Samsung 30-Mile Cordless Phone 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

samsungcordless3_small_1_.jpgIf you're the type who dreads being dragged kicking and screaming into the use of a cell phone, Samsung sells their Long Range Cordless Phone. With an incredible (for landlines) 30-mile range, the set includes a caller ID-capable LCD and is able to communicate with the base-station, acting as an intercom. It includes a car charger and an outdoor antenna with 50 feet of cable that could very well violate my Homeowner's Association's CC&Rs. Either way, if you want to use your landline anywhere in town (mountains and buildings aside) without a cell phone account, this $300 option from Samsung is one to consider.

Update: Keep in mind, this sort of power may be violating FCC regulation.

ccbeauty.jpg imageThe Cordless Collector is a Bluetooth bar code reader that stores up to 250 barcodes at a time as you scan your own media, adding them wireless to the included MacOSX 'Collector' software that looks up the codes on the internet to help you build and categorize detailed lists of things you already own. So while for the less thorough among us won't find much use for it, the Cordless Collector could be a big help to those with massive CD and DVD collections (and who have friends that don't like to return things they've borrowed), small retail businesses, or people that just like to know exactly how many cans of french cut green beans they own at any given time. B00026C9He.01-A1Yexo1Ph1L14S. Sclzzzzzzz I don't think I've ever had a cordless phone I really like. The 2.4 GHz models interfere with my Wi-Fi setup, and 5.8 GHz phones are a scam, if you ask me, because they can't penetrate walls as well as phones that use lower frequencies. For this reason, I always use 900 MHz phones.

But there's a problem that all cordless phones share, no matter what frequency they use: low volume. I'm not hard of hearing, but I often have difficulty understanding a caller. I don't have a low-volume problem with corded phones, especially the old Bell Labs rotary phones, which were designed and tested by the world's greatest acoustic experts.

I went to Fry's on Friday to pick up some blank DVD's and I ended up walking down the phone aisle, just to see what they were selling. One phone immediately stood out, because it was white and had a big red light on it: the Uniden EZI996 900 MHz Cordless Phone. It's designed for the visually or hearing impaired. It cost $40. It has a volume boost switch on the handset, as well as an adjustable volume control. I bought it.

It's the best cordless phone I've ever used. You can crank the volume way up. The sound quality is great. I also like the fact that it's white and has the blinking red light, because it's easy to find when it's ringing. The display is large-type, which is useful whether or not your vision is impaired.

All phones should be so well designed. Link

A cordless telephone that lets you plug into both your standard telephone socket and also your computer's USB port, the on=screen display tells you when your Skype friends are online and lets you call them directly. If you want to call your non-Skype friends, press a button and the phone gives you a standard dial tone. This could work nicely if you need to keep your landline for whatever reason. Available whenever Square7 gets their PayPal links fixed.

Logitech introduces MX 1000 Laser
Cordless Mouse
09/01/2004 03:18 PM
Logitech on Wednesday introduced the MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse. The company bills is as "the world's first laser mouse," since the mouse uses laser illumination and tracking. What's more, it uses "Fast RF" wireless technology to connect to either a Mac or PC. The laser light of the cordless mouse is nearly invisible and very safe, according to the company -- it beams down onto the surface and reflects back up; a sensor in the mouse detects movements and translates that to cursor motion.

Notebook Cordless Mouse Roundup

Notebook Cordless Mouse Roundup
(Verdict: Go Logitech)
04/12/2005 11:31 AM

notebook_cordless_roundup.jpgLIVEdigitally has a nice and comprehensive roundup of three cordless notebook mice. Pitting the Logitech V500 ($70), Belkin Mini ($29) and Kensington Pocket Mouse ($50) against each other, each mouse carries its own strong points, with the Logitech V500 edging out the others just barely. The Logitech features a "4-way soild state scroll panel" in lieu of a wheel, nixing moving parts and making for a more solid device. The scroll panel impressed them considerably, working both for horizontal and vertical scrolling. Even cooler, the wireless receiver fits inside the mouse when not in use. The other mice fared well and tended to cost less, although lacking some of the pizazz of the Logitech. Read LIVEdigitally's review for the full story on all the mices.

Remember when they didn’t have optical sensors and used a heavy rubber-coated ball that got all messed up with lint over time? Well, things are about to get even better, thanks to a new design from Logitech that dumps the scroll wheel in favor of a sensitive slider panel you simply trace your finger across. It…
