05/10/2004 05:53 AMTheyRule is a brilliant Flash app that allows you to interactively
explore and map the interlocking directorships of the most powerful
corporations in the world. They've just relaunched a 2004 edition with
currect data.
They Rule allows you to create maps of the interlocking directories of
the top companies in the US in 2004.
The data was collected from their websites and SEC filings in early
2004, so it may not be completely accurate - companies merge and
disappear and directors shift boards.

My German is iffy -- it's mostly really
just a funny voice I make -- but I think most of these notebook
computer design concepts on PC-Welt are pretty self-explanatory. They
don't all look practical (I'm looking at you, strange Klingon-looking
battle laptop), but if you like to reminded just how many roll-up
screens and interestingly-folded laptops we have (Answer: One million
zeros) there's a lot of fun stuff to check out. I've been told the
first page is the winner of the competition, while the second page is
all the runners-up. (Thanks, Thien!)

"Digital Communities" cash prize
12/29/2003 12:23 PMSo, what exactly does one call cash prize for weblogs? Bling-blog?
Digital arttfest
Ars Electronica
recently announced that the 2004 competition will include the new
category "Digital Communities," awarding cash prizes to projects of
great sociopolitical relevance. Howard Rheingold posts more details
here, including a snip from instructions on how to apply. Thanks to
all who have suggested BoingBoing as an entrant, but since co-editor
Cory is a judge this will not be possible.
Prix Ars Electronica, the foremost international prize for
computer-based art, offers an open platform for the encounter with
leading-edge trends in art, technology, and society. Over the last 17
years, more than 24,800 works from 87 countries have been submitted
for Prix Ars Electronica consideration. With a total prize money of
130,000 Euro this year, and no participation fee, it is the highest
endowed and most reknown competition in this field worldwide.
The new category "Digital Communities" - to be awarded for the first
time in 2004 - encompasses the wide-ranging social consequences of the
Internet as well as the latest developments in the domain of mobile
communications and wireless networks. "Digital Communities" will
spotlight bold and inspired innovations impacting human coexistence,
bridging the digital divide regarding gender as well as geography, or
creating outstanding social software and enhancing accessibility of
technological-social infrastructure.

05/12/2004 09:58 AMYesterday, I had the opportunity to speak at the Open Source and Free
Software conference, held by the Knowledge Media Design Institute
at the University of Toronto.
The conference was designed to explore the legal, moral, political,
social, commercial, and technical perspectives of open source and free
software, to build a broader understanding of the movement.
I spoke on a panel entitled Education
and Public Knowledge: Open Access, Open Content. The aim of the
panel was to understand how the lessons from open source and free
software could help develop a thriving open-content ecosystem, within
the context of education.
The entire conference will be online soon -- check it out!

Customers Angry Over Enterprise Software
Customers Angry Over Enterprise Software
02/11/2004 09:38 PMIf you've been involved in the buying or selling of enterprise
software, you're likely aware that much of it is something of a scam.
The prices are quite flexible, and the "real" costs show up much
later, when people realize that (a) the product doesn't really work
the way they wanted it to (b) it needs ridiculous amounts of expensive
customization, maintenance and training and (c) the vendor is always
breathing down their neck to pay for an "upgrade" and service
contract. As it stands, the incentives for the vendors are to make
the initial price seem low, but to make sure the actual software
doesn't work very well. It appears that customers are starting to
catch on and
increasingly angry about standard practices in enterprise
software. They're also (finally!) threatening to stop playing
into the system and changing their buying habits. They're training
their own people to support the system, they're renegotiating
maintenance contracts and they're switching to "more accommodating"
vendors. Clearly, there's room for companies to come in with much
more reasonable offerings. In some cases, I imagine this is going to
take the form of ASP or hosted offerings, but those are still limited
depending on what the customer needs. It could make sense for a
company to pull a PR move and start advertising much more transparent
pricing plans to better attract customers who feel more comfortable
knowing what they're really paying for.

Enough With The Useless Enterprise
Software Upgrades
Enough With The Useless Enterprise
Software Upgrades
07/09/2004 11:41 AMFor
Techdirt Corporate
Intelligence, we've used Quickbooks to keep track of our
bookkeeping. It's a decent, though not spectacular program. We
bought a copy of Quickbooks Pro 2001 about the time it came out and
have used it ever since. There was never any reason to upgrade,
because the product worked fine as is, and none of the upgrade
features were worthwhile. Our accountant, always looking for ways
that we can save money, specifically recommended that there was
absolutely no good reason to upgrade. However, at the end of April,
Intuit
"sunset"
a> the product. This is fair. It makes sense for a company to
eventually stop supporting old products. What is not fair, is that
the product suddenly lost features because of this. We weren't
worried about it being sunset, because we had never needed
support from Intuit. However, starting in May, when we went to email
out our customer invoices, the software said that it could no longer
send emails because the product was sunset and we needed to upgrade.
In other words, they didn't just sunset support for the product, they
sunset features of the product and held our invoices ransom
until we would pay for an upgrade. I called up Intuit and was told
repeatedly that they needed to do this in order to give "the best
support possible." I explained repeatedly that I understood the need
to sunset support of products, but could not understand the need to
sunset features that worked the day before. I had been a happy
Intuit customer until the day they decided to hold my invoices for
ransom, and now I was being forced to upgrade. The Intuit customer
service rep promised to "escalate" the issue, and insisted I would
hear back within a week. "Within a week" apparently means "never" to
people at Intuit. Over at News.com, Charles Cooper is noting that companies are
increasingly tired of the forced enterprise software upgrade path,
which only helps the enterprise software company. He points out that
these companies are reaching a point where they're simply not going to
accept it any more, and software vendors need to realize this -- or
someone else is going to come along who does things better. In the
meantime, does anyone know of a good alternative to Quickbooks? So
far, investigations into their main competitors suggest every one is
just as bad. It's no fun going with the best of a terrible group.
There must be a better solution out there, and if there isn't,
shouldn't that represent an opportunity for someone to do things
right?

10/31/2003 06:18 PMRemember when "enterprise portals" were a big deal? Back when Yahoo

the online advertising market took its (temporary) hiatus, they had
this vision of taking their "portal" technology and bringing it to the

didn't hear much about it after that. That's probably because not too
many people were interested. Now, Yahoo has announced that
they'

products, with a focus on enterprise instant messaging, but it's
certainly not going to be a big part of their business.
