Better Looking Robots
Better Looking Robots
02/10/2004 03:00 AMAs robot technology continues to improve, it's becoming possible to
give
our robots much more interesting appearances. For some designers, like
David Hanson this
means exploring the uncanny
valley where robots become androids that look almost (but not quite)
human. For others designers, like White Box Robotics, this
means the chance to make robots that look as good as any we've seen in
Star Wars. David Hanson is making news again this week in the Deleware
News Journal and Newsday.com.
The White Box Robotics 912 HMV, meanwhile, was covered today by an ABC
News SCI/Tech article.

We dig robotic rovers,
so robotic rovers able to traverse sub-zero Antarctic ice sheets while
receiving power from the sun and wind are always enough to catch our
eye. Carnegie Mellon tells us that their Nomad rover (which earlier
trekked 135 miles through Chile's Atacama Desert and across
Antarctica) is being prepped to search for signs of living
microorganisms on the surface of the ice. Outfitted with a wind
turbine for the first time, the Nomad made it 6 miles through the snow
and ice of the frozen Lake Mascoma while researchers studied the
possibility of powering it both with solar and wind energy. Further
development will include an ice coring and sampling device as well as
a fluorescence spectrometer. (Thanks, James!)

Tech Research News article describes the efforts of scientists to
use automated animal movement analysis to improve robot interaction.
As
part of the BioTracking
project, Georgia Tech researchers at the BORG Lab are developing
several techniques for automatically tracking and modeling the
movements
of social insects such as ants
and bees. By studying the sequence of motions of the insects, the
researchers hope to reverse engineer the algorithms that drive them
and
implement those algorithms in software on simulators and actual
robots. If you're interested in learning more about their plans, you
may
want to attend the International Workshop on the
Mathematics and Algorithms of Social Insects Dec 15-17 at the

Queen baddie using a semi-robotic lifting machine? Well, it looks like
that technology is getting closer to real-world applications. Inventor
Steven Jacobsen is s
howing off a prototype of his device, and is working with robotics
gurus Sarcos to make it a
production reality.
Strap it on, go for a walk on the treadmill or up and down stairs
while carrying a 90-kilogram load on your back, and it feels as if
youre carrying nothing, says Jacobsen. You can even balance on one
foot with a person on your back and barely feel any more fatigued than
if you were standing by yourself, he adds. The exoskeleton adds
strength because it stays in parallel with the users legs and pushes
on the ground.
Military uses seem to be first in line for this device, but I can
think of lots of other uses for it in industry, construction, even in
nursing homes — anywhere lifting and lifting-related injuries
are involved. I don't think they'll have one ready for my backyard
landscaping project though.

agricultural engineer Tony Grift

Dances with Robots
Dances with Robots
02/10/2004 03:00 AMMIT student Sommer Gentry
and her husband Dorry Segev
have developed a highly evolved system of robot communication and
control via haptic signaling. The system is better known as "Swing
Dancing". They started with two human swing dancers. From there they
progressed to "Jedi Swing Dancing" in which two blindfolding humans
dance (thus proving that haptic communication alone is sufficient for
human-to-human dancing). Now they've progress to a human-robot dance
in
which the human communicates with a robot arm haptically. The robot or
the human can lead. Read more in the MIT press
release. Or for the full story see Sommer's research
papers on Haptic-only lead and follow dancing and related subjects.

He also comments on the continuing decline in the number of engineers
and reminisces about beating his school headmaster at chess. For more

My NYT Mag piece on robots
My NYT Mag piece on robots
11/15/2003 02:18 PMI wrote a piece on home robotics for the New York Times Magazine as
part of a
section on Home Automation with contributions from James
Gleick, Paul Boutin, Clive Thompson and others; it shipped today:
Home robots were the jet-pack future's sweetest lie: personal
assistants working tirelessly and without complaint -- companions,
servants and pets. They would be nimble and able, and computers would
be blinking omniscient behemoths.
How wrong they were. Just as millions of users defied the first
engineers' narrow visions of what a home computer could be, and
figured out how to make PC's bend to their will, the cheapness and
flexibility of commodity computer components are now enabling a new
hobbyist revolution in home robotics. C.P.U.'s -- the brains of a PC
-- are cheap like borscht, and the sensors that allow computers to
see, hear, feel and smell have likewise plummeted in cost. (Pinhead
digital cameras, for example, are so cheap these days that it's hard
to find a pocket-size gizmo that doesn't have one built in.) All it
takes to turn these pieces into a robot is packaging the brains and
the senses atop a mobile platform and stirring in some clever code.

Swarming robots
Swarming robots
11/14/2003 01:46 PMiRobot, the company behind the Roomba, doesn't just make robotic
vacuum cleaners. They're also building robots that could group
together in swarms and be used to clear landmines or rescue earthquake
victims:The point of the Swarm project is to be able to program lots
of robots to communicate with each other using proprietary Behavior
Language software. And we're not talking about 10 or even 100 bots,
but 10,000 or more. The name "Swarm" comes from the robots' ability to
work like insects... The robots communicate using an infrared light
signal that begins with a chosen leader (which has an antenna on its
head) and then spreads to the rest. So essentially, they "talk" to
each other. When this happens, the lights begin flashing. Each light
has an accompanying sound. The sounds tell the robots how far away
they are from each other.Read...
Will Robots Ever Become Conscious?
Will Robots Ever Become Conscious?
11/12/2003 01:31 PMThe New York Times has an aricle that asks,
Can Robots Become Conscious? Well, I don't know, and neither do
they, and neither does just
about anyone else. It seems that before we can know whether robots
can attain consciousness, we
first have to figure out just what consciousness is. Then, and only
then can we know if a robot
has attained it. Some, like
Hans Morevec, think humans are just a grand machine and if so we can
someday build one.
But others think humans and their consciousness could be more like
something spiritual or a
quantum effect
or an electromagnetic
field? And, if so, we have to figure out what that more is if we
plan to
simulate it. Perhaps robots already are conscious, just not at a
level of consciousness that we consider truly conscious? Or perhaps,
if we can just pass the
Turing test, then that would be good enough? And, well,
if we make a sentient being, what then?
