Army Tests Add-On Body Armor
07/27/2004 01:12 PM
I was a little
surprised to learn that the standard issue G.I body armor isn't really
designed to stop the sort of attacks our soldiers are suffering in
modern-day battle. It makes sense, I suppose, since vests designed to
stop bullets doesn't do much to deflect "superheated ... tiny liquid
balls of metal that melt the skin, muscle and tendons right off."
Fortunately, Sandia National Labs and the Army are testing out new
body armor add-ons (sort of like aftermarket ground effects, minus the
neon lights) that are designed to protect exposed soldiers'
extremities against rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs.
DefenseTech has a full story on the armor peripherals, including a
lovely anecdote about a dead pig's leg encased in an armored gauntlet,
then placed two-and-a-half feet away from an exploding anti-tank
shell. Now that's good eatin'.

WSJ Exposes Wi-Fi Range Woes
03/06/2004 01:49 AMWall Street Journal talks to home Wi-Fi users who can't seem to get
the range they need even on small homes: It's a growing problem, and
well explored in this article, that home users are finding that
Wi-Fi's limited range can't cover an entire ranch-style home, much
less a big apartment--or one with thick walls. The article mentions
several solutions, all of which involve additional access points or
devices that promise more range. It misses just one of my favorite
solutions: HomePlug. HomePlug lets you run 14 Mbps over home
electrical wiring, and even has a Wi-Fi access point version to extend
a network into areas that a signal otherwise wouldn't reach....
