Slashdot is citing a good article that looks at popularity of
programming languages in terms of the number of jobs advertising for
them. The number 1 is Java with 2,739 jobs on Monster. PHP, which
isn't even on the list, has 189 jobs when I do the query myself. That
puts PHP at about 1/2 the popularity of Ada. Oh dear god. [_Go_]
On Dice there are just 30 PHP jobs which puts PHP behind Ada, Fortran,
Scheme, Python and Smalltalk.
And on HotJobs it is impossible to tell how many jobs they have since
they are indexing the file extensions of URLs with PHP as searchable
text. DOH ! (Try looking at the Entry Level Construction - Training
jobs and you'll see that the only citation of PHP is in the url to
apply).
The FuzzyGroup offers search engine consulting services to avoid this
kind of foolishness. We have over 15 years of combined experience in
implementing search engine technology and avoiding silliness like
this.
So does this mean to increase my marketability I need to toss my PHP
books out the door and hunker down with books on Fortran or Ada?
Yikes. I think I'd rather dig ditches.

Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular
09/21/2004 12:42 PMWi-Fi service on UK trains is seeing solid growth in usage: Use of the
service is growing 77 percent week over week, but that figure is a bit
misleading because the number of trains offering Wi-Fi is also
increasing. However, users are also spending an increasing amount of
time on the network and there seems to be an indication that
passengers are deciding to buy first class tickets because the Wi-Fi
access there is free. In other commuter Wi-Fi news, Sydney, Australia
is considering offering Wi-Fi on Sydney ferries....

conflicts Windows XP Service Pack 2 created still have a lot
of companies spooked:
AssetMetrix surveyed
136,120 PCs between January 5 and March 10. It found that 37.6 percent
of those PCs ran Windows XP. The operating system is more widely
adopted among companies with fewer than 500 PCs, where slightly more
than half of the PCs run Windows XP, according to the study. Also,
smaller organizations show the highest acceptance of SP2, it says.
Of the 251 companies surveyed, 44 had fewer than 10 PCs running
Windows XP. Eighty-four, or 40.7 percent, of the remaining companies
had not installed SP2 from their XP machines, while 16 companies, or
7.7 percent, had updated their XP-based PCs, according to the
AssetMetrix study.

the most desirable e-mail addresses.

Calling The Help Desk Is Popular
07/29/2004 01:23 PM
How often do you call the corporate IT help desk? According to a new
study from Siemens Business Services (they want your outsourced IT
support business, so there's a bit of a bias) employees spend a ridiculous amount
of time asking for help each week -- and it's not always for
work-related technology problems. Over one-quarter of users
apparently called their corporate IT help desk to get help with
personal technology problems. Meanwhile, five percent of white collar
workers claim to spend five hours a week chatting with tech
support, and 36% say they spend about 30 minutes a week with tech
support. Seems like an awful lot of problems to fix, though, you have
to wonder how much of that time tech support is spending trying to fix
people's personal tech problems.

Over in the UK, it appears that scanda
ls are more popular than porn. Lycos has released stats on the
most popular searches in 2003, and that times are changing. Porn is
no longer the most searched topic online, as people digging up
celebrity gossip has surpassed it. Of course, I wonder how many of
those people are actually looking for naked celebrities as well.
