential area, people don't know their
neighbours, and I certainly would be shy to talk to them! I suppose a
wifi may be a good icebreaker, to get together?

04/09/2004 03:57 PMWP. In response to the challenge of non-state
networks intent on the destruction of the nation-state system, the US
formulated its own non-state actors. These corporate mercenaries
are now creating their own network in response to US
inaction.
Under assault by insurgents and unable to rely on U.S. and
coalition troops for intelligence or help under duress, private
security firms in Iraq have begun to band together in the past 48
hours, organizing what may effectively be the largest private army in
the world, with its own rescue teams and pooled, sensitive
intelligence.
The CPA's program management office has sought bids for a
project to coordinate security among the 10 largest prime contractors
and their subcontractors working on U.S.-backed reconstruction
projects worth $18.4 billion. But the bids are still under review. In
the meantime, the office is "trying to get at least some level of
intelligence sanitized from the military that could be given to
contractors," said Capt. Bruce A. Cole, spokesman for the program
management office in Baghdad. That has not happened yet. The
firms, stunned by the casualties they suffered this week and by the
lack of a military response, have begun banding together to share
their own operations-center telephone numbers and tips on threats, as
well as to organize ways to rescue one another in a crisis.
"Each private firm amounts to an individual battalion," said
one U.S. government official familiar with the developments. "Now they
are all coming together to build the largest security organization in
the world."

Home network complexity challenges
customer satisfactionStudy finds that
installation complexity – quantified by
“help desk” calls – reduces both
satisfaction with and brand loyalty to
home networking products and services
09/04/2004 02:40 AMCustomer satisfaction and brand loyalty regarding home networking
equipment are related directly to product ease of installation and
operation, according to Parks Associates’ Primary Perspectives:
Complexity and Customer Satisfaction in the Networked Home. The study
finds that satisfaction declines precipitously – as much as 25% – if a
customer is required to make two or more service calls to install and
operate home network equipment. Progress has been made in simplifying
these products through standard device drivers and graphics-based
installation wizards, but in order to secure long-term success in this
market, developers and providers should continue devising new ways to
reduce the complexity of home networking solutions. [PRWEB Sep 4,

New Network Tool Tries To Block Illegal
File Sharing
04/21/2004 12:54 PMPalisade Systems appears to be the first network monitoring company to
license Audible Magic's technology for identifying song files, and
claims that their new tool can
stop illegal song
file transfers in their tracks. There are a few other companies
out there like Palisade, and I imagine they're all working on
something similar. Announcements like this make the RIAA happy, but
are unlikely to do very much. As the article points out, the
technology doesn't work on encrypted systems - which is where file
sharing programs are rapidly headed. Also, the company still hasn't
demonstrated how well the technology works. It's likely that active
file sharers will figure out ways around it within a day, making the
technology somewhat worthless in the long run. Meanwhile, people who
will get stopped are those who aren't necessarily trying to do
anything illegal, but are just doing things like emailing themselves a
song, so they can shift it from one computer to another. Once again,
the industry will end up pushing file sharers further underground, but
it's unlikely this will do much to slow down file sharing.

Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
05/05/2004 03:44 PMComcast will install Wi-Fi gear, configure a router, and rent it to
their customers with new program: Comcast Home Networking includes the
delivery and installation of Wi-Fi networking for a setup fee and $5
per month (covering the router and one PC Card). Setup costs $200 for
two computers up to $300 for five computers, the maximum covered by
this deal. A current discount program chops $100 off that price until
June 1. The terms and pricing don't explain the rental fee for the
second through fifth computers' hardware, referring to a "rate card"
that isn't on the Web site. The installation includes configuring and
setting a WEP encryption key for the network, a task which with
certain equipment can cause grown men and women to weep. There's
definitely a place for a service in which the equipment is covered
against defects. The site for the program doesn't note this, but
Comcast's overarching subscriber terms says, During the term of this
Agreement, Comcast will repair and maintain all Comcast Equipment and
you agree that the Comcast Equipment will not be serviced by anyone
other than Comcast employees or agents. Part of the press release
noted that this package, offered as $52.95 per month excluding the
rental fees and install fees, has up to 4 Mbps download speeds and 384
Kbps upload speeds. The basic package is $42.95 per month for 3 Mbps
down and 256Kbps up. These prices require a Comcast cable
subscription; it's $10 extra per month without such a subscription.
(Macintosh users need not apply.) Qwest DSL's comparable service is
$39.99/month for 1.5 Mbps down, 896 Kbps up (with Qwest phone
service). Qwest also offers a wireless option with less support and no
installation but without the rental cost: you just buy an Actiontec
device with 802.11g and DSL modem support built in....
