07/28/2004 05:48 AM
A group of pissed-off Spiderman fans have determined to make a third Spiderman movie off their own bat, without permission from Marvel or the studio, rallying to a cry of "In recent years Hollywood Studios have assaulted our comics. Well comic lovers, it's time to fight back." They're soliciting production crew, actors, effects people and cash donations, so they can get the Secret Spiderman Movie out before Hollywood beats them to the punch.

Beer Circles

Beer Circles 09/26/2004 05:36 AM

Drinking on the rails.

« If only all the Helsinki city trams featured a bar, curtains, a loo and inlaid wooden benches like Spårakoff. »

Every big city has some attraction that the locals eschew as a tourist trap and, if I had to think of one for Helsinki, Spårakoff would likely be it. Boston has the duck tours but Spårakoff doesn't feature an annoyingly perky tour guide spewing useless trivia about Helsinki that you won't remember as you whiz by at 50mph while wishing that you had a beer. No, Spårakoff rolls quietly around the city in a loop [~160kb map] while you look out the window and enjoy a beer or two along with the scenery. The tram only runs from May through August which seems wrong since the times you'd want to ride on a cozy tram drinking beer would likely be more during the cold and dark months rather than the warm and sunny months, but unsurprisingly tourists don't flock to Helsinki during the dark times. There's very little mention of the tram on the net in English and so I suppose that it's something the natives want to ride on but only do when they have a visitor to take along as an excuse for being such a tourist. :)

I had always wanted to take a ride on it since first seeing the red tram, but it's not really something you make time for when you live here, ride the regular trams, have seen the sights and don't feel like parting with 7€ for admission and 5€ for a beer just for a 40-60 minute ride around town. A short ferry ride to Tallinn, a few cases of Koff, and back costs only a few euros more. It's a beautiful old tram appointed with a bar, polished wood seats, carpet and velvet curtains which gives the air of being both modern and vintage at the same time. The tables even have built-in cup holders to keep spillage down to a minimum. The tram was originally built in 1959 for Helsinki City Transport, who still operate the tram, and it has been a pub tram serving Koff beer and cider since 1995. The brochure mentions that it has a capacity for 24 people sitting, 6 people standing and, 1 seat in the WC. :) Koff still delivers kegs of beer to local pubs via a wagon pulled by draft horses driven by 2 gentlemen, too, so I think they have a penchant for nostalgia.

The Big Companies That Advertise Through
Spyware
06/22/2004 06:02 AM
For all of the complaints about how software products like Gator and WhenU get installed on computers (usually by having the permission hidden in the very very fine print while installing another application), there hasn't been too much attention given to the companies who advertise via such spyware applications and keep them in business. The Wall Street Journal is now pointing out that plenty of large companies seem to have no problem advertising through spyware. What's interesting is that this list includes Verizon, who claims they haven't received a single complaint. Verizon, of course, also supplies DSL, and if the reactions from plenty of other broadband providers is any indication, they must receive a ton of customer support calls from people trying to get such spyware off their computers. So, it's yet another case of companies trying to walk the fine line of telling their customers one thing publicly while supporting the spyware companies out the backdoor.

heh. Google has this ad for their text-based Adsense system that uses rich-media streaming flash with sound and movies (read: like the annoying ads they created text ads to replace). Also, I wonder if there was an internal Google company contest to find the employee that most resembled cuter-than-cute dimpled Janie Porche from the Apple Switch ads. [via david g]]

Kevin Kelly: Powering Virtuous Circles

Kevin Kelly: Powering Virtuous Circles 12/27/2003 04:02 PM
In the latest edition of Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools ezine, some thoughts on giving:
There's no shortage of opportunities to support important causes. Lot of charities are local and community based. Some are more internationally- and future-oriented such as Amnesty International, EFF, Long Now Fondation, World Vision, the AFCLU, and Oxfam to name just a few. Everyone can add their favorite. But let's say you were interested in a "tool" to leverage the least amount of money into the largest measurable effect over time. For that I'd like to recommend a type of giving that multiplies itself. Over the years, these are the criteria I've adopted for this challenge:

1) The help is aimed at the lowest, those with the least, where small makes a huge difference.
2) The gift expands itself, gaining amplitude with each cycle.
3) The range is global.

Think of it as enabling philanthropy: take a minimum of money and aim it at the precise point where it can do the maximum good, multiplied by many generations. Maximum good is measured simply: when you enable someone to enable someone else. That is a virtuous circle. I've found the follow three do-good organizations to meet these criteria. They fund the neediest in the world. They are highly-evolved programs that produce amazing results. And one tangential result is that when we give to these three, we feel optimistic.

TiVo Begins Its Pop Up Campaign To

TiVo Begins Its Pop Up Campaign To
Advertise During Advertisements
03/28/2005 11:14 PM
As was annou nced last year, TiVo has now launched their program to put pop-up ads in your commercials as you're fast forwarding through them. You can click on the ads to "get more info," but if you're fast forwarding through the commercial, it seems like a pretty clear indication that you're not interested in what's being advertised. The initial reaction seems quite negative, as many users claim that the ads obscure much of the screen, making it difficult for them to see what the commercial is about in the first place (since many still claim they'll go back and watch commercials that look interesting) and to figure out when to stop fast forwarding to continue watching the show at hand.
