NEW YORK - Amazon.com Inc. has two businesses: The one it runs in November and December during the height of the holiday shopping rush, and the one it runs the rest of the year. Building a cost-effective IT infrastructure that can scale to handle the year-end crush while remaining inexpensive during slower months is one of the obstacles Amazon.com's IT staff grapples with, Vice President of Infrastructure Tom Killalea said Tuesday in a presentation at LinuxWorld.

The Recording Industry Association of America 's subpoena campaign , which has affected many college campuses, faces a new, legal challenge this week . SBC Communications is suing to protest alleged privacy violations by the RIAA's numerous cease-and-desist orders. While the RIAA claims the Digital Millenium Copyright Act ( DMCA ) enables direct approaches to internet service providers ( ISP s) who support infringers, SBC argues that the constitutional right to privacy trumps it.

Verizon fought and lost a similar case to the RIAA last year.

iPods
12/24/2004 12:55 PM
Spotty shortages abound for Apple Computer Inc.'s wildly popular iPod digital music players amid Wall Street expectations for a doubling in sales of the devices in the holiday quarter, analysts said on Wednesday. "I was at an Apple store just yesterday and the place was packed with people looking at iPods and iPod accessories," said Susan Kevorkian, an analyst at IDC in San Mateo, California.

"There's no question that iPods are an extremely hot item this holiday season." Some financial analysts have forecast that Apple will sell 4 million of the market-leading devices in the current quarter, double the number it sold in the previous period, when they accounted for 23 percent of the Cupertino, California-based company's overall revenue.

Wired notes that Michael Mace, a former Apple employee has written a scathing entry to a Computer History Museum weblog entitled "Who Killed Apple Computer?" Mace, who worked at Apple from 1987 to 1997, states that despite the brilliance of the employees at Apple, they were uncooperative, selfish, and "better at designing t-shirts and org charts" than they were user interfaces. Mace will join more than 1,000 other ex-Apple employees at the AppleLore, a reunion hosted...
