Baby, we were born to run against Bush More than 20 artists, including Bruce Springsteen, the Dave Matthews Band, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, James Taylor and the Dixie Chicks, announced the launch of a ``Vote For Change'' tour yesterday. "A vote for Bush is a vote for a divided, unstable, paranoid America,'' Dave Matthews said in one of the more strongly worded statement....

Yulia Timoshenko (her personal website) is the new premier of Ukraine (bio). She is the hippest politician I've ever laid my eyes on. Here is a picture of her giving a speech to the Ukrainian parliament when it approved her nomination to the premiership. Here's another picture of her being insufferably hip. Russia has issued an international arrest warrant for her through Interpol, but who cares when she's this cool? Don't you wish you had politicians who dressed like that? Strike that. Don't you wish you had politicians who could dress like that?

It works for the Patrician, why not for us? Diebold's been in the news again, this time because the most recent California election (and Terminator references aren't really appropriate -- it seems more like something out of a Phillip K. Dick novel) that used machines whose software wasn't certified by the state elections board. (Most, but not all, of the machines met the federal standards, but that doesn't really matter as it wasn't a federal election. The state wins here) Including LA county, which last I heard has just a few people living in it. LA's machines were neither state...

Wizbang, a blog started by Kevin Aylward in April, is running a "Best Weblogs" contest — wouldn't you if your last name were "Award" with an extra YL added? — that, through a set of spelling errors and typos, nominates Joho as best overall blog. I assume they meant "Best All-Over Blog." On the other hand, Joho is 20th out of 20 (11 votes as opposed to Little Green Footballs at #1 with 2,435 and kottke.org at #2 with 1,972) , so there is some justice. You are allowed to vote once a day until December 15. And good...

A better way to vote?

A better way to vote? 06/28/2004 11:01 PM
Looks like a minority liberal government for Canada. The entire process will have been completed in a single day. The voters used pencils to mark X's on paper ballots, which were stuffed into ballot boxes then counted by hand. Despite the differences in population, is there a lesson here for our southern neighbours?

I live in the 12th Congressional District in California. We're a pretty sensible (you might call us liberal) bunch. Over 80% oppose the war. Almost 70% oppose the "Patriot Act." Yet our Congressman -- a wonderful and amazing figure, Tom Lantos -- doesn't vote the way his district thinks. He has supported the war. He has supported the Patriot Act. I haven't done this before, and I'm not going to do this much again, but this gap between who we are and how we are represented has led me to help Congressman Lantos' opponent -- Ro Khanna. Ro's a bright, young, committed Democrat, committed to representing the views of his district. He's got a blog. And a friend and I are going to have a party for him at my house on February 9. If you'd like to come, send an email.

Canada considers electoral reform. The Law Commission of Canada just released a report that recomended a Mixed Member Proportional system much like that one that New Zealand recently adopted. Along with the steps being taken at the federal level, the provinces are at various stages in the process. The government in Quebec has proposed a similar MMP system for the province, a commission in PEI recomended the same system, BC has convened a Citizens Assembly, Ontario now has a Democrati c Renewal Secretariat, and Saskatchewan and New Brunswick are considering changes as well.
