nineteen seventy is rollin in sight

nineteen seventy is rollin in sight 05/05/2004 07:54 PM

Speaking of Felix . . . I saw him this morning, and the vet, and all the techs at the hospital all told me how talkative he had been, and how eager he was to come home. He continued to "eat like a pig" they said (he ate almost an entire 5.5 ounce can of food this morning) and he was even eating fish, which he's always hated. There was another cat in the space next to The Bear, and I guess the two of them had been talking to each other since yesterday. I think I may have seen a copy of Escape from AlCATraz -- with feline subtitles, of course -- behind Felix's litter box.

Second Sight

Second Sight 08/23/2004 06:30 AM
Second Sight - PC Surveillance Software
http://www.iquesoft -online.com/pdssight.htm

Second Sight is a full-featured local and remote Windows surveillance application that keeps a complete record of all activities on your computer. Business managers can use Second Sight to monitor employees' activities, and parents can use it to keep track of their children's Internet travels, even from a different location. With Second Sight, you can determine which computer user is making inappropriate or costly use of local and Internet resources. As the amount of Internet content increases daily, so does the potential for abuse. The software works invisibly in the background, totally hidden from the computer's users. The program records the names of all open windows and web pages, and records all keys that were pressed. Second Sight can capture screen images, web cam and video camera stills, save them in its log files in full or compressed format. You can access these logs and images in real-time using any web browser. Optionally, have Second Sight notify you whenever the source PC is online and available for remote access. When reviewing Second Sight's log files, you can see everything that the user saw, and read everything that was typed, as well as perform keyword searches. The program can also be configured to silently e-mail the log files to another computer. This has been added to Privacy Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to Security Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide. New technologies create a constant struggle between our security and our privacy ....

Mobl0gging At First Sight

Mobl0gging At First Sight 05/05/2004 06:41 PM
Well, first people were getting dumpe d by SMS, but what if camera phones can help them find their one true soul mate? Already, there are a number of popular "missed connections" websites for people who saw the love of their life walk by on the street and were too stricken by love to actually say anything. As you might imagine, these sites rarely lead to any sort of actual connection. Still, pic turephoning.com points us to one entrepreneur has decided to take this to the next level. Instead of just saying things like "You were on the crosstown bus wearing a red sweater," you're supposed to snap a picture of your this one-true-love-you've-never-spoken-to with your camera phone and post it to a moblogging site. Then you hope that the person in question visits the site, sees him or herself, isn't creeped out beyond all belief that some weird person is taking secret pictures and posting them to the internet, contacts you, turns out to be normal despite visiting such sites and responding to such creepy come ons from folks who couldn't get up the nerve to just say "hi," and falls in love. Sounds like a real winner.

Ithaca Wi-Fi (and No Engst in Sight) 03/24/2005 11:43 AM
The headline is an in-joke, but there's an explanation: Lightlink, an ISP in Ithaca, New York, offering mostly wireless broadband connections, has installed free hotspots around town in a promotional effort. My friends and colleagues Adam and Tonya Engst live in Ithaca, and I co-wrote The Wireless Networking Starter Kit with Adam (Tonya editing). They're even Lightlink customers. And Tonya was part of the group that decided on allowing Wi-Fi at the Tompkins County Public Library mentioned in the article. It's a small town, but I guess not that small....

First sight of alien planets

First sight of alien planets 03/23/2005 08:36 PM
David Pescovitz: Astronomers used the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope to see planets outside our solar system for the first time ever. Previously, scientists have inferred the existence of more than 100 planets by detecting a gravity-induced wobble or shift in light in the stars that they orbit. Yesterday, the astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Goddard Space Flight Center announced that they directly observed the infrared radiation emitted by two planets 153 and 500 light-years away. (Seen here is a NASA artist's concept.) From the New York Times:
Media Images Ssc2005-09B Small They said directly measuring light from the planets was a major step in the quest to understand what alien planets are made of, because different molecules in the atmosphere absorb infrared light in characteristic ways and allow scientists to compare these alien planets to those in the solar system. Ultimately, astronomers would like to know if Earth, with its ability to evolve and support life, is unique or common in the universe....

Dr. Geoffrey W. Marcy, a planet hunter at the University of California, Berkeley, called the results "the stuff of history books" and added, "With this result, we are closer to understanding our own human roots, chemically, among the stars."

Urban CB - Temporary Walkie Talkie Communities is another great idea from Rajat that I could get behind. It seems like this should already be possible, given the technology is out there. I could see this becoming quite popular in LA, where you are essentially stuck on freeways for hours a day, surrounded by people, but entirely isolated and alone in your car. I could also see an Urban CB idea creating little smart mobs of folks that could point out crashes, cops, and other delays before any other technology.
