MSDN subscribers can now get their hands on the version of Longhorn that WinHEC attendees got yesterday. Microsoft has posted build 4074 of Longhorn on the MSDN Subscriber Downloads site. Interestingly, the iso of build 4074 registers at 733.75 MBs, meaning it must be burned onto a DVD. The iso for 4074 is nearly 100 MBs larger than the iso distributed at last year's PDC. Anyway, click the headline to get started! Microsoft has said they are making this available only for download, and will not ship Longhorn build 4074 with the June updates.

The Milestone 7.2 (M7.2) drop of Longhorn will be given to WinHEC attendees this week and will be available to MSDN Subscribers for download RSN*. The plan is to provide regular LH Milestone drops to the community as we have them, regardless of whether they really provide more functionality/stability or not. The next version of Visual Studio, codenamed "Whidbey," introduces a technology codenamed ClickOnce that allows developers to write Windows Forms applications that utilize the powerful features of the client, yet are as hassle-free to deploy and update as a Web page. ClickOnce allows developers to deploy and update their applications by simply copying the files to a Web site and doesn't require separate setup authoring. These applications are isolated from other applications, and as a result have the TCO advantages of a Web browser-based application.

Chapter 7: Creating Mobility-Aware
Longhorn Applications

Chapter 7: Creating Mobility-Aware
Longhorn Applications
05/06/2004 12:00 AM
Mobility is another major theme of Longhorn. Laptops, notebooks, and Tablet PCs are specific and identifiable hardware form factors that support scenarios distinct from those supported by desktop PCs. Mobile PCs comprise a large and growing segment of the overall PC market. Mobile PCs make up about 30 percent of the worldwide PC market now, and the segment is growing more rapidly than desktops. In absolute terms, shipments of mobile PCs in the United States and Western Europe have increased year after year, whereas desktop shipments have declined (IDC PC Tracker, June 2002). Given that laptops cost more than desktops and given an economy in which the overall PC market is shrinking, the growth of laptop shipments and share is a striking and important trend.
