Even though we've established that, like most phones and PDAs, the Treo 600's camera is wretched, do not lose all hope. Someone named 'Thppfft' (which, oddly, is at least the second person I know to use that Bill the Cat reference as a nickname) has posted some software called 'Pickem'...

Imagine having a van that had 13 cameras and took a picture every 15 feet. The applications are unlimited I would love to have them drive thru my grandfathers property this would give me a visual record of what state the property is in. Do this every few years and you would have one heck of a record. BUt think about using it for homeland security etc. Insurance adjusters like it and homeland defense does to. [Yahoo News]

Making the case for a smoking gun: All the dots connected, and w here'd all these dots come from anyway? inthesetimes.com does a great job of pulling from many diverse resources to debunk the "everyone thought he had WMD" arguement, and washingtontimes.com gives an excellent refresher on pre 9/11 Iraq strategy. CleanTV (currently in the early stages of construction) is th is guy's new web site. It will log instances of "offensive" material shown on broadcast television, enable offended TV viewers to send email directly to local station owners and management, and/or send emails to the station's local and national advertisers. What happens to advertisers who ignore the email campaign and continue to sponsor shows that CleanTV deems offensive? - "If an advertiser continues to support offensive advertising, they will be targeted for local and national boycott. On the local level, newspapers are notified of the boycott and CleanTV volunteers will demonstrate at the advertiser's place of business until the advertiser decides to rescind their support of offensive programming."

If you're patient, I think I'm now ready to test videoconferencing using AOL IM, MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger. I picked up the webcam on the weekend and configured it for these three services. My addresses are:

AOL - DaveLPollard
MSN - same as my e-mail address (click on 'E-mail me' link in upper right sidebar)
Yahoo - harpoon_dodger

My Skype address is davepollard, if you want to test it out (not yet webcam compatible). I will be configuring the webcam for SightSpeed and some of the other tools recommended by readers in the comments to my Help Me Test Desktop Videoconferencing post, as soon as time permits.

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets 02/01/2005 10:09 PM

I had to go all the way over to LISNews< /a> to find out that a sister Library System here in Illinois has started a totally awesome project called Libraries Matter. Here at home, our kids saved up some money to buy the 10–pack of Lance Armstrong yellow wristbands because they’re all the rage at school. Can you imagine if we could start something similar with these blue ones for libraries? Brilliant job, Alliance Library System!

One thing, though – how about offering packs smaller than 50 so that ordinary folks like myself can buy some and give them out to friends, kids, etc.? Let’s get some grassroots support going, not just top down from the institutional level! Then, let’s think about how we can use these on Advocacy Day this year.

Tangent: When visiting the ALS web site tonight, I realized they’ve added blogs to the home page (kind of, sort of). Sweet! Unfortunately, no RSS feeds to be found anywhere, which means I won’t be able to add them to my aggregator, which means I’ll have to keep relying on other web sites to highlight ALS projects for me. Not sweet. C’mon, ALS, show us the RSS!

Well, it was a close call between the PalmOne Treo 600 and the Sony Ericsson P900, but I've gone with the Treo. The P900 has a much better Web browser, a better camera, better multitasking and in many ways a better user interface. But the Treo has a thumb-keyboard, which for me is essential, and zillions of Palm OS applications that run nicely and enhance the device.

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600?

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600? 01/08/2004 07:20 PM

There were lots of big announcements today but as far as I'm concerned, the biggest is Real's new software plus music store. Not for the music store itself, because after I download the first song for $.10 I don't envision locking my music up in AAC + Helix encrypted files, but because RealPlayer 10 brings with it a new Palm component. The line that specifically caught my eye is "support for over 50 portable music devices, including the iPOD and the Handspring Treo 600."

Naturally my fingers tripped over themselves to get to the Real site and download the software to my T600, but I couldn't find a download link for it anywhere. The key turns out to be this little phrase: "For the next 10 days, U.S. consumers who download RealPlayer 10 will be able to purchase their first track for only $0.10. Consumers can transfer tracks purchased in the RealPlayer Music Store to the Creative Zen Xtra as well as seven models of PalmOne devices, including most of the Tungsten models, the Zire 71, and the Treo 600."

I didn't realize I had to actually download the main player and create an account at the music store just to get the Palm piece that I want, but of course Real is going to make this as difficult as possible (I don't use Real anymore because it's become more and more annoying with each iteration). PDA 24/7 spelled it out in the following post:

"Email from Galley- 'As I write this, I am listening to Night Ranger's 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me' on my Zire 71. It is a 192Kbps DRM-enabled AAC file! RealPlayer 10 was released today, and it features a music store. Tracks are 99 cents, or $9.95 per album. All files are RealAudio 10 (192Kbps AAC), so the sound quality is very good. Persons who have signed up for a Music Store account can get version 1.5 of RealPlayer for PalmOS.' "

So despite my dislike for the software, I've been anxiously awaiting a new version of RealPlayer that would work with the T600 because I really, really, really want to be able to access Live365 streams. Even better, I'd like to finally be able to access Rhapsody on it, and I'm guessing this is the first step to making that a reality.

