Linux on Your XBox

Linux on Your XBox 08/11/2004 04:57 AM

Xbox-Linux - Run Linux on your Xbox!: I wait anxiously for the Xbox supercomputer cluster to put the G5 cluster to shame.

An Xbox with Linux can be: a full desktop computer with mouse and keyboard, a web/email box connected to TV, a server or router, a node in a cluster.

You can either dual-boot or use Linux only; in the latter case, you can replace both IDE devices. And yes, you can connect the Xbox to a VGA monitor.

The name "Xbox" is short for the development name of the product: "DirectX Box," named for Microsoft 's graphics API. Since the Xbox uses DirectX heavily, it's apparently not hard to emulate an Xbox on a PC.

Dubbed CHAOS, the software is able to remotely boot a computer and run it on Linux without affecting the local hard disk. With enough PCs, this has the potential of creating a distributed supercomputer. The project was driven by one challenge: the lack of time, said Sydney-based Pure Hacking, which specializes…

Crackers Are Faster Than You

Crackers Are Faster Than You 08/18/2004 02:49 PM

Here's a scary statistic that I hadn't considered before: SANS keeps a graph of the amount of time you can have an unprotected PC on the Internet before you get some kind of exploit probe. Since last year, this time has gone from 40-60 minutes down to around 20-30 minutes, which is less time than you usually need to download your service packs and patches for a new install.

The average time between probes will vary widely from network to network. Some of our submitters subscribe to ISPs which block ports commonly used by worms. As a result, these submitters report a much longer 'survival time'. On the other hand, University Networks and users of high speed internet services are frequently targeted with additional scans from malware like bots. If you are connected to such a network, your 'survival time' will be much smaller.

SANS includes a link to a PDF entitled 'Windows XP: Surviving the First Day'. As always, a $60 broadband router/firewall box will deal with most of these problems for you.

Microsoft Game Studios has announced a June 28 release date for its Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack. The new expansion pack contains nine multiplayer maps and two videos including an animated side-story and a mini-documentary. Launched on November 9 with pre-orders exceeding 1.5 million, Halo 2 is the sequel to the highly successful Halo: Combat Evolved for Microsoft's Xbox console. Halo 2 has sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide, surpassing sales of 2001's Halo which was previously the top-selling Microsoft Xbox game. Xbox Live subscribers will have the opportunity to view four maps from the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack in late April, and on June 28, the pack will be available in both retail outlets and via Xbox Live for $19.99.

Media Center Extender for Xbox Reviewed

Media Center Extender for Xbox Reviewed 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

media_center_exrev.jpg imagePaul Thurrott has a review up of the Xbox Media Center Extender kit—the package that lets you stream Media Center recorded content to remote TVs via your Xbox—and it's pretty much a must-read for anyone considering using the (fairly) recently-released devices. While it has a lot to offer to Media Center PC owners, a few glaring oversights, like a remote thats incompatible with other Media Center devices (and vice-versa) and the decision by Microsoft to force users to keep the software DVD in the Xbox at all times instead of loading it onto the hard drive keep it from being a clear winner. His short take is that it's good for those already hitched to Microsoft's wagon, but it isn't going to win any new fans.

The clock is a fun thing to have on your desktop if you're trying to brush up on your binary, and really, who isn't? Even though it's just a clock, there is still some nice customization available here. You can get rid of the window border, change the size, have it always stay on top, and even change the display to something like hex or Roman numerals. However, it would be nice if you could customize the color and font of the clock a little more. If you want to customize the program yourself, download the source code from the Web site. For your information, the help file is also a separate download on the site.
