Mobile Users Top 1.5 Billion

"As of the first week of June 2004, the mobile service industry broke the 1.5 billion subscriber mark worldwide. Research firm EMC also predicts that the industry will pass the 2 billion mark as early as 2006, far earlier than some other predictions, and reach 2.45 billion by the end of 2009." [infoSync World]

Guess where a lot of that growth is going to come from?

G eneration Text

"New research from Mobile Youth - a mobile telecoms consultancy - found that 700,000 (20%) of primary school children own mobile phones and that the under 10s "represent the fastest-growing segment of mobile phone ownership within Britain".

'They are the key fashion accessory which no self respecting child can do without,' says the report. It predicts that by 2006, more than one million primary school kids (a third of all five-to-nine year olds) will own mobiles." [The Guardian]

Forget Harm, Mobile Phones Help Kids
Think Clearly?
09/23/2004 03:21 AM
Every month or so, yet another study comes out that says mobile phone radiation either does, or does not, cause some sort of bodily harm, often in the form of cancer. Each study is trumpeted by the press as the definitive study on the subject, only to have that view completely turned around a month later. That's why we tend not to write about those sorts of studies any more (and, yes, there was one earlier this week). However, the head of the PTA in the UK is now claiming that mobile phones help kids think clearly. He's quoted as saying: "From a perspective of pupil performance, it can enhance things, because that heating effect actually improves the neuron transfers between neural pathways, and therefore your thinking ability goes up." This, of course, seems to go well beyond what any study has -- though, the guy in question claims a nameless British scientist told him this, so, obviously, it must be true.

hong-kong_kidz.jpg imageHong Kong's kids have the highest percentage of cellphone ownership of any country in Asia, according to a report by research company TNS. The results of the survey show that 29 percent of Hong Kong children (from ages 6 to 15) have a mobile phone, compared to 25 percent in Australia and Japan. Hong Kong also remains the number one market penetration rate, with 83 percent of its 6.8 million people owning a phone.

Maybe I'm inured to the mass injection of gadgets into our societies, but personally, I'm fine with this.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

International Phones Now at Stage 2: The
“Safety Device”
03/31/2005 08:57 AM
The ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are increasingly confident to travel internationally. Reporter Fears PVR, But No One Else
Seems To Mind

Reporter Fears PVR, But No One Else
Seems To Mind
07/30/2004 01:40 PM
It looks like a reporter in Australia is really trying to make a story out of nothing today. Apparently, there's a new personal video recorder device being released there that lets people completely eliminate ads while recording whatever show they want. Broadcasters in the US have fought against such things in the ReplayTV device, and clearly the reporter on the article is trying to stir up some controversy. What's funny, though, for all of the scary language the reporter uses about how this will impact advertisers and networks she can't come up with a quote to back it up. In fact, the quotes paint a completely different picture. All the quotes from network people say they don't think it's a big deal, and believe that they'll be fine. Then, the reporter goes down a different path, and suggests the company, Faulconbridge, offering this ICE PVR may be somehow stealing the networks' programming guides. However, simply asking him shows that's not true, and they have staff creating their own programming guides. So, despite all of the scary language written by the reporter, it doesn't seem like anyone (other than the reporter) is actually that concerned about the launch of this device.
