Sony to Launch Music Download Service
for PSP
02/01/2005 09:09 PM
The Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new
music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new
download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide
with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the
service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video
content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can
accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple
of movies.
I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it
can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including
productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

05/06/2004 11:38 AM
Sony
launched a noninfringing music downloading service,
entering a growing market still dominated by Apple's iTunes and
including a revised Napster .
Connect is based on a downloadable client ,
offers more than five hundred thousand songs, and offers
now-traditional pricing: ninety-nine cents per song, with a
subscription option. Additionally, Connect is appealing to
indepedent labels for more content. As with iTunes, a digital
rights management ( DRM
) application,
MagicGate DRM , restricts sharing of downloaded music files.
Connect's file format, ATRAC 3 , is
not compatible with the popular iPod portable music player.
The desktop client
is available for Windows machines only.

04/06/2005 12:33 PMSony has unveiled its new WALKMAN, a 20GB HDD player with an aluminium
body and credit-card-size dimensions that can hold up to 13,000 songs
or 900 CDs worth of music.
The NW-HD5 offers a 40 hour replaceable battery. It also features a
large and easy-to-navigate 7-line LED screen. The display is
synchronised to hand movements, flipping from horizontal to vertical
depending on moves, eliminating the need for “right side up”. The
NW-HD5’s specially designed sensor kicks in when dropped, providing
immediate and effective shock protection. The NW-HD5 comes supplied
with SonicStage3.1 software that plays both MP3 and ATRAC formats.
The player is available in a choice of black, silver or red and is
expected to be in UK shops next month. There is no announcement on a
North American launch.

09/07/2004 10:40 AMSony Corp. will begin selling its first high-definition video
camcorder in Japan on Oct. 15, and worldwide by the end of the year,
the company said in an announcement Tuesday. While the camcorder is
compatible with Japan's HDV high-definition digital video format,
users cannot store video on Sony's Blu-ray Disc format. The HDR-FX1
camcorder is Sony's first step in promoting high definition video as
the standard format for home-use camcorders, but its price makes it
too expensive for most families initially, the company said.
