The Cloud Allows SIM Authentication

The Cloud Allows SIM Authentication

The Cloud Allows SIM Authentication 05/04/2004 02:03 PM

The Cloud customers can now get authenticated using SIM cards: Transat Technologies enables the service. SIM-based authentication is already being used by some hotspots in Europe and is expected to be a widely used authentication method there. Because Europeans use GSM for their cell phone technologies, they are already used to the concept of the SIM card. They can use the same SIM card for their cell phones and for hotspot authentication, which also means they could receive a single bill for both services. Some of the early SIM-based WLAN authentication solutions are pretty rudimentary. They involve the user sending a message from their cell phone to get a code that allows them to access the WLAN. But the more sophisticated solutions include a SIM card reader on a laptop. The SIM card authenticates the user but also applies encryption and security to the communication between the client and the network. That is likely the offering Transat is delivering for The Cloud. At the CTIA Wireless I.T. show last fall I talked to a handful of companies that are touting SIM-based authentication tools, including some of the big SIM card makers. While they're looking for a U.S. market, most weren't terribly bullish that the authentication method would take off here because people aren't widely used to the concept of using SIM cards. Even GSM users in the U.S. don't often realize that they have a SIM card....

Chicago's Cloud Gate 08/02/2004 10:33 AM
beanCloud Gate is Anish Kapoor's recently unveiled artwork in Chicago's Millennium Park. The surreal sculpture has caused quite a stir and the media are pissing off Kapoor by nicknaming it "The Bean." Former BB guestblogger Jenn Shreve sent along links to architectural writer Lynn Becker's photo essay of The Bean Cloud Gate under construction, an image gallery of the completed work, and a Webcam site. Jenn says:
"Cloud Gate combines the blobular, organic shapes that have been so prevalent in recent design with the reflective surfaces common to Gehry's architectural work and turns the idea of sculpture  as something to be *looked at* on its ear, transforming the very looking into an experiential, interactive encounter--all within the public sphere. Plus it looks like an alien just layed a mega egg in the middle of the city, which you gotta love."

Cringely Builds Cloud Castles

Cringely Builds Cloud Castles 01/10/2004 03:53 AM
There's nothing wrong with this Robert X. Cringely column that a little expertise and knowledge couldn't solve: A little background on why I'm spending so many words to tear this essay apart. It's not that I'm opposed to the premise or some thought experiments. It's that it's so horribly uninformed. Cringely is a well-known fellow in the industry who has written and produced videos about the business side of the Internet. Cringely is a nom de plume, but it's how the fellow appears to want to be known. He writes a regularly column on PBS's site and whenever one appears, it's quoted and linked to all over the Net. So it's my duty, unfortunately, to explain how bad this one is. (This is the same Cringely who stated two years ago that he was using a passive repeater to obtain Wi-Fi service to his hill-top home in a manner that community wireless folks said was impossible. He promised to provide details and never did, although a personal tragedy was part of that.) In the first part of the article, he completely botches explaining the hotspot industry in comprehensible terms. He calls several different categories of business aggregators, and completely ignores a whole other set of trends. It's not important that one adopt the cant of an industry, but when well-defined and well-used terms exist, you could use them or invent equally good distinctions if you must. He does neither. A hotspot operator or wireless ISP installs hotspot infrastructure and manages the network, offering a revenue split and other incentives to real-estate venues to allow the hotspot to be set up; or a real-estate venue may contract with a WISP to have hotspot service installed. Wayport is the categorical WISP at this point, a practically pure play in this space. They contract with venues, install hardware, handle billing, and work with end users. T-Mobile HotSpot is also a WISP in its current model. Infrastructure builders contract with real-estate venues to install hotspot service that they resell to hotspot aggregators. Cometa and Concourse Communications are infrastructure builders. They typically create vendor-neutral installations in which many operators and aggregators can pay for access for their downstream customers. Aggregators resell access to other networks, typically handling the billing and authentication negotiation. Boingo Wireless and iPass are aggregators. Most of the cell companies are also aggregators, reselling access to a number of WISP networks, but...

