John Shirley has a webl0g12/24/2003 12:14 PM One of my favorite authors, John Shirley, has a blog. John is the
original cyberpunk writer. If William Gibson is Johnny Rotten, John
Shirley is Richard Hell. Here's what Gibson says in his forward to
Shirley's 1980 novel City Come A-Walkin':
John Shirley was cyberpunk's patient zero, first locus of the virus,
certifiably virulent. A Carrier. City Come A-Walkin' is evidence of
that and more. (I was somewhat chagrined, rereading it recently, to
see just how much of my own early work takes off from this one novel.)
Shirley made the plastic-covered Sears sofa that was the main body of
seventies sf recede wonderfully. Discovering his fiction was like
hearing Patti Smith's Horses for the first time: the archetypal form
passionately re-inhabited by a debauched yet strangely virginal
practitioner, one whose very ability to do this at all was constantly
thrown into question by the demands of what was in effect a
shamanistic act. There is a similar ragged-ass derring-do, the sense
of the artist burning to speak in tongues. They invoke their
particular (and often overlapping, and indeed she was one of his) gods
and plunge out of downscale teenage bedrooms, brandishing shards of
imagery as peculiarly-shaped as prison shivs.

Radio Interview with John Brady Kiesling and John H. Brown
Radio Interview with John Brady Kiesling and John H. Brown03/15/2003 06:05 AM KALW in San Francisco did an hour
long radio interview with John Brady Kiesling and John H. Brown,
the American Foreign Service officers who resigned over Bush's Iraq
policy. Both are impressive speakers, and Kiesling is as articulate
and as convincing as his letter:
If we can't convince
our historical allies that this is a good thing to do, there is no way
we are going to be able to convince the Arab world.
People have to take a stand. War may be inevitable, but we need to do
what we can to keep our consciences clean.
There is a policy to make America safer, but this is not it.
"America is still the safest country in the world. The
administration is trying to scare people with this talk about terror
and duct tape. We should use our safety and prosperity and our
strength to do good and we can do good."
Brown said his resignation was "in part a result of Andrew Card's
comment, 'Never launch a product in August.' War is not a
product."
I learned a lot from listening to it. Recommended. Requires

Six Log - The Six Apart Webl0g03/13/2003 10:15 AM We've started Six Log, a weblog representing our company, Six Apart.
Basically it's a place for technology postings, not limited...
I get lot's of request for links, and I cannot always post comments
on every site that is submitted. Without exception those that are
running MP3 weblogs have a special place in my heart. Not a lot of
content on this new site but we will give him the benefit of the
doubt. [cleanly-copacetic.tripod.c

I have decided to split my weblog in two. I basically have two
target audiences, those people who are reading this blog for Safari
news and updates, and those people who are visiting my personal blog
(i.e., friends and family).
This blog will remain the technically inclined one, and I'll
continue to blog about Safari news, Web topics, and so on. The
personal one (including all personal blog entries) has moved. I'm
still ironing out some kinks with Safari (links on the right-hand side
don't work), but if you care, you can find the personal blog here.

What is a webl0g?01/27/2004 02:23 AM Whenever we update the Sites Drawer (the list of feeds that comes with
NetNewsWire) I look at a bunch of feeds and their descriptions.
Here are some descriptions from the list, just to give you a
flavor:
Random Ramblings Regularly
Rants, raves, and random thoughts on life and American culture
Rants on spam, business, digital music, patents, and other assorted
random stuff.
random thoughts on games, art, geek culture and living in new york.
random and occassionally coherent musings
random musings and explorations from the mind of [withheld]
random thoughts and ramblings
The people have voted! If anyone ever asks you what a weblog is, you
can state, with confidence, that it’s random rants,
ramblings, and musings.
It is also, on occasion, punditry. And good old-fashioned commentary
is not unheard-of.

How to write a webl0g
How to write a webl0g09/19/2004 03:48 AM Yesterday somebody pointed me towards a little essay published 2 years
ago by Mark Bernstein, 10 Tips on Writing the Living Web. What a gem!
I can't believe I haven't seen this before. As soon as I read it, I
knew that if I searched for the title, it would be cited thousands of
times. It has all the hallmarks of a classic, the first draft of
Strunk & White for writing on the web. It's a great essay about
writing on the web, but also just about writing. I won't cheat by
excerpting large portions, I'll just demonstrate that Bernstein knows
how to write a headline: Write for a reason Write often Write tight
Make good friends Find good enemies Let the story unfold Stand up,
speak out Be sexy Use your archives Relax! Highly recommended for
anyone who wants to write for the web, or just wants to learn how to
write better. Next time someone asks me, how do I start a blog, I
think I'll send them this link. After reading the essay, I became even
more impatient for Bernstein to finish the version of Tinderbox for
Windows that he is working on, so I have a chance to try it out....
