Chapter 7: Creating Mobility-Aware Longhorn Applications

Chapter 7: Creating Mobility-Aware

Chapter 7: Creating Mobility-Aware
Longhorn Applications
05/06/2004 12:00 AM

Mobility is another major theme of Longhorn. Laptops, notebooks, and Tablet PCs are specific and identifiable hardware form factors that support scenarios distinct from those supported by desktop PCs. Mobile PCs comprise a large and growing segment of the overall PC market. Mobile PCs make up about 30 percent of the worldwide PC market now, and the segment is growing more rapidly than desktops. In absolute terms, shipments of mobile PCs in the United States and Western Europe have increased year after year, whereas desktop shipments have declined (IDC PC Tracker, June 2002). Given that laptops cost more than desktops and given an economy in which the overall PC market is shrinking, the growth of laptop shipments and share is a striking and important trend.

(Longhorn)
01/07/2004 06:20 PM
The preceding chapter put forward the recommendation that moving to managed code can provide immediate benefits as well as make a long term investment that aligns with the technology foundation of "Longhorn" moving forward. With this in mind, many organizations have a large investment in an existing unmanaged code base such as MFC or COM. Thus, the interoperability between .NET and COM is critical.

Content-aware search

Content-aware search 02/10/2004 02:49 AM
At InfoWorld's 2002 CTO Forum, Google co-founder Sergey Brin threw cold water on the idea of instrumenting content for intelligent search. "I'd rather make progress by having computers understand what humans write," he said, "than by forcing humans to write in ways that computers can understand." Brin's pragmatic stance sharply opposes the idealistic view of the Web's inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, who continues to evangelize his vision of a Semantic Web full of carefully encoded content that we can precisely search and fluidly recombine. My own humble contribution to this debate is a prototype search engine, now running on my Weblog, that tries to steer a middle course between the Scylla of simple fulltext search and the Charybdis of unwieldy tagging schemes and brittle ontologies. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
I keep trying out phrases to capture what I'm aiming for. One is 'dynamic categories,' another is 'interoperable content.' Probably neither will stick, because these only describe how to do something, not why. The why, of course, is productivity. ...

Jonathan 'Wolf' Rentzsch: "Files that end in .command are mapped to Terminal.app in Mac OS X. If their executable flag is set, they are automatically executed. The usefulness of these double-clickable files are somewhat limited as it's nonobvious how to get them to act on the contents of the folder they live in. For your pleasure, here's a technique to make the script cd into the folder where it lives, ready to process its neighboring files."
