A Dating Site That Doesn't Need Its Own
Site
05/04/2004 06:25 PMPeople are starting to realize that Google is more of a platform than
just a search engine. With all the focus on social networks these
days, Google still doesn't search
in those networks. So, one
company is trying to use the power of Google and public websites to
build
their own open social networking dating site. Basically, they get
you to fill out a typical dating profile, which generates some
metadata that you include on your own website. Then, they've
apparently built out some sort of front-end that uses Google to search
sites that include that metadata. What's unclear is how they make
sure that Google will index the right sites that include the data.
The business model for the company is to show Google's contextual ads
along with the results. It's an interesting idea, but I wonder how
comfortable some people are with putting that sort of info on the
"publicly" available web. While it's really not all that different
than on a dating site, a dating site at least is somewhat hidden
behind a protective barrier, and lets the user hide some of their
info.

New PHP community site
New PHP community site
12/04/2003 09:33 PMVia The
Farm, Chris Shiflett is calling for assistance in setting up a new PHP community site to
run along similar lines to use
Perl. Chris has already secured an offer of hosting and support
from O'Reilly and is now seeking offers of help from potential
contributers. PHP has long needed a site of this kind (PHP Builder has lost a lot of
momentum since being sold by Tim Perdue) so this could be a worth
while project to get involved with if you have the time.
I wonder if Python would benefit from something like this? Python
already has an excellent decentralised community centered mainly
around the Python newsgroups, blogs and mailing lists, but it would be
nice if Python.org provided more
community oriented features.

More On The New Site Design
More On The New Site Design
01/25/2003 11:53 PMThanks for everyone's feedback on the new design, keep it coming.
I fixed a bug in the commenting system where emails where getting
shown when people did not want them to be. Feel free to just test the
commenting system, I want to weed out any errors. If you do have
problems, let me know what browser and platform you are on.
I'd like to explain the new CMS in detail. I explained it well to G.K. Nelson
of Stonefishspine in email, and below is a part of that conversation
that I think explains the system well.
The CMS uses PHP/MySql, and just a touch of Apache work.
The way it works is there is a page called error.php that all bad
requests are forwarded to (401,403, and 404 errors). Then, the error
page determines if you were requesting a blog page, and if so delivers
that to you. The whole thing is transparent. Ex: When you request
http://www.readinged.com/blog/archives/December-2002/ the server sees
that there is no such file, and directs you to the error page. The
error page sees that you requested something within /blog/, and feeds
you what you wanted without you knowing any different. And it will
work with search engines because of the transparency of the whole
thing; you never know you're actually hitting an error page. The
advantage that I see is you get a clean URL scheme that you can adapt
however you want without having to actually maintain all of those
pages. The only disadvantage I see is its going to cause a lot of
"bad request" hits in log files, but I can live with
that.
I got the idea to design the system this way from PHP.net. If you
are not familiar with the PHP website, they use a system similar to
this for bad requests. If you request http://www.php.net/strtolower
their site engine will redirect you to the function page for the
strtolower() function, who's URL is actually quite longer than what
you need to type in.
