document provides a comprehensive overview of Apple's current state of
business for Apple's first quarter of its fiscal year 2005, which

plan for the money
Commentary: Microsoft finally shows a
plan for the money
07/21/2004 06:18 PMOK, how would you like your $75 billion? Large bills? Unmarked bills?
Don't spend it all at once! Microsoft pre-empted its July 22 earnings
call and on Tuesday announced a $3 special dividend, a $32 billion
buyback over four years, and an increase in its quarterly dividend.
Investors will now receive a $0.32 cash dividend, double the previous
$0.16 dividend. The dividend yield is now 1 percent. (Although they
could have been more bold here … for a 2 percent or higher yield.) The
special dividend rewards existing shareholders and the increased
quarterly dividend is attractive to the more income-oriented
shareholders and will probably attract new income-oriented investors
to MSFT. So, there's something in this for everyone!

Remixing Google's Search Results
Remixing Google's Search Results
06/02/2004 11:07 PMIt appears that there are a lot of folks out there who are trying to
"remix" Google's interface. The one that got the most press, of
course, was A9, who
built an
entirely new interface to searching Google. Then, there's
Prog (formerly
Proogle), which adds in PageRank info to Google search results. Now
comes the news of
an application called
MoreGoogle, which tries to add additional features to the Google
interface to make it more useful. I haven't tried it (and some folks
may be a bit wary to download a random app and let it hijack their
Google searches), but the article suggests that the author of the
program just wanted to make the Google interface more useful. Once
the program is installed, it basically watches over any Google
searches, and alters the results to make them more useful: adding in
thumbnail images of the website and adding an "open in new window
button." The application adds in some new text ads, that appear to be
part of AdSense (this isn't clearly explained) in order to get some
money back for altering the Google interface. Obviously it would be
pretty simple for Google to add these features themselves, and it's
unclear how legit this particular app really is, but it's still very
cool to see people trying to "remix" Google results to make them more
valuable. Of course, there's a pretty good chance that Google's
lawyers might not find it as cool.

Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,

Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,
Money...
09/03/2004 02:40 PMJeremiah writes
"Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing
the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record
level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From
their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for
the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the
prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to
our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40
million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an
American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period
1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If
I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last
nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P.
Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to
cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales.
Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance
company's radio ad: Money
, Money, Money (mp3 file)."
