Media Player-less Windows

Media Player-less Windows 03/28/2005 03:55 PM

In my opinion, forcing Microsoft to ship media player-less Windows won't have any effect on Microsoft's media format dominance.  Instead, Microsoft should have been forced to place media player IP and code in the public domain as well as bundle several competitive media players.  Of course, the monopolist side of me still think anti-monopoly whiners are just wimps but I'll change my tune when I have a lucrative reason to.

Removing Windows Media Player

Removing Windows Media Player 07/02/2004 01:22 AM
Microsoft apparently requires “greater clarification” on which specific files need to be removed so that it can comply with the EU’s court ruling. Microsoft has been ordered to remove it’s Media Player from Windows immediately, but apparently this has caused some confusion. Now if someone asks me to remove a program from my computer, I know that I am competent enough to understand what “files need to removed”. I believe this is just another Microsoft stall tactic and should be looked upon as such.

Microsoft Windows Media Player 10

Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 09/03/2004 08:18 AM
The most striking change to Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, the much-awaited upgrade to the player/jukebox that ships on most new PCs, is its dramatic cosmetic overhaul. Windows Media Player (WMP) no longer feels like a freebie utility thrown in with the OS (think Notepad), but is an application you'll actually want to use. By giving you easy access to all of your multimedia files (music, photos, and video) and helping you accomplish the tasks you're likely to want to do with them, WMP 10 at least equals — and in our estimation surpasses — the current leader in the field, MusicMatch Jukebox 9.

EU: Remove Media Player from Windows 12/24/2004 12:24 PM
A European court has denied Microsoft's request to suspend antitrust remedies levied by the EU last March, ordering the company to immediately ship a version of Windows without its bundled media player. The WMP-free versions of Windows XP Home and Professional will tentatively go by the moniker "Reduced Media Edition," BetaNews has learned.
