iPod users' broadside at Windows Media
07/14/2004 11:56 AMApple's success in transforming its iPod into the market-leading music
player appears to have undermined some CD protection technologies
based on Microsoft software. Last month Velvet Revolver album
'Contraband' hit number one in the US charts - despite the fact it
used copy protection and wouldn't play on an iPod. Cnet reports that
the two companies behind the most-used copy protection technologies
are "scrambling to create new versions of their technologies that are
compatible with Apple's popular digital music player". And their
efforts could "ultimately be a setback to recent Microsoft strides
into the music business".

Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PMAaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports
about a
scam
claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but
that. The company in question is really just offering one of those
silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by
caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband
at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's
also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you
need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise
intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make
outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those
who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which
point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of
broadband knowledge would know were false.

The Best For Broadband: AOL vs. MSN
02/11/2004 02:35 AMAre America Online (TWX ) and Microsoft's (MSFT ) MSN relevant in the
broadband era? The two online services' latest packages, AOL 9.0 for
Broadband and MSN 9, try to make a case but manage no more than
partial success. AOL's broadband offering is the richer and better
integrated of the two, but I'm left wondering if either is worth the
expense.

US Broadband jumps
05/20/2004 08:33 AM From the May 2004 Bandwidth Report: US broadband penetration grew by
1.9 points in April, with 47.87% of active Internet users enjoying a
high-speed connection at home. This jump of nearly 2 points is 2.5
times the average rate of broadband growth. 52.13% of US home users
dial into the Internet with "narrowband" connections of 56Kbps or
less.* Meanwhile, broadband growth in other countries suggests a limit
of 75% saturation... As of April 2004, most users in the US connect to
the Internet using dial-up modems of 56Kbps or less. 42.74% use 56Kbps
modems, 6.99% use 28/33.3Kbps, and 2.4%...
Dialup vs. Broadband
Dialup vs. Broadband
04/09/2004 03:54 PMDouglas Bowman's comparison of Dialup vs.
Broadband is quite enlightening. It's been about 5 years since I
went broadband, and I have to agree... without it the web sucks. I
really just don't surf the net at all, if I'm forced to use dial-up...
I find something else todo, which, makes Bush's
Broadband by 2007 comments sound pretty neat, but also wasteful as
a way to spend tax-dollars.

Stratospheric Broadband
Stratospheric Broadband
07/07/2004 11:03 PMMetropolitan-wide broadband services may soon be coming from
overhead. Sanswire Networks, LLC hopes to bring broadband to entire
metropolitan areas via tiny airships. Atlanta, Georgia may be the
first city to benefit from this interesting digital communication
service, starting as early as next week.
Ground-based wireless equipment will coordinate signal
dissemination using a Stratellite floating high over the city. The
Stratellites are similar to satellites; however, the new devices are
stationed in the stratosphere rather than being in space orbit.
According to Sanswire Networks, a Stratellite is a high-altitude
airship that when in place in the stratosphere will provide a
stationary platform for transmitting various types of wireless
communications services currently transmitted from cell towers and
satellites. It is not a balloon or a blimp. It is a high-altitude
airship made of Spectra and powered by solar powered electrical
engines, each Stratellite will reach its final altitude by utilizing a
helium and nitrogen filled double envelope. Once in place at 65,000
feet each Stratellite will remain in one Global Positioning System
(GPS) coordinate, providing the ideal wireless transmission platform.
Each Stratellite has a payload capacity of several thousand pounds and
clear line-of-site to approximately 300,000 square miles, an area
roughly the size of Texas. However, the Company’s initial plan
is to use one Stratellite for each major metropolitan area.

Broadband Changes Slower Than You Might
Think
12/29/2004 01:55 PMBack in the late 90s boom years, a lot of companies bet quite a bit of
money on the fact that broadband usage would spread very quickly --
and that would open up all kinds of new services and applications that
couldn't really be done over a slow dialup connection. A lot of those
offerings are no longer around. Now, however, the broadband usage
really is catching on around the world, a new look at broadband users
suggests
they really haven't jumped on "broadband"
applications and services just yet. They
are using the
internet more often and for longer periods of time. It does seem like
a more essential part of their lives -- but that's more for the
always-on nature of it, rather than the speed. People are doing
things like file sharing and downloading content. A few more people
are doing VoIP or video -- but, despite the article's headline
suggesting that broadband is somehow "changing our culture," it
appears that the really innovative uses of broadband haven't
completely caught on yet. This is probably a good thing. It seems
like the things that are changing are mostly happening gradually,
somewhat under the radar, which lets them avoid the hype. There will
still be plenty of innovative offerings making use of broadband
connections, but they may take some time.
