Counter Design has introduced the Showcase 4G, a hard shell designed for Apple's fourth-generation iPods, which feature the same click wheel found on the iPod mini. The Showcase 4G offers shock-absorbing rubber on the inside and a hard shell on the outside, with clear plastic protecting the screen. Openings allow access to the click wheel, buttons and ports and a detachable clip enables you to secure your iPod to your belt. Contour expects to ship the Showcase 4G during the first week of September for US$32.99. Available colors are black and white. The company's Web site was not yet updated as MacCentral posted this article.

The Dunhill cigarette company has made a cigarette-case-style case for the iPod, which, in classinc Dunhill hyperbole, they describe as "ergonomic and luxurious." One thing I've learned since moving to the UK: anytime something is described as "luxurious" (i.e. "Luxury hot cocoa") it is anything but. Nevertheless, the Dunhill cases look pretty rad. The thought process that went into developing this product must've really been something. A true creative genius at work. I wonder if he'd mind if I borrowed his idea and marketed it myself... I smell an opportunity!

The god damned hipsters have struck again -- and this time, it's portable. The Retropod is a, uhm, retrofitting of older Sony "Sports Walkmans" that is probably the very least functional case for iPods I've ever seen. All you get is a headphone out, and you have to open up the case to get to the controls. Even the inline remote won't work, because of the way the headphone extender works. But hey, their models are cute and that goes a long way, even if I can smell the reek of Pabst right through the JPEG.

Now if the only option they offered were the $100 version, I'd have to throw them back out on the curb where they mate and sleep, but since they also have a $20 DIY version (Walkman not included), we'll let it slide for now.

This is especially valuable because it's easier to draw on paper, with a pencil or a pen, than it is to sketch on screen, if only because you can see an entire piece of paper without zooming or panning. And it can be easier to add colors in Photoshop than it is to hassle with conventional paints or assemble fussy mechanicals. I'll show you how to apply color to scanned line art in Photoshop. Throughout this process, you won't harm a single stroke in the original drawing. It really is the best of all worlds.

Tunewear announced on Friday its latest product for iPod: Tune max, a black leather case with Lithium Ion battery cells that provide up to 16 hours of additional power, depending on usage conditions. It features an on/off switch that allows you to dictate when you want it to supply power to your iPod, four LED lights that indicate how much juice it has left and a belt clip. In addition, Tunemax offers a USB port for syncing an iPod with your Mac, and an included mini-round-pin-to-FireWire cable can charge Tunemax from the computer's FireWire port. It's compatible with all iPods, although a sleeve such as Tunewear's Icewear is required to make an iPod mini fit snugly in Tunemax. Pricing was not announced, although Tunewear will display Tunemax at nest week's Apple Expo 2004 in Paris.

The new cover is made of high-density transparent silicone similar in composition to the material used to make diving masks. Damn those punks at MobilePC Magazine for coping one of my most brilliant, as yet unmentioned and only halfway considered ideas. They're having a Mobile PC Design Showcase, uhm, thing. It's not a contest, exactly, because their just giving away an honorarium (like an aquarium but for honor) to those who submit 3D concepts that they really like, but the upshot is that they'll include your design in their magazine. It's by design (oh ho) limited to those who can jockey a 3D modeling program, but if you've been wanting to have your Best Concept Ever showcased somewhere, here's a pretty good chance.