Linksys Posts Beta Firmware to Correct
Remote Admin Problem
06/04/2004 02:13 PM
Linksys has posted beta firmware for its WRT54G that closes a potential remote access hole in its security: The initial report indicated that remote administration of the WRT54G was possible out of the box. The consultant who reported the problem checked other WRT54Gs: if firewall protection is turned on (Linksys says this is the default and users confirm), then the remote issue is non-existent. However, some of the units that the consultant purchased to test had firewall service turned off out of the box. A Linksys spokesperson said that this release is labeled beta because other functionality changes are in progress and not yet finalized. Linksys' official statement reads, "For those rare few that do disable the firewall and turn off remote admin on their WRT54G, Linksys advises those users to download the latest beta firmware which is posted on the Linksys website." I just purchased a WRT54G to test out its default configuration, and I can confirm that I received a unit with firmware v2.02.2 (which predates the 2.02.7 March 2004 release), and that its firewall service enabled....

Amazon.com is offering the Linksys WPC54G for $66.49 with a $10 rebate direct from Linksys; Dell has it for even less: I don't like to highlight deals, but this is quite a bargain. The Linksys WPC54G is one of the bestselling cards for 802.11g under Windows -- and Mac. (That's right: if you're a Mac user with Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later and AirPort 3.1 or later, you can insert this Linksys card to get 802.11g even if you can't handle AirPort Extreme.) Follow the graphical link at right and add the card to your Amazon.com shopping basket to see the price. There's a link to a downloadable $10 rebate coupon. You can even use Amazon's super saver shipping and pay $0 for delivery in the U.S. I checked out Dell's price on this, and they list the card at $63.95, but my account is a Home account, and they gave me 10 percent off for no good reason and free shipping because it was over $49. I'm not sure if everyone will see the same price, but the net is $57.56 without having to send in a rebate form. You can compare prices for more stores for this item at Shopper.com....

Linksys Boosts Signal--Legally

Linksys Boosts Signal--Legally 07/07/2004 12:55 PM
Linksys releases legal antenna add-ons for several of its Wi-Fi gateways: We've said it in this space before, and we'll say it again: in the U.S., you cannot legally mix and match antennas with Wi-Fi gateways. The FCC's Part 15 rules require that you only use antennas that were certified with the gateway that they were designed for. In response to a recent query made by a colleague of mine, the FCC wrote back a very clear response: When using Part 15 (2.4GHz) devices, mixing and matching components is a violation of the rules. Only systems can be certified. Please see http://wireless.fcc.gov/outreach/2004broadbandforum/comments/ YDI_externalamps.pdf. There you go. Oddly, it is perfectly legal to sell antennas separately from gateways without violating any laws. It's only deploying them that is technically illegal. We haven't heard of any letters or prosecutions, however. Linksys isn't getting around this, but has rather taken several antennas and several gateways and paid the fees to get each of the combinations certified in a matrix. This cost them at least a few hundred thousand dollars in fees and associated expenses entirely separate from the development costs of the antennas themselves. Linksys has two kinds of antennas and matching stands for each. One add-on, the TNC Connector Antenna, is designed for two-antenna systems: WRT54GS, WRT54G, WAP54G, BEFW11S4, and WAP11. The one-antenna device, the SMA Connector Antenna, works with more specialized equipment: WRV54G, WMP54GS, WMP54G, and WET54G. Both antenna types cost $60 each (suggested retail), while the respective antenna stands are another $30. The stands allow mounting the antennas to a wall or ceiling....

Linksys High-Gain Antennas 07/08/2004 08:44 AM

linksys_tnc_antenna.jpg image

Linksys has announced a new line of high-gain antennas to be used with some of its more popular Wireless-B (802.11b) and Wireless-G (802.11g) wireless networking products. And get this -- no drivers needed. I know! Unfortunately, for all the talk of what connectors go with what products, they neglect to mention what dBi rating (signal gain) the antennas have. For $60 a pop, plus another $30 if you get the fancy stand, my guess is your can probably pick up something just as powerful or more from somebody like Fab Corp, although you'd be missing out on the matching blue and black Linksys plastic. (Thanks, Josh!)

Update: As Ian Anderson pointed out to me, it says its 7 dBi right on the damn image. I blame the liberal media.
