Microsoft, Spend Your Money!
Microsoft, Spend Your Money!
06/03/2004 12:10 PMI've been thinking about the Sasser worm, which sneaks into your
system and at a minimum ruins the machine's performance—if you have
any left by now, since the patch to stop the worm also ruins the
performance. Such worms are the worst, since they literally "worm"
around the Internet looking for open ports on any machine connected to
the Net. Certain ports have weird vulnerabilities, for reasons only
Microsoft can understand. A worm jumps into the port, then executes
itself inside the OS, which seems eager to oblige. Next thing you
know, your machine is screwed up.

Good Riddance to Bad Tech
Good Riddance to Bad Tech
03/22/2005 04:57 PMThe K5 article Useful Dead Technologies highlighted some older, now
gone (or nearly gone) technologies I sorely miss. "McGrew," the
Kurobots squealed, "You're a geezer! A crazy old, ranting coot! A
Luddite! Aren't there any technologies you're glad are gone?"
Actually, there are. Here are a few of them, and like the useful dead
technologies, some of these inventions (like the power pile and
gravity furnace) were before my time, and I only knew this technology
from being in the possession of an antique something or other like a
house, or just reading about them. Please feel free to add to the
list in the comments section below.
Microsoft security spend greater than

Microsoft security spend greater than
the Star Wars missile system
05/27/2004 03:41 PMMicrosoft has spent more on securing its software than was spent on
the Star Wars missile project, the company's head of security has told
conference guests. An unfortunate analogy for Iain Mulholland to use
since the project was a complete failure and little more than the
private obsession of a few top American ego-maniacs.
But, despite - and because of - this Herculean effort, viruses and
worms are going to get worse. They will become more complex, more
vicious and more dangerous because the days of quick and easy exploits
have come to an end, thanks to the software giant's efforts. According
to one expert anyway.

Social Tech: What an Internet enabled
Insurgency is good for
Social Tech: What an Internet enabled
Insurgency is good for
01/22/2004 06:48 AMInternet insurgencies are great for 2 things:
the persuasion and coercion of those in power or those that want
power. These insurgencies will be really powerful when they move
beyond a blind attachment to a single candidate and start to
exercise their power as outsiders.
A little freethinking: It is easy to imagine the day when
social tech enabled interest groups vie with states for control of the
party primary system. For example: imagine a well funded single
issue group that represents a significant portion of the active voters
setting up a national caucus or convention via Meet-up.
Candidates from the two established parties would be invited to run in
their primary process. Forget 2 parties. What about a
dozen?
