FCC Decision on Ground-to-Air for Data
FCC Decision on Ground-to-Air for Data
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Misreporting abounded today about the FCC's air-to-ground wireless
spectrum decision: What really was decided in order FCC 04-287? That 4
MHz in the 800 MHz band designated for commercial air-to-ground use
will be auctioned. More on how the auction will be decided in a
moment. Reports were all over the board in describing the decision,
however, partly because of the way in which the press release was
written. If you don't know spectrum, as many business reporters still
do not, then you can easily misunderstand what was covered. Many
articles stated that the decision would allow Wi-Fi on board planes.
But that decision was made years ago, and is why Connexion by Boeing
is allowed to operate using Wi-Fi for its satellite-to-air service.
For instance, this Reuters story incorrectly states, The U.S. Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) forbids the cabin use of devices that
intentionally emit radio waves during flight -- like wireless phones
and computers that can communicate with each other. The trade press
tended to handle this better. For instance, Stephen Lawson from IDG
News Service, a man who has filed hundreds of stories that I've read,
got his facts dead right. Mike Masnick also figured out what was
decided, but even he errs in reading the order to indicate only data
services are at stake. The two licenses the FCC will grant at auction
cover voice, data, broadband Internet, etc., although not ancillary
services which isn't defined, but which means using the frequencies
for purposes other than air-to-ground, like filling in empty spaces in
ground cellular coverage. I spoke briefly to Connexion by Boeing's
Sherry Nebel today to help clarify what was decided. Stating
Connexion's general position, she said, "The FCC did a really thorough
job of listening to all of the interested parties and addressing a
complex situation. We are pleased that the license will be limited to
the intended air-to-ground use and ancillary use will not be allowed.
And we now look forward to reviewing the commission's ruling in
detail." There's that ancillary use again--we'll certainly hear more
about it in the future. Nebel confirmed that Connexion will evaluate
all of its options, now that air-to-ground is on the table. Reports
have indicated that Connexion pays hundreds of millions of dollars a
year in fees to lease the network of satellite transponders necessary
to provide the extensive coverage needed for over-water routes. Adding
air-to-ground communications...

But
scientists and
fans at NASAWatch say consolidation into a single NASA portal -
which is more suited as collection press releases rather than in-depth

Extending Connexion to the Ground
04/09/2004 03:57 PMConnexion by Boeing and Singapore's StarHub connect network billing:
It's been a dream of mine since I first heard about Connexion that the
business traveler of tomorrow checks their email at home over Wi-Fi
(using DSL backhaul), handles work in the back of the cab to the
airport by 2.5G/3G, logs into the airport Wi-Fi network, and hops on
the plane to use in-flight Wi-Fi--all with a single account. StarHub
and Connexion's memo of understanding is the first step in seamless
connectivity. The kinds of business travelers who routinely fly
distances that will be served by Connexion are the kind who want (and
possibly need) continuous connectivity to keep their role in the
business information flow active. This doesn't mean you want to sit
next to them, on the plane, of course, especially once in-flight
cellular becomes a reality....

Scam literary agent run to ground
11/19/2003 02:46 AMA grifter who has made it her practice to rip off naive writers with a
phony literary agency has been snagged, after a bewlidering array of
international scores:
In a burst of activity, Melanie Mills--long known to be a scam
literary agent--has promoted a nonexistent writers' conference in
South Carolina, which she then cancelled without sending anyone their
promised refunds on memberships they'd bought; faked her own death,
masquerading as her own assistant and possibly as her own daughter as
well; shut down her operation in North Myrtle Beach SC, and decamped
to Canada; while operating under the name "Elizabeth von Hullessem",
fraudulently promoted and sold memberships in a nonexistent literary
conference in Banff (trading on the reputation of the prestigious
Banff-Calgary Wordfest), plus an equally nonexistent charity concert
in Banff to benefit autism; and vanished from Banff with tens of
thousands of dollars in convention fees.
LinkRoaming Solutions Fight for Ground
Roaming Solutions Fight for Ground
05/11/2004 02:58 PMRoaming is crucial for many service providers that are hoping to offer
their customers access to the greatest number of hotspots. But while
service providers know that roaming is important, they're faced with a
slew of options, each with varying services, for how to make it work.
We covered RoamPoint's recent launch, comparing its offering with the
iPass roaming offering. Wi-Fi Networking News today spoke with the
marketing director from WeRoam for a perspective on that company's
mission. WeRoam handles authentication, billing, settlement, and
aggregation of hotspots for GSM operators around the globe. The
company is a sister company of Comfone, the organization that provides
clearing, billing, and authentication for over 200 GSM operators'
roaming services. WeRoam is building on those capabilities and
existing relationships to offer hotspot services to GSM operators.
WeRoam says it has aggregated 8,000 hotspots worldwide, which includes
Fatport, Surf and Sip, and Concourse in North America. WeRoam's GSM
operator customers can offer those hotspots to their customers,
relying on WeRoam to support authentication and bill settlement.
WeRoam primarily touts its SIM-card authentication method but will
support password authentication, smart cards, interactive voice
response methods, and other authentication methods. End users
typically have a combined UMTS, GPRS, and Wi-Fi PC card that has a SIM
slot but they can use a SIM card dongle instead. When they arrive in
range of a hotspot, the WeRoam client software on their PC checks that
the hotspot is part of the WeRoam network. If it is, the SIM card in
the PC card authenticates the user against WeRoam servers in
Switzerland. Then WeRoam aggregates billing information and settlement
data and acts as a broker. The process uses the same secure networks
used by GSM operators to enable their cellular voice customers to roam
so it's easy for operators to sign up for the service, said Michael
Gebert, director of marketing for WeRoam. WeRoam primarily focuses on
Europe, where Orange Switzerland is a customer, but has some customers
in Africa and South America. The U.S. isn't a large market for WeRoam
because cell phone users here aren't as comfortable using SIM cards as
customers in other parts of the world. But WeRoam has talked to
operators such as AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile, which could use
other authentication methods instead of SIM, Gebert said. WeRoam
recently added Australia's Skynet Global, a hotspot operator, to its
network. WeRoam doesn't consider Roampoint a...