By the time I realized what I needed to do, I was home reading my aggregator for the night. Every day I carry my sync cable to work and back in order to keep my data and programs up-to-date at both home and work (yes, I need to buy a second charger/sync cable, but they all seem to be sold out). Naturally, I forgot my sync cable at work tonight, so I can't test this and install the Palm program. Argh - my kingdom for a sync cable!!

So until I have a chance to go through all of this myself, has anyone else installed the new RealPlayer 10 on a Treo 600? Can you do more than just listen to purchased Real music files in it? Can you hear live streams from other web sites? Enquiring minds want to know!

Still no Treo 600 for T-Mobile

Still no Treo 600 for T-Mobile 12/02/2003 04:53 PM
It's December already and T-Mobile still isn't carrying the Treo 600. Shedding some light on the matter is an email that reader Zachary Conine just recently received from their customer service:Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. We are currently experiencing some problems regarding synching the Treo 600 with our network which has delayed the release of this device. We hope to have these issues resolved in a timely matter and should be releasing this device sometime in December. So T-Mobile subscribers lusting after the Treo 600 are either going to have wait a little while longer, buy an unlocked Treo 600 and hope it works, or switch to another carrier....

Video to Go on the Treo 600??

Video to Go on the Treo 600?? 01/07/2004 04:53 PM

USER THOUGHT: Watching a TV program on a Palm device is fun.

"Watching a TV program on a Palm device is fun! I record a program up to 1 hour long on my Mac using EyeTV, I edit out the commercials with the same program. I then use Kinoma producer to convert the MPEG file to a .PDB file, and finally I transfer the file to a 256MB SD card using a card reader. The show can be viewed entirely with Kinoma player. This is great when I’m on the go, and want to see a show – or show someone else a show - while away from a TV. For me, this is the next best thing until an SD card/TV tuner is made. :-) " [Daily Palm]

Oh, suh-weet! I hadn't even thought of this! I could take shows I've recorded on my ReplayTV, download them to my PC, convert them to MPEG and then PDB, and watch them on my Treo 600! Is there anything this puppy can't do?? And the screen on it is bigger than the one on my Archos Jukebox, while negating the need to mess with multiple programs and formats just to get the video onto the device!

I feel a test case coming on this weekend....

Treo 600 Review

Treo 600 Review 01/05/2004 01:08 AM

I've finally gotten around to posting about my experiences with the Treo 600 in an essay called Life in the Treo Lane. The great thing about this device is that it confirms most of what I've been writing about for the last two years. I am truly shifted now!

Of course, this has brought home to me even more how woefully lacking library services are in a shifted environment, and I'll be doing a second write-up of how they look on the Treo. In fact, I'm thinking of submitting it as a presentation at the ILA Conference this fall because too few librarians have actually seen how their services look on a smartphone, and this is one way I could show them, even taking URLs from the audience. See, I could do that at ILA because I wouldn't have to rely on the conference center for internet access! (Assuming I can get a strong enough signal in the conference room....)

I've also updated the list of What's on My Treo 600, and I'm pretty close to maxxing out the memory on it, both internal and external. Hopefully I'll get a 256MB SD card for my birthday....  ;-)

Treo Ace: Please Be Legit

Treo Ace: Please Be Legit 06/25/2004 10:32 AM

treo_ace.jpg imageSo I've been waiting to get some additional confirmation, but as nothing else is panning out, there's no need to hold back the news. TreoCentral has a boatload of information about a very-legit looking Treo 610, which they are calling the "Treo Ace." The short list is very appealing: slightly smaller form factor, 320 by 320 screen, working Bluetooth, context-sensitive "soft buttons," more phone-like red/end, green/send buttons, a 312MHz processor, and a 1.3-megapixel camera, all running on top of Palm OS 5.4 (Garnet). Which is to say, yes, we are aroused in a humorous but unoffensive to sensitive readers way. Making it sound even more legitimate is the mention that the new Treo will have only 32MB of RAM, an egregious shortcoming that most tricksters would be too hesitant to pepper their fake with, even if it does season it with some needful reality. Anyway, hot.

Treo woes 04/09/2004 04:03 PM
My beloved Treo 600 is suddenly on the fritz.  It makes and receives calls, but whenever I turn it off and on, it locks in the keyguard mode.  Shutting off keyguard didn't help, nor did soft and hard resets.  This is something serious.  Time to call the equipment replacement program, which fortunately I signed up for.

Sidekick Vs. Treo 600

Sidekick Vs. Treo 600 07/30/2004 09:56 AM

I'm a fan of both the Sidekick and the Treo 600, so when Levi Wallach wrote to tell me about his in-depth comparison article featuring the two keyboarded messenger devices, I immediately did what any sane person would do and read it and then forgot to post about it. Fortunately for you, that was only like last week, and the information is no less pertinent. In fact, with the Sidekick II and the Treo Ace/610 just around the corner, bargain-minded shoppers would do well to pay extra attention to the two devices that are still plenty capable and about to get plenty cheap.

OMFG Worst. Trip. Ever. I'm at CES finally, though, and have big, big stuff to talk about. Expect short, bursty posts—not because I don't want to dazzle you with my dick jokes, but because there's just so much to cover, both CES and not.

Here's a little blurp: Cingular's rebate form for the Treo 600 has a check box for the Treo 650 even though it expires January 31st. If that doesn't mean it's going to be out that month, they mean it's going to be out real soon now.
