A Story of MMORPG Double-Crss

A Story of MMORPG Double-Crss 08/22/2004 03:55 PM

The Great Scam: I found this story via Boing Boing. It's the detailed description of how a guy scammed several other players in Eve Online out of 480 million credits.

This is a story of deception, intrigue, and doublecrossing. It is a story of liars, bandits, and greed. It is a story of the worst of the human condition, and how the motive for profit will drive a normally nice guy to the deepest depths of evil and betrayal.

It took me 30 minutes to read, but, oh, was it worth it. It's so well-written, it's scary. He builds up to the climax like a seasoned novelist, and the payoff is worth every minute.

It also provides a fascinating look into the lives of hardcore MMORPG players. It's a little disturbing how their online lives cross over into their real lives, with people threatening to kill this guy in real life if they ever catch him.

Warning: the story is exceptionally profane. But, man, it's good.

Weinberger: "free access to every work
of creativity in the world is a better
world"
09/21/2004 04:55 PM
Cory Doctorow: David Weinberger, author of the brilliant and seminal Small Pieces Loosely Joined, has posted a draft of a great speech on copyright that he's giving at the World Economic Forum in NYC tomorrow:
[F]or one moment, I'd like you to perform an exercise in selective attention. Forget every other consideration — even though they're fair and important considerations — and see if you can acknowledge that a world in which everyone has free access to every work of creativity in the world is a better world. Imagine your children could listen to any song ever created anywhere. What a blessing that would be!

...We publish stuff that gets its meaning and its reality by being read, viewed or heard. An unpublished novel is about as meaningful and real as an imaginary novel. It needs its readers to be. But readers aren't passive consumers. We reimagine the book, we complete the vision of the book. Readers appropriate works, make them their own. Listeners and viewers, too. In making a work public, artists enter into partnership with their audience. The work succeeds insofar as the audience makes it their own, takes it up, understands it within their own unpredictable circumstances. It leaves the artist's hands and enters our lives. And that's not a betrayal of the work. That's its success. It succeeds insofar as we hum it, quote it, appropriate it so thoroughly that we no longer remember where the phrase came from. That's artistic success, although it's a branding failure.

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?
12/04/2003 03:52 AM
Last month when everyone was making a big deal over the news that the online game Second Life had decided that players own any intellectual property they create in the game, I said it was a bad idea, since it basically took all of the problems of our intellectual property system and moved them into the virtual world - where it was likely to get more confusing. Over at LawMeme, James Grimmelmann, has been thinking a lot about that very idea and has written an insanely long - but absolutely worth reading - discussion about intellectual property issues as it relates to games. It's impossible to summarize his points, but he explores many of the issues in-depth and appears to have thought about these issues in much more detail than the designers of the various games. What it really seems to come down to is the question of whether or not in-game actions are simply covered by the End User License Agreement (which basically becomes the Constitution for that game) or if real laws in the real world should apply.

In the aftermath of the tsunamis that devastated Asia in late December 2004, observers pointed out that lack of official, credible information gave victims and governments in the area little prior warning of the impending disaster. Although still in the developmental stages, a partnership of the Global Disaster Information Network (GDIN) and the Organsation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is creating an information system that may significantly reduce the impact of future natural and manmade disasters. Native American Pueblo and Navajo Nations in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado are providing pilot sites for the GDIN system. [PRWEB Jan 5, 2005]

It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).

One frustration too many: time for a rant. When a bug in Mozilla (keyboard focus is on the previously selected window) has remained unfixed for at least 18 to 24 months, when XFree86 mouse interaction with PS/2 or GPM remains hazardous and makes a system unusable and that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?

Are you one of the few people with the time and money and expertise sufficient to delve into the source yourself to fix the problem?

Do we have it "too good" and these niggles are, by comparison to the rest of the world's computer users (Windows), absolute peanuts?
