Singapore's ECS Everex CE PC

07/22/2004 09:20 AM
Cut-rate computer
parts vendor ECS (known in the build-your-own PC world as makers of
decent, if spartan motherboards and the like) has unveiled a new
all-in-one PC to the Singapore market, branded as the Everex CE PC.
It's not built by ECS (if that makes you feel any better about its
build quality), but instead manufactured by FIC and is (reportedly)
the first Singapore-released PC to run Windows XP Media Center Edition
2004 (hard to believe, but it's possible, I suppose). The 17-inch
integrated PC is priced at around $3,700, which is ridiculous. It is
sort of nice looking, though.

Update: The US price will actually be around US$2,150. That's
not nearly as ridiculous (if still spendy).

O'Reilly Emerging

The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain
behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people
off, etc.
This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids
are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase
off your best users, too.
Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating
arises out of real contexts.
Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster
is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they
never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic,
because ex-lovers are strong ties!).

Viagra and Helicopter Gunships
Viagra and Helicopter Gunships
05/02/2004 07:36 PMThe most powerful tools for conservationists in the Galapagos turn
out to be Viagra and helicopter gunships. Introduced goats
consume all of the vegetation that formerly fed the giant
tortoises. Efforts at eradication were unsuccessful until the
authorities brought dogs over from Switzerland to herd the goats into
headlands whereupon they were shot from helicopters. Island
after island is being declared free of goats and the tortoises are
coming back.
Sea cucumbers are highly sought after in traditional Chinese
medicine because they supposedly help us older guys, uh,
"perform". With Viagra as close as one's inbox, however, perhaps
the illegal harvesting of these animals will stop.

"Now members. Let

Legislature, by the unfortunately named Gene Seaman. Practice What You

stop the proposed Anti-Gay-Marriage Amendment. (embedded WMP)
Practice What You Preach believes that the institution of marriage
is under assault in Texas from the twin epidemics of divorce and
domestic violence. We are not a gay-rights group. We are mainstream,
straight Texans who want the legislative leadership to stop making
cheap political points by ignoring real problems. Grok Description matches for Singapore's oldest Viagra user is 99 (Reuters)
