of Games for Windows
05/06/2004 12:00 AM

Microsoft Corp. will continue breaking ground in the computer gaming arena next week, as Games for Windows® establishes its presence at the interactive entertainment industry's largest trade show, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The new Games for Windows booth will showcase platform-defining titles for Windows and make Microsoft the first company to host two booths in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center. The booth (No. 968) will feature 20 games from the hottest publishers in the industry, including Electronic Arts Inc., Atari Inc. and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. "By concentrating all these great games in a single location, you can get an immediate sense of the excitement happening on Windows," said Dean Lester, general manager of Windows Graphics and Gaming Technologies at Microsoft. "These titles represent just a small sample of the incredible innovation developers are bringing to the Windows platform -- a platform that delivers deep, detailed experiences."

The reply was that Microsoft is working on an emulator that will allow Windows users to run Unix.

Pickup Games, The Reckoning - Strange
Adventures in Infinite Space

Pickup Games, The Reckoning - Strange
Adventures in Infinite Space
06/18/2004 10:01 PM

sais.jpg
Well, my week is up, and I've saved as a parting shot the ultimate pickup game: Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, developed by Digital Eel and published by Cheapass Games. Games take just minutes.

There's not as much brain power required as there is in the other games from this week; in fact your score really has more to do with luck than anything else. But despite having probably less strategy involved than a game of Freecell, SAIS feels like it's smarter than it is, because it recalls elements of games with more depth, with its goals of space exploration, combat, trade and collection.

The demo is pretty crippled compared to the full version, but the full version costs only $15. Well, the PC and Mac versions do. There's PocketPC and PalmOS versions too (new Tapwave Zodiac owners take note!), available from Astraware for $19.99.

And with that fifth and final recommendation, I'm done! All five of the games I've mentioned this week are great for spending a few minutes with, but so playable that you'll be able to play for hours. Have fun, Gizmodo!

Back when I was promoting Dancing Barefoot, (which has gotten a really nice bounce in sales this last week -- I'm sure because of WWdN readers -- so thank you!) I talked about it a LOT on my site. Partly, that was because Barefoot-related things dominated my life at the time . . . but it was also because I've been told (and experienced firsthand) that books only sell as well as their authors promote them. This is the best way I have to promote my books on my own, so I'm going to do that in the coming months. I just want to be honest about that right now. If this sort of thing bugs you, stop reading now, and go check out the best combination since Gretzky and Kurri: They Might Be Giants and Homestar Runner. Seriously, you guys.

Infinity Plugin 0.6.1 (Default branch)

Infinity Plugin 0.6.1 (Default branch) 04/15/2005 08:04 PM
Screenshot Infinity is a visualization plugin with light effects for the XMMS audio player. It supports full-screen mode, mouse resizing, and saved preferences. It is designed to be as end-user oriented as possible, so installation and manipulation are kept simple. It requires SDL and GTK+ 1.2 to run, and doesn't require 3D acceleration support.
Changes:
Some modules have been examined in depth using tools like splint and valgrind, many cleanups have been performed, and two serious bugs have been fixed: a memory leak and a semaphore that was released too early. This release also fix bugs #1105207 and #1106762, related to 64-bit architectures.
