Foleyhttp://www.
eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1561989,00.aspOn Monday,
Microsoft released some of its code under an open-source license, and
posted it on SourceForge, the open-source code repository. To date,
Microsoft has made its source code available under a variety of
licensing mechanisms, all under its "shared source" umbrella. But
until today, the company had not released code under what is commonly
considered a true open-source license. Microsoft made available an
internally developed product called the Windows Installer XML (WiX) to
SourceForge. The code is downloadable
here.

02/11/2004 11:00 AMAllegiance was an incredible experience for the development team. We
were all first-timers, trying our best to create a fun, innovative,
challenging game. We think we succeeded there, even if we failed at
being commercially successful. Allegiance seemed to die all too
soon—for a variety of reasons. But we’ve been amazed at the level
to which some of the Allegiance fans have remained hard-core. We’re
astounded at the progress that has been made at creating new factions,
hosting new servers, replacing authentication, etc. It seems that
Allegiance hasn’t really died.

Open Source Community Building
Open Source Community Building
03/24/2005 05:27 AMOpen Source Community Building by Matthias
Stürmerhttp://opensource.
mit.edu/papers/sturmer.pdfAbstractBuilding an active and helpful community around an open source
project is a complex task for its leaders. Therefore investigations in
this work are intended to define the optimum starting position of an
open source project and to identify recommendable promoting actions by
project leaders to enlarge community size in a healthy way. For this
paper eight interviews with committed representatives of successful
open source projects have led to over 12 hours of conversation about
community building. Analysing the statements of these experienced
community members exposed helpful activities that led to the presently
prospering communities of their projects. Summarizing the conclusions
of this qualitative research a table with conditions for successful
open source project initialisation and a subject-level promotion
matrix of community building could be created. They include
suggestions on how to start a new open source project and how to
improve and increase the community of an already advanced open source
project.

04/29/2004 11:56 AMEarlier this month we joked about how the new Avalanche CIO co-op was
really
open
source with a $30,000 gate. It appears that the group doesn't see
it as a joke. That's
exactly how they
describe themselves. The interview with one of the founders also
raises some interesting points about how the group is going to avoid a
SCO-IBM situation where some of the software that goes into the co-op
is accused of having intellectual property violations. The guy from
the co-op sort of brushes that off by saying they have a top
intellectual property law firm who will review all submissions to make
sure they're safe. Considering the number of software patents showing
up these days on all sorts of minor software processes, and the fact
that I'd put IBM's lawyers up against any top IP law firm any day and
they certainly didn't expect SCO to go on this bizarre run, I doubt
that's much real protection. If anything, this may end up opening up
the companies in the co-op to more (pointless, of course) patent
lawsuits by revealing their internal software. For instance, the
first piece of software in the co-op was an internal application from
Best Buy. Before this, no one outside of Best Buy really knew what it
did, since it was all internal. Thus, there was almost no risk of
being accused of patent infringment. However, by opening it up
(admittedly to just a few companies right now) they risk someone who
has patents on some tiny process used in their software to come back
and sue them
and any of the other companies in the co-op who
downloads it. Maybe after a few of these types of lawsuits the
companies involved in the co-op will become a bit more pro-active in
fighting against bad software patents.

ome.htmlFree/open source software (F/OSS) is software
for which the human-readable source code is made available to the user
of the software, who can then modify the code in order to fit the
software to the user’s needs. The source code is the set of written
instructions that define a program in its original form, and when
it’s made fully accessible programmers can read it, modify it, and
redistribute it, thereby improving and adapting the software. In this
manner the software evolves at a rate unmatched by traditional
proprietary software. For many years free/open source software has
been building momentum. Beginning amidst the technical cultures that
produced the Internet and World Wide Web, it is now causing quite a
stir in the commercial world as large software corporations are
finding themselves competing against commercially available open
source software.
This new demand for free and open source
software has piqued interest among scholars in disciplines ranging
from sociology to economics to social psychology, and has raised
questions in fields of application ranging from innovation processes
to strategic management. As an aid to these scholars, they offer the
Free / Open Source Research Community. By having visitors contribute
to our research databases, they hope to establish a community of
information exchange that will lead to a greater understanding of open

In the spirit of free and
open source software (F/OSS), they are attempting to establish a
community in which information will be freely exchanged, so that
others may further the understanding of open source and its
implications outside the realm of software development. They invite
researchers to post their papers on open source and free software
here, and to add themselves to the research directory, so that their
community can become steadily larger and more comprehensive.
