(v 2)
05/07/2004 01:56 AM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently a Release Candidate in Beta testing, includes significant enhancements to the Windows Firewall component, previously known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based firewall that discards unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level of protection for computers against malicious users or programs. To provide better protection for computers connected to any kind of network (such as the Internet, a home network, or an organization network), Windows XP SP2 enables Windows Firewall on all network connections by default. This new behavior can impair some types of communications. This article describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration settings for Windows Firewall on an organization network so that it is enabled and providing protection, and so that communications are not impaired.

RMS allows information workers to distribute information within their organizations and define how and under what circumstances it can be used, such as when it expires and who can open, modify, print and forward it. The ability to express and enforce document-level protection will allow organizations to internally share information more broadly, with less risk of inadvertent or intentional misuse.

Today at its Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft Corp. introduced Windows® Marketplace, an upcoming shopping and downloading site that will provide customers with one-stop access to software, hardware and peripherals that work with the Windows platform. This new offering provides a cost-effective way for participating partners to work with Microsoft and CNET Networks to gain exposure to millions of potential customers through online shopping and electronic software distribution -- all in one place. Windows Marketplace also will make it easy for customers to navigate, find, try and buy thousands of compelling products to meet their needs and enhance their Windows computing experience. Windows Marketplace is scheduled to launch to end-user customers in the United States this fall, but Microsoft is giving partners an early opportunity to get their products into the Marketplace before it becomes available publicly.

01/08/2004 07:36 PM
Today at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow (formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

MSFT won't Sasser-patch bootleg Windows

MSFT won't Sasser-patch bootleg Windows 05/07/2004 03:35 AM
Microsoft's anti-Sasser-worm patch can't be applied to copies of Windows with serial numbers associated with bootleg or fake copies. It's an interesting dilemma for MSFT: the more unpatched copies of Windows (whether legit or not) the worm infects, the worse it becomes for all unpatched users, including those who paid their license fees. It's like denying smallpox vaccinations to known crooks, then having to pay the social cost of the smallpox outbreak that infects everyone who hasn't had a shot (including honest cits). Validating HTML

Validating HTML 06/05/2004 07:34 AM

I've been playing around with the W3C HTML validator, and I've found, sadly, that there's no easy way to get this page to validate. There were some problems that I fixed, but when I try to validate against 4.01 Transitional, I get about 50 errors related to the use of "&" in URLs.

Apparently you're supposed to use the HTML entity for the ampersand ("&") even in URLs. But since this entitiy isn't present in the URL in the address bar of the browser, and that's where you generally copy the URL from, how are you supposed to convert these without manually picking through every URL you use? You could try to get funky with regular expressions, but I can't imagine that would work perfectly in every case.

This brings up a larger point in that you can't really expect to validate a site where a large part of the HTML of the page is provided by people other than the original Web developer. Every entry on this page — comprising the entire middle section — can be entered by someone else, and how can I make sure they're entering valid HTML markup?

This is where HTML Tidy integration will work very well in PHP 5. Using this tool, you can validate HTML that people enter before you store it in the database, or before you output it. You can make sure all tags are closed, all tags match, etc. so perhaps you can hope for some sort of valid markup.

But, in an even larger sense, does validation matter much? I've never gotten any comment from anyone about the validation of this site. So what that I'm throwing 50 errors because of ampersands in URLs — can someone provide me with a valid (excuse the pun) reason why this matters?

I understand problems can occur from gross misuse of the HTML spec, but are all validation errors created equal? My apparent misuse of ampersands has got to rank pretty low on the sin list.

Validating a Custom DTD

Validating a Custom DTD 02/01/2005 09:28 PM
In his article in this issue, Peter-Paul Koch proposes adding custom attributes to form elements to allow triggers for specialized behaviors. The W3C validator won't validate a document with these attributes, as they aren't part of the XHTML specification. Not to worry! This article will show you how to create a custom DTD that will add those custom attributes, and will also show you how to validate documents that use those new attributes.

Judge Rules On Bootleg Law

Judge Rules On Bootleg Law 09/25/2004 12:02 PM
Fans of live music received a helping hand from Judge Harold Baer Jr today as he struck down a lawsuit brought against a New York record dealer. Under previous Bootleg law, the RIAA had brought a lawsuit against the dealer for selling recordings of live shows; the dealer was convicted in 2003 yet appealed the ruling.

He was convicted of "unauthorised recordings of live performances by certain music artists through his business". However, with today's ruling the decision was over turned. Judge Baer Jr commented that the previous law had provided "seemingly perpetual protection" and was thus invalid. He also described it as “unfair”.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), an industry lobby group, announced that they were disappointed with the ruling, and would be reviewing the decision. Spokesman Jonathan Lamy said "It stands in marked contrast to existing law and prior decisions that have determined that Congress was well within its constitutional authority to adopt legislation that prevented trafficking in copies of unauthorised performances of live music."

We found lots of neat-o bootleg crap, including these awesome framed pirat e gangsta artworks (bad unauthorized photocopy of a still from Scarface on one side, and little diorama of toy machine gun, fake money, and blinged out bullets on the other side). Other finds included scrol ling digital LED belt buckles, clothing stores promising plus size fashions for "Phat Women", toy laptops running pirated warez, and much more. The best we can't blog yet... stay tuned for a report on the best booty of pirate-town, slated to run in Wired News on Tuesday (with photos shot by Sean and Jeff).
