Microsoft's Real Definition of Security

Microsoft's Real Definition of Security

Microsoft's Real Definition of Security 05/04/2004 03:30 PM

A friend connects some dots:

1) Gates says repeatedly that security is job 1 at Microsoft, committing engineering time to it before other new products/features. 2) The next big WinXP service pack, first skedded for late last year and then this summer, is supposed to be devoted to big security fixes. 3) The WinXP service pack is delayed again. 4) Today, Microsoft a nnounces new Digital "Rights" Management.
"Ah," concludes my friend, "so that's what they meant by security."

security scheme

STANFORD, Calif. -- Microsoft apparently got the hint: Palladium, its new scheme to fortify the next Windows operating system, win the ever-escalating virus wars, and knuckle down on users trying to share files, wasn't exactly causing the great PR buzz it anticipated. Objective folks who had seen the early plans zeroed in on the fact that under this idea, users were going to lose control of their computers due to monumental back-door access controlled by Microsoft. The company called it "trusted computing," and detractors immediately modified that to read "treacherous computing."

07/02/2004 09:36 AM
Using Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser to surf the Internet has become a marked risk — even with the latest security patches installed. That's the upshot of the discovery of yet another Internet Explorer security hole being exploited by intruders bent on swiping personal information from unwitting Internet users. The SANS Institute Internet Storm Center issued an alert this week about pop-up ads designed to download a program that keeps track any time a PC user clicks to the log-in page of 50 financial institutions worldwide. The program captures log-in information and sends it to another Web site, before the bank can encrypt the data.

Longhorn Security: Real Or Just Bull?

Longhorn Security: Real Or Just Bull? 07/22/2004 11:07 AM
Security in Longhorn will be better when the new operating system is released in 2006 than security in Windows XP, which debuted in 2001 -- or so Microsoft has promised. How much better though, is a matter of how effective Microsoft, as well as Longhorn users, will be at staying one step ahead of the hackers that will surely be gunning for Longhorn vulnerabilities. For I.T. managers planning for Longhorn deployment, the key security factor is the great unknown -- anticipating future vulnerabilities that right now are a glint in the evil eye of hackers. All I.T. can do for now is to upgrade existing systems in anticipation of Longhorn's arrival.
