Humanoid Body Pillow Part Deux

Humanoid Body Pillow Part Deux 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

DSC03063.jpgEagle-eyed reader Bronek sent us this photo of another Japanese huggy pillow designed to comfort the wearer in times of extreme need. The head goes through a loop at the top and an elongated part goes between the legs. The resulting pretzel may make it hard to get off of the futon during a fire but it also means you look like a freak while sleeping.

Naked Lady Sushi, part deux.

Naked Lady Sushi, part deux. 11/12/2003 02:56 PM
Seattle sushi restaurants aren't the first to serve food on the bodies of naked women, nor are various Japanese porn sites displaying X-rated human sashimi platter tableaus. Boingboing pal Eli the Bearded points us to this image by William Klein: Photograph of Models and the Surrealist Group around Meret Oppenheim's "Festin," 1960. The image was a fashion shot for Vogue magazine, under the title of Inaugural Feast in the March 1960 issue.

Porn art-remixes part deux: Safe For
Work
05/30/2004 01:45 AM
Those French "pornotuning" remixes aren't the first time someone with a pinch of snark and a penchant for pr0n got jiggy with Photoshop. For instance, this somethingawful riff from a couple of years back: "Make Porn Work-Safe." Results included the bizarre goatse-esque mashup shown here, which suggests a rollicking three-way between Man Ray, Terry Richardson, and Betty Crocker. BoingBoing reader Phil points us to the archived gallery and says, "Basically, they hacked pornopix just enough to make them (at least theoretically) safe for work."

John Lautner's Chemosphere: part
Jetsons, part Bond and vintage L.A.
Modern.
04/07/2005 12:53 PM
The most modern home built in the world. "From the outside it looks like a spaceship you cannot enter. But if you go inside, it feels very cozy… very Zen and calming. Maybe because you are floating above the city, in the sky". John Lautner's Chemosphere residence is the product of a fortuitous union of architect, client, time and place. Leonard Malin was a young aerospace engineer in late-1950s L.A. whose father-in-law had just given him a plot north of Mulholland Drive, near Laurel Canyon. The only catch: at roughly 45 degrees, the slope was all but unbuildable. Lautner sketched a bold vertical line, a cross, and a curve above it. "Draw it up," he told his assistant. Now publisher Benedik t Taschen owns Chemosphere (NSFW), and after 20 years of neglect the house has been beautifully restored (.pdf) by Frank Escher.

Stream of Consciousness

Stream of Consciousness 03/13/2003 05:58 AM

I have yet to enter Proto Merkabah. I was going to sit down and play Xenosaga, but I was dealing with a crash in the new CSS parser caused by some of you Web freaks using :not (a CSS3 selector supported by Mozilla). The syntax of this selector is such that it isn't compatible with the CSS2.1 grammar, so I added rules to recognize :not.

Once I did that I realized I was about 10 lines away from implementing :not. Ok, so 12 lines later (yes, it did turn out to be a little bigger than I thought, turns out :not can't nest for no apparent reason I can discern), :not came into being in Safari.

So of course then I had to test :not, which meant I had to go load the CSS3 test suite. As I started flipping through pages I found all sorts of bugs with some of the selectors like the ~= selector, and then I stumbled on all these brainlessly easy selectors that Safari just didn't support.

Well, that just pissed me off, so I went and implemented :empty, :root and ::selection. Yes, I am just that random. Maybe I'll do some of the other CSS3 selectors if I have time.

Anyway, back to Xenosaga. I've played enough poker at the casino to afford the 300,000 GP AWGS, and I got Shion's super Ether attack that involves the summoning of a giant robot called Erde Kaiser. I think he's supposed to be intimidating and just generally badass, but I think he looks like a giant Transformer.

Add to that the fact that he's brightly colored and seems to be built out of Lego blocks, and you just really don't have a recipe for intimidation.

The game still rocks though. :)

How to Stream Media

How to Stream Media 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

Streaming audio/video from a web server: A couple of years ago, I spent hours tracking down the information that's on this page. I wish I had found it back then. Very handy.

Streaming can be initiated with the help of redirector files. Linking to the redirector file will cause the associated player software to start on the client computer (if it's properly set up), and playback will start almost immediately (after buffering a small amount of data). Note that the player software will only start if a user has selected to play the media, this is a big advantage compared to embedded media.
