Is Novell-SuSE deal a brilliant Big Blue
power play?
11/07/2003 03:10 AM
Perhaps the most interesting take on the Novell-SuSE deal is the above link. What has been missed by other commentators is that this is a tri-partite agreement with IBM. David Berlind clarifies a lot of things, even if it is still not the full picture.

Red Hat is also not standing still, abandoning its hobbyist roots to sell only to Enterprises. As Bruce Perens says, "The open source community is supposed to produce Fedora so Red Hat can put a stamp on it and charge lots of money for it."

Does anyone have any recommendations for free Linux distros? Ease of installation and use are more important to me than power (hey, the first computer i ever bought was a Mac.)

With the imminent demise of the product known as Red Hat Linux, many people are asking, "Where do I go next?" For IT decision-makers, the question couldn't come at a worse time. Just as Microsoft is dropping support for their most popular version of Windows, prodding budget-conscious managers to consider Linux on the organization desktop, the best-known Linux distribution is suddenly no longer a part of the solution set at the retail level. As a community college instructor preparing both users and administrators to use Linux in the workplace, the question of "what now?" has been on my mind as well. What follows is a head-to-head comparison of the free version of the world's second most popular Linux distribution - SuSE 9.0 - and the Red Hat-backed community Linux distribution Fedora Core 1.

Unfortunately, this offer is only for those with an in-force maintenance or upgrade protection agreement with Novell - and not all of those qualify.

Review: SuSE Linux 9 11/13/2003 04:09 AM
SuSE Linux 9, the latest release from Nuremberg, Germany-based SuSE Linux, was released at the end of last month. I put SuSE Linux Professional through its paces, and found it to be the most user-friendly Linux distribution on the market. It's not a "must" update for users of previous versions, but it does have some nice perks.

Thanks utomo for this submission.

Like we ever get bored with Windows. Right? Well for those of you who do, or have the time and patience to dable in the world of the Linux Desktop, maybe you'll want to look at this well written and informative review by Adam Doxtater over at Mad Penguin dot org.
Heres a snip from the review
SUSE has always been one of the top distributions for desktop use, but it's never been on top in terms of performance. Most commercial desktop distributions suffer from the same problem, but I'd have to say SUSE has always been at the bottom of the list in terms of raw speed and desktop performance. Even Mandrake and Fedora seem faster. The reason I'm mention this isn't to knock them on performance yet again, but to say that the feel of this desktop is much more responsive than any of their past efforts. Whether this is all in my head or completely justified remains to be seen, but I'm sure other reviewers will be commenting on this very same topic. I originally thought this might be due to the enhancements made in the the recent KDE 3.4 release, but was forced to reevaluate once I saw the Gnome desktop in action. The performance of SUSE 9.3 is actually pretty good. Not as fast as the likes of Slackware or Gentoo but beggars can't be choosers as they say. To have this many apps at my fingertips plus speed... that's just nice. Follow the link for the full review.
View: First Look at Suse Linux 9.3

Many of you have expressed both to me and in public forums the desire to get your hands on SuSE Linux in anticipation of the release of Open Enterprise Server later this year. SuSE Enterprise Server 8 and Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 will form the basis of that release (or, at least, newer versions of those two products will).

“Last week at LinuxWorld in San Francisco, Novell Inc. released the latest version of its enterprise Linux product, SUSE Enterprise Linux 9, which now includes the 2.6 Linux kernel. The benefits of the 2.6 kernel include performance increases, better scalability, management and significant security enhancements. This makes SUSE Enterprise Linux 9 more suitable for the data centre compared with its previous SUSE Enterprise Linux 8, which was based on the 2.4 kernel, said Ross Chevalier,…

In anticipation of Tivo's presenting ads while we fast forward, I'm looking into building (or buying?) a MythTV, an open source project that turns a linux box into a Tivo++. We love Tivo, but MythTV looks much better. (We're also going to try to buy our next TV before the Broadcast Flag goes into effect in July 1, 2005.) I find myself amazingly confused, however. For example, the EFF says that PC TV tuners will record HDTV off of over-the-air broadcasts but not off of cable boxes. That sounds crazy...crazy like the FCC. (Tivo also doesn't record HDTV, except through...

EFF Fights Broadcast Flag With ...
MythTV?
07/02/2004 08:20 AM

teevee.jpg imageThe EFF has an interesting, if somewhat milquetoast call out to programmers and other geeks to help develop the MythTV project, specifically to make it easier to use by the average consumer. Their fear is that the FCC's broadcast flag (a DRM system that will lock down your ability, unless permitted by broadcasters, to exercise your fair use rights, like copying or timeshifting, on HDTV streams) will pass into law as scheduled about a year from now. There is a loophole, currently, that allows unrestricted HDTV devices to be sold and resold, even after the broadcast flag goes into effect.

The idea is, I think, to try to get as many unrestricted HDTV tuners and PVRs into the hands of people as possible, not only to free themselves from future restriction, but to raise awareness that the government, in the pocket of Hollywood, has already made plans to put the squeeze on your rights.
