Layla, P900 Upgrade: Rumor No More

Layla, P900 Upgrade: Rumor No More

Layla, P900 Upgrade: Rumor No More 05/04/2004 01:58 PM

We've gotten a hold of the internal documents from Sony Ericsson that move the P900 upgrade (codename: Layla) from vapor to confirmed. It's clear from the information that the Layla isn't finalized, and to expect some changes as the "ergonomics [are] being evaluated." Even better, the Tri-band phone is tweaked...

It doesn't get much more speculative than this post on Mobileburn about an upgrade for Sony Ericsson's P900 (code-named: Layla), but if their sources hold, it looks like the upgraded version will include a new flip-out QWERTY keyboard on the inside (as opposed to just the outside), as well as...

Upgrade Details
04/14/2005 10:03 AM

logo-apple.jpgThinkSecret is reporting the supposed details of Apple's Power Mac, iMac, and eMac upgrades, presumed to be officially unveiled by the company at the upcoming NAB conference. There's nothing terribly mind-blowing, mostly because there is still no confirmation as to whether the top-end Power Mac G5s (with speeds up to 2.7GHz) will have a dual-core version of the 970 processor or not.

It also appears that rumors of a Blu-ray compatible SuperDrive were pie-in-the-sky, although the rumors say dual-layer DVD+R support is likely. Everything else sounds extremely reasonable, with modest performance bumps across the line.

se_910_layla.jpg imageThere's not much to go on at the moment, but one of the Mobile9 forum users posted some purported images of the upcoming Sony Ericsson refresh, the P910. After all the hub bub surrounding the original leaked 'Layla' information, I don't think it's going out on a limb too much to say that these are probably legit -- or the work of a very talented hoaxer. With Sony pulling out of the PDA market (everywhere but Japan), it's reasonable to expect them to start pushing cellular handset upgrades through faster and faster. Of course, that would imply that one organization inside of Sony knows what the other is doing, which is sort of ridiculous, right? Tons more images on Mobile9, if you need more convincing.

The Inquirer is reporting that some problems have arisen with Sony Ericssons' new P900 smartphone and that they're so bad that cellular carrier Orange has recalled the first shipments made in the UK. Of course, they don't specify what those problems might be, only that a "usually reliable source" had indicated that something was wrong. Read UPDATE: Sony Ericsson is denying that there is any problem, and The Inquirer is now admitting that their source could have "confused the P900 with the SX1" from Siemens, which still isn't out yet. Apparently, this is a leaked pic of the successor to the Sony Ericsson P900 (the phone I plan on getting as soon as my first bank-statement appears and I use it to authenticate myself to the dumbass phone company that thinks bank-statements are better ID than Canadian passports). Call it the P901, or the P1000, whatever: it's got a wee keyboard on the flip-down for those who prefer thumbing out their executive haiku to scratching at a recalcitrant handwriting-recognition system. It looks like it might be a photoshop job, but Rojas at Engadget says that MobileBurn, the source, is reliable, and I'll take his word for it. Link (via Engadget)

There is word afoot that SP-2 does something we wouldn’t like. Although Microsoft insists that it’s a security measure, SP-2 is said to limit the number of TCP/IP open connections. Not a serious issue, you think? Well, think again. How do you suppose all those programs that work to accelerate your downloads do their magic? Yep- they open multiple TCP/IP pipes to one or more Internet locations and download your files in what seems like…
