Microsoft is considering major changes to its enterprise volume licensing program. The changes would allow large service providers and systems integrators and to license software on behalf of their own largest customers. Currently, enterprise customers need to negotiate volume agreements directly with Microsoft. This is the case even when the software is hosted and managed by a third party.

Iranian Election Text Messages Could
Backfire As Politicians Freak Out

Iranian Election Text Messages Could
Backfire As Politicians Freak Out
06/22/2005 02:17 AM
There have been plenty of stories about how mobile text messaging has played a role in recent elections in places like South Korea and the Philippines, among other places. So it's not really surprising to find out that text messaging has been very popular in Iran as well, which has a tremendously large younger generation. However, unlike in those other places, it appears that the politicians in question haven't quite learned how to adapt to the changing technology. Since most of the effort is against a particularly candidate, he's now now threatening revenge against anyone who sent SMS messages that were negative towards him: "I have the address and phone numbers of those who have slandered me (in the text messages)." The local judiciary is also making it clear that such messages are illegal and they'll prosecute those involved. Imagine if you had a similar situation in the US during elections where mud-slinging is encouraged? Given Iran's history of imprisoning bloggers and others who they dislike, this is, obviously, a serious matter -- but it's just a reminder that the things that we take for granted about open communications thanks to new technologies aren't quite so embraced in other parts of the world.

Care to answer a question for a city slicker? Why is it that about 10% of the "free range" eggs we buy have blood spots on their yolk? I thought a blood spot indicates that the egg is fertile. Are they letting the chickens run with roosters? Or is this a case of parth-henhouse-ogenesis?...

Ms. Jardin, Though you might be intereested in this tidbit. I got a phone call from International Communications Research (ICR) for a survey yesterday. Buried among the questions about credit counseling services, political affiliation, and consumption of coffee, tobacco, and fast food products, I got this series of questions.

"Do you have an Internet connection? Have you ever visited the website subservientchicken.com? Would you visit it again?"

These were followed up by questions about the BK Tendercrisp Sandwich and their low-carb menu. Looks like they're looking to evaluate the potency of their stealth marketing campaign.

Don't call him chicken

Don't call him chicken 07/10/2004 02:43 PM
Sunjit Kumar of Suva, Fiji, was raised by chickens. As a young boy, his grandfather locked him in a chicken coop where he lived for several years. After Kumar escaped, he was taken to an old age home where the baffled staff confined him for twenty years. Now though, Elizabeth Clayton, president of a Rotary Club in Fiji's capital city, has, er, taken Kumar under her wing.
"Sujit would mostly hop around like a chicken, peck at his food, perch like a chicken and make noises like a chicken," she said. "He would prefer to roost on the floor to go to sleep rather than sleep in a bed."
Kumar currently resides in a former factory while undergoing therapy. Video available here. More of the story here.

Dixie Chicks Pulled from Air After Bashing Bush Dude, these Texas people didn't find criticism of the president unpatriotic when Bill Clinton was president. They thought it was a sacred duty...Apparently country stations in Texas and elsewhere are pulling Dixie Chicks albums because their lead singer, while on an overseas tour, criticized Bush, saying she was ashamed to be from the state as him. People who want to criticize the critics of the critical comments are supporting the Chicks by buying their albums and requesting their songs. I never thought I'd buy a Dixie Chicks album, but that's what I'm going to do tonight, and I'm paying full price!

O'Neil the Chicken

O'Neil the Chicken 01/16/2004 01:02 PM

Too bad O'Neil is backtracking on his accounts of the Bush administration.  His words matched my expectation of Bush perfectly.  When Bush got elected, I expected him to look for excuses to attack Iraq.  And I would have been surprised if he paid attention to anything other than the Bible and the picture of Saddam Hussein after he got to the White House.  Baloonfoot indeed.

I think O'Neil spoke the truth and now he is acting like a chicken.  The sad thing is that I am not surprised.  Only thing missing is Osama bin Laden announcing that he attacked America because he learned of a secret plot by Bush to invade and occupy Iraq.  Sheesh.  I'll bet Arnold the Terminator would make a much better President than Bush.

BTW, check out the 30 second ads at Bush in 30 Seconds site even if you are pro-Bush.  Ads oversimplify as usual but they are hillarious and very well done.  I am impressed.

Stavros the wonder chicken hits the big
time
04/09/2004 04:01 PM
One of my favorite writers on the web, who I once lauded as the literary decendant of Hunter S. Thompson, just announced that he has been approached to have some of his essays published in a book! Every writer's dream comes true for him. It is a well deserved honor. It's nice to know that quality of writing stands on its own, even when disguised by a ridiculous pen name (Stavros the Wonderchicken), and when the writer is not part of any meat space clique or echo chamber. He is the second of my favorite writers to get published in print because of the quality of his writing on the web. The first was Real Live Preacher, who writes with about as different a voice from Stavros the Wonderchicken as one could image, although the sensibilites aren't that far apart. Here is hoping that Robert K Brown of Leukemia Survior will be next, then one near and dear to me. Now quickly, go read some of Stavros' essays on Empty Bottle before he starts charging you for reading :-)....

HOWTO build a Bluetooth "sniper rifle"

HOWTO build a Bluetooth "sniper rifle" 03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Cory Doctorow: One of the security assumptions in Bluetooth is that attackers need to be quite close-by if they want to gain access to your phone or other device. Here's simple instructions for building a handsome, effective Bluetooth "sniper rifle" whose high-gain antenna will give you access to devices from miles away.
After a few seconds, John pointed the gun at the Library Tower / US Bank Building, which is the tallest building in Los Angeles. The building was .75 miles (a little over 1 km) from our position.

As more Bluetooth devices started appearing, John said, "This building is full of Bluetooth! Look we got some Blackberries!" He also explained that, with multiple guns, it would be possible to track a single Bluetooth device as the person walked around. In less than a few minutes, twenty devices were detected—all at distances over a half mile away! We decided to quickly conclude the scan, given police activity in the area earlier in the day from a bomb scare.

id gun This is probably phony, but it seems like something that might actually be used: The ID SNIPER rifle implants "a GPS-microchip in the body of a human being, using a high powered sniper rifle as the long distance injector. The microchip will enter the body and stay there, causing no internal damage, and only a very small amount of physical pain to the target. It will feel like a mosquito-bite lasting a fraction of a second. At the same time a digital camcorder with a zoom-lense fitted within the scope will take a high-resolution picture of the target. This picture will be stored on a memory card for later image-analysis." L ink (Thanks, Thorzdad!)

Rifle

xm109_bors.jpg image

Barrett's prototype XM109 packs no-fuss, some-muss light armor penetration into a convenient point-and-shoot form factor that makes lofting 25mm sniper rounds downrange a relative walk in the park for today's workaday infantryman. Going into testing this month, the XM109 uses the computerized sighting-system "BORS" (Barrett Optical Ranging Sighting System) to automatically compensates for changes in air pressure, temperature, and the angle of the weapon towards the target, "taking all the sweat-math work out of first-round shots." Dial in the distance and take your shot - that armored vehicle should go down in the first round.

The XM109 can hold up to five of the 25mm rounds - derived from the dual-purpose (metal and meat) rounds used in the AH-64 Apache helicopter - and can penetrate up to 50 millimeters of armored plating, such as the stuff that protects many of aging SCUD missile launchers.

If given the green light by the armed forces, expect future production versions to incorporate a range-finder, night-vision capability, and sound suppression. (Thanks, Mikegre, you punk.)
