Badge of Shame

Badge of Shame 01/22/2004 03:21 PM

Dave Hyatt is adding obtrusive XML error reporting to Safari (screenshot) which jives with the approach I suggested in Biased Liberal.  While at it, he came up with the perfect term for the negative UI bias I mentioned: Badge of Shame.  Thanks Dave.

siemens_badge.jpgSiemens has developed a sweet little wearable, Bluetooth-based badge that lets you speak commands to control your house, talk to others in your house and accept and conduct phone calls. For all intents and purposes, lest any of you be confused, this is life imitating art in the finest sense. The system can recognize 30,000 words once you press the button on the badge to activate it. I'd give it no more than 10 years before this sort of technology trickles down into the middle class, but I hope to see it sooner than that. Now, if only the system would give feedback in Majel Roddenberry's voice...

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group
bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall” – congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.

Also note that over night we've received two emails from Wal-Mart employees whom claim they're prices are even lower than originally anticipated, one for $34.97 and one for $37.88! So be sure to check your local Wal-Mart as prices may vary across the nation. If you find a good deal today, be sure to let us know!

It has been done. I put in the request today to have my DNS entries changed over to my new host. So, there may be some intermittent problems while all of that goes through, but everything should be golden within a few days. If you definately-without-fail need to get me an email in the next few days I would recommend you send it to an alternate address.

when do we finally say

when do we finally say 01/06/2005 10:35 PM
The Reality of Red-State Fascism, by Lew Rockwell. We consistently say "Man, we're on the road to fascism" yet people fall all over themselves to say "We're nowhere near it.". Well, when do we say "Holy shit...we're there"? Everybody's favorite libertarian gives us a timeline of the descent, and lets us know how we are now not just on the brink, but in the midst of Americanized Fascism:

"If you follow hate-filled sites such as Free Republic, you know that the populist right in this country has been advocating nuclear holocaust and mass bloodshed for more than a year now. The militarism and nationalism dwarfs anything I saw at any point during the Cold War. It celebrates the shedding of blood, and exhibits a maniacal love of the state...In 1994, the central state was seen by the bourgeoisie as the main threat to the family; in 2004 it is seen as the main tool for keeping the family together and ensuring its ascendancy. In 1994, the state was seen as the enemy of education; today, the same people view the state as the means of raising standards and purging education of its left-wing influences....it sees the state as the central organizing principle of society, views public institutions as the most essential means by which all these institutions are protected and advanced, and adores the head of state as a godlike figure who knows better than anyone else what the country and world's needs"

USB On-the-Go Finally Is a Go

USB On-the-Go Finally Is a Go 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

USB On-the-Go, an addition to the USB standard that would allow two non-PC devices to communicate with each other, is, after four long years of promises, finally seeing some life. This will allow for file transfers in the wild, far away from interceding PCs or Macs. This also means that piracy is SO much easier now and that folks will be swapping files and media like promiscuous MP3 nymphos.

There were a few devices at Computex that are currently using OTG including BTC's SG106 6GB MP3 which allows for instant file transfers between two devices.

By mitch@osafoundation.org

I thought readers might enjoy a window into how our development process has evolved. Running the overall development efficiently has always been one of the challenges at OSAF. Finally - there's justice 03/06/2004 01:50 AM

The only thing more irritating then getting throw in Orkut jail 8 times, is that Joi (who's right on my heels as the #2 Orkut networker) - had NEVER been thrown into jail.

Well it's great to hear that there's justice in the world.

:-)

I' m in Orkut jail.

I was making fun of Marc Canter because he kept on ending up in Orkut jail, but I got this message today when I tried to invite a friend into Orkut.

To keep orkut.com a trusted community, we have implemented an automated system that tries to identify members who may be abusing it. While your account is being reviewed, you will still be able to login, but the system will prevent you from performing any actions such as inviting friends or posting messages.

If your account has been flagged by mistake, we're very sorry. Certain actions can trigger our alarm by accident. If you think you have been mistakenly suspended, please send an email to help+blocked@orkut.com with your username, and we'll review your account as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I haven't invited very many people and have only sent three private messages. I wonder what the triggers are. Maybe approving too many friend request. Hmm...
