I'm off to catch a plane, but before I go, I had to post this. Bullies from the Canadian Liberal party are strong-arming a parodist who has put up a political site to make fun of the Prime Minister. This (should be) a national embarrassment: Canadian journalists should be covering this story.
I woke up on Wednesday morning to a phone call from a friendly guy named Tim, who informed me that I had one hour to take down the website, PaulMartinTime.ca, or he would set the lawyers loose on our asses (that's not a quote, but it's an accurate summary).

In between his friendly but businesslike remarks, he dropped a few remarks intended to make me nervous. He said, for example, that he "had a little trouble getting through privacy.ca, but they're no longer supporting your cause." If we had in fact been using privacy.ca, that would be pure power-play. It would mean that he had intimidated (legally or otherwise) a company whose function it is to protect the identity of people who use it into breaking its sole mandate. As it turns out, we don't use privacy.ca; the address of Rob Maguire, the person who registered paulmartintime.ca, is publically available, for all with an internet connection to see.

VCs Whining About Too Much Money...
Again

VCs Whining About Too Much Money...
Again
07/19/2004 04:43 AM
Back in January we noted that the top tier VCs were out there complai ning that their lower tiered competitors were raising too much money and harming the overall VC space. It seems those complaints are only getting louder. For the past year or so, many VCs I've spoken to have been pointing out the same thing. Despite the dot com bubble popping, institutional investors are still shoving each other aside to give VCs money. They have a certain amount of money they want to put into risky investments, and they have no other place to put it than VCs. So, every VC firm heading out to raise money is finding themselves deluged by plenty of investors who want to put in way more money than the fund can handle. Thus, these top tier VCs start whining that the lower tiered VCs will end up with that cash, flooding the market. Then, they're afraid that they'll no longer have easy pickings on ripping off the top startups while earning their cushy management and carry fees. What's most amusing, of course, is that for many, many years, these same top VCs tell story after story about how startups should sign on with only top tier VCs because of all the help they give them to make them a success. If that's the case, why should they care if the lower tier VCs have cash? If what they've been saying is true, it shouldn't matter, because the lower tier VCs won't be able to help turn startups into a success like the top tier guys. Having too much money is only a problem for a VC firm in a situation where the VC firm itself has little impact on the success of a firm. Basically, all this is doing is making the VC world a little more competitive, and that should force them to do a better job (though, not to stop whining). As we've pointed out in the past, while bubbles may be bad for investors, they can often be good for consumers, so don't buy the VC hype.

Let the whining begin! 05/14/2004 12:13 PM
Though I suppose it's well past that time. SixApart announced the new licensing scheme for Movable Type 3.0. I'd figured something was coming down the pike reasonably soon--given their setup there wasn't any way they could sustain their development and actually have people eat. And, while the new prices seem more than a touch high, well... hell, it's their code, they can do what they want with it. The part I haven't been looking forward to isn't the cost, but rather the inevitable whining. Boy, has there been whining. Most of it has been "Oh, this software which I have...

More Whining About Stock Option

More Whining About Stock Option
Expensing
09/22/2004 04:20 AM
It's getting ridiculous how much effort is being put into the effort by both sides on the debate over whether or not companies need to expense stock options. This is entirely an accounting question with no direct impact on cash. It shouldn't impact a company's operations in the slightest if they were forced to expense options, but it certainly won't do a bit of good towards cutting down on fraud (the original reason the concept was proposed). The companies that claim this will kill innovation are making a big deal out of nothing. Anyone who will suddenly change how they feel about a company as an investment opportunity because of this is completely clueless and shouldn't be investing anyway. That said, the only thing that putting this law in place would really do is give some more money to accountants to figure out how options should actually be expensed -- and for that reason alone it's probably better if things were left as they are on the issue. However, the companies complaining that politicians aren't paying enough attention to this issue have it wrong. They're paying too much attention to it.

Eisner

Roy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss it has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the ABC Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will continue to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.

2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with the resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.

3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have tried to build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures reflect it.

