VeriSign to Relaunch Loathed SiteFinder
VeriSign to Relaunch Loathed SiteFinder
02/10/2004 02:40 AMWashington Post:
VeriSign Reconsiders Search Service.
The problem,
critics have said, is that given VeriSign's role as the operator of
the dot-com and dot-net registries, the Site Finder service causes
repercussions throughout the Internet. VeriSign tells computers,
wireless phones and other products that use the Internet where they
can find dot-com and dot-net addresses -- and when an address does not
exist. Redirecting incorrect Web site queries would force
technologists to reconfigure hundreds of programs and devices to be
compatible with Site Finder.

Alcor life extension site relaunch
Alcor life extension site relaunch
02/01/2005 08:37 PM
Mark Frauenfelder:
My friend, Charles Platt, told me to check out the relaunch of Alcor's
site. Alcor, as you may know, is a life extension foundation. When an
Alcor member dies, his or her body is stored in tanks of liquid
nitrogen in the hopes that future technology will be able to revive
them (the foundation currently has 67 patients in "cryostasis"). The
big advance in cryopreservation is ice-free preservation
(vitrification), which greatly reduces cellular damage that freezing
causes.
Myth 2: Cryonics freezes people.
The current technology favored by Alcor is vitrification, not
freezing. Vitrification is an ice-free process in which more than 60%
of the water inside cells is replaced with protective chemicals. This
completely prevents freezing during deep cooling. Instead of freezing,
molecules just move slower and slower until all chemistry stops at the
glass transition temperature (approximately -124°C). Unlike
freezing, there is no ice formation or ice damage in vitrified tissue.
Blood vessels have been reversibly vitrified, and whole kidneys have
been recovered and successfully transplanted after cooling to
-45°C while protected with vitrification chemicals.
Left: A rabbit kidney suspended in a transparent solution of
vitrification chemicals, but without vitrification solution inside it,
is frozen solid at a temperature of -140°C.
Right: Another kidney with vitrification solution inside it is
preserved without freezing at the same temperature of
-140°C.

eMusic relaunch: new features, editorial
content
09/22/2004 02:19 AM
Online music provider eMusic announced on Tuesday a relaunch of its
Web site that features new editorial content and search tools. The
service launched in 1998 and currently sells over 1,000,000 MP3
downloads per month, with more than 500,000 songs available in a wide
variety of genres. Its new roster of editors and writers, who help
guide users toward the type of music they like, was culled from
well-known newspapers and magazines while such added features as "Tell
a Friend" and "Neighbors" expand the site's browsing options with the
ability to e-mail information about tracks to friends and the chance
to create a profile and connect with others who share similar
interests.

ipodsdirtysecret.com's dirty secret
12/02/2003 01:43 AMThe guy who donated bandwidth to
ipodsdirtysecret.com (about two
brothers who spraypainted complaints about lousy batteries on iPod
posters) is pissed a plenty:
"Jesus, I cannot BELIEVE you guys. In good faith, I put the video back
on the basis of the email you sent me, hoping that at least some
people would click on the mirror link at at least get the truth, and
information about how to replace the battery. Instead, you removed the
mirror link entirely, used the bandwidth and resources that I was
providing you exclusively on your front page, AGAIN without providing
ANY information whatsoever about how users can solve this problem, or
the fact that Apple now has an official $99 battery replacement, and
on top of it all, put ThruPort's banner on the front page! I've now
served 91,629 downloads for you, for over 0.6 terabytes of data
transfer. What the f*** is you guys' problem? I guess that fact that
you are liars shouldn't surprise me, since that's exactly what your
whole site and the video is. Have fun with it, and whatever f***ed up
satisfaction you get from having as many people as possible see your
video, and not even wanting to tell people that there is a solution."

Nerve.com's "Future of Marriage" survey
Nerve.com's "Future of Marriage" survey
06/07/2004 11:37 PMTomorrow, "Literate Smut" online magazine Nerve launches a two-week
"Future of Marriage" special issue. Included: the results of a "future
of marriage poll" which canvassed 2082 readers for some interesting
trend data and pithy quotes ("A good marriage needs blow jobs."...
"Have failed at it three times, but I am in love once again, so I
still have hope." ... "Would rather not die alone.")
New trends among our readers (primarily educated urban men and women
in their twenties and thirties): 32%, for example, think cheating
begins with a raunchy IM session. Fidelity is a priority for them
(close to 80% are pro-monogamy), but they're laissez-faire about the
lifestyles of others (97% think having children out of wedlock is
okay). There's just one thing on which they refuse to compromise: 59%
think bad sex is grounds for divorce.

Blogger.com's updated Atom Protocol
support
03/14/2005 04:47 PM I'm supposed to be wrapping up Blogs,
Wikis, and Feeds In Action, Chapter 14 (Blog Your Build Process)
today, but instead I've been experimenting with Blogger.com's
updated support for the Atom Protocol (via Robert
Sarye). Looks like they have changed at least a couple of things
since the last time I tried it:
-
WSSE authentication is gone, replaced by BASIC HTTP authentication
over HTTPS
-
Individual entries are now returned as <entry> documents
rather than a <feed> wrapping an entry
I haven't updated Roller
or BlogClient'
s Atom support to match.
I think I'll wait until the Atom Protocol list arrives at consensus on
collection handling.