JoeUser: Whining from the Free Beer Crowd JoeUser has some good comments on those "open source advocates" that always want "something for nothing" i.e. that free software is somehow morally superior to commercial software. I don't think I've ever taken that position. I don't see anything morally superior about Open Source -- to me Open Source is very much about a more open engineering process that leads to better software. Like Open Source or not -- the types of software it produces, while not perfect, tend to be of greater quality -- results may vary, and as with commercial software, Open Source can produce crappy stuff. But when it works the results are outstanding (Apache, Mozilla, SendMail, Linux, BSD, PHP). [_Go_]

Business Must Be Cautious With Firefox: Why ComputerWorld thinks you should not use Firefox.

In the near term, many business users will be better served by keeping Internet Explorer and installing security updates as they're released. If they aren't dependent on Internet Explorer technology, however, some end users could use Firefox for their daily Web surfing while reserving Internet Explorer use for sites that require it.

Needless to say, the Firefox devotees are pissed, and none of the 16 responses to the article that ComputerWorld published agree with it.

Work

Just A Few Reasons Why You Still Need To
Work
04/07/2005 10:29 PM
It seems that every few years, some "thinker" starts to extrapolate out on the trend of automation and comes to the conclusion that we're all going to lose our jobs. Of course, some think this is a good thing. If there's enough wealth to go around, then why not just chill out and sip beverages on the beach or something? Obviously, it's something of a pipe dream, but that doesn't stop the discussion from happening. A few years ago it was Marshall Brain and his worries about robot s stealing your jobs. Last month, a consultant ripped off the same idea and renamed it "off- peopling" to make it sound new. Of course, they're all just different riffs off the same idea that keeps coming up. A decade ago, for example, it was Jeremy Rifkin telling us all that we were coming upon < i>The End of Work. Of course, we're all still working, and some are finally hitting back and giving a number of detai led reasons why human jobs aren't going away even as we automate their jobs away. Basically, all of this automation simply opens up new opportunities for different types of jobs -- often in the surrounding ecosystem related to the automation. All of those machines need to be built and maintained, after all. At the same time, increased automation opens up new opportunities for support and services -- and, that's where plenty of jobs have been heading recently.

More Reasons Not To Upgrade

More Reasons Not To Upgrade 08/12/2004 10:26 PM
One common wisdom in the Macintosh land is to never install updates from Apple immediately. Wait a while, and let all the other beta testers upgrade and report their successs or failture before you do so. Who knows, maybe Apple will even pull the update so that they can work on it somemore before you update?
But now, there is another reason why you shouldn't update so quickly: find out if the latest and greatest Apple patch will disable your beloved hack -- whether it is to play Windows Media files through your AirPort Express, or copy your RealNetwork files to your iPod.
Sometimes, the computer industry can make one sad.

5 reasons to pan the iPod 11/11/2003 03:40 AM
A CNET article lists the five top reasons to avoid the iPod. Though the article isn't completely anti-iPod, it does follow closely on the heels of a CNET poll which was decidedly biased against Apple's digital music device. According the article, battery life, price, a lack of recording, the inability of the iPod to play WMA files and the fact that it is hard-drive based are the 5 reasons to NOT buy one. The article concludes with a list of competitors from Dell, Creative, Rio and...

Reasons To Be Cheerful 12/17/2003 07:19 AM
Reasons To Be Cheerful: Go on, give us one. If a curmudgeonly, pessimistic, reactionary old prison doctor like Theodore Dalyrymple can do it, so can we. It's a great little article, btw, but its title is even better. The late, great, crippled Ian Dury sang about them and comedian Dave Gorman built an Edinburgh Festival show around it. So be a sport and let us have one good reason of your own - preferably to do with something ahead of us or just now coming into its own or still stubbornly with us, despite the pricks and kicks. No nostalgia allowed! [It's the holidays, after all. Cynicism is for the rest of the year. I greedily bag AskMetaFilter, thank you very much.]

Deliberately courting the ire of Apple lovers everywhere, Eliot Van Buskirk of CNET gives five reasons why not to buy an iPod: its battery life is too short, you can't/shouldn't jog with it, it's expensive, you can't use it to make high-quality recordings, and it doesn't work with any of the other online music stores besides iTunes. All true, but it says a lot about the excellence of the iPod's design that it has been able to make people overlook its shortcomings. Read...
