Backside of the GUI
Backside of the GUI
09/16/2004 03:26 PM
We can't see the backside of the Moon, only photos. Likewise,
we never see the
backside of GUI objects. Not only do we not see it, we don't
expect it to be
there like we do with the Moon.
As a kid, I had a moment of enlightenment of sort when I saw my
father open up a gadget
(I forget what) with a screwdriver. From that point on, I had
the urge to open
things up to see what's inside. Usually screws that hold
gadgets together were
in the back or on the side. So the bit of knowledge I added
to my model of the
world then was that the front of a gadget was for controls and the
back was for opening
it up.
That bit of knowledge didn't apply to GUI objects. To open up
a gadget onscreen,
you have to browse the menus to find the settings or preference
command because there
is no backside to GUI objects.
Backside is a lost word in the language of GUI design.
Now we can google, but we still can't flip or turn.

Jewel of a Day
11/10/2003 11:38 PMWhat's been happening in my little world? Everything. I don't mind
being cryptic when I want to be, but right now I have to be. Change
has been in the air, and this past week has been quite a revolutionary
one - further punctuated by a fantastic meeting this morning with
Veronica and friends. All will be shared when the air is completely
devoid of any dangerous particles, so keep your duct tape handy for
now. Funny how weeks can seem like years, hours like days, seconds
like eons. Don't sit on the edge of your seat for too long or your ass
will fall asleep....

eMachine Shop
eMachine Shop
08/27/2004 01:33 PMDesigning something in two dimensions and printing it out has
always been a fairly easy task, and recently getting something
"imaged" in three dimensions has become reality. But only if you don't
care how durable that something ends up being.
Now there is a better alternative; eMachine Shop will do it for
you. Download and use their free software to draw your design (or
import a dxf file from a CAD drawing), it will tell you if your doodad
can be made or not, then it will give you a cost estimate for the
work. You then send your drawing to eMachine Shop, and they will build
it and ship it out to you.
They do injection molding, milling, turning, laser cutting,
waterjet cutting, wire EDM, tapping, bending, blanking, punching,
plastic extrusion, and thermoforming. Turnaround time is generally
about 30 days; considering the fact that it's one-off work, that's not
unreasonable. The cost is pretty reasonable too. An article on cnews listed 10 brass doorknobs custom milled
for about $150. That includings labor.

3D Chop Shop
3D Chop Shop
07/05/2004 12:43 PMSo I'm Googleing around looking for info on building a bike rack
for my garage to keep my kids from making a parked bicycle maze, and I
stumble upon this: 3D Chop Shop.
Virtual Cycles' 3D Chop Shop is interactive software that allows you
to build and customize your dream motorcycle. In complete and
realistic 3D, Chop Shop gives you the power to change parts,
accessories, and paint colors right on your PC.
Whether you are searching for that perfect part or paint job and
need a tool for visualizing your creation...or you simply want to be
creative and design cool bikes you can print and share with others, 3d
Chop Shop is perfect for you.
The rendered motorcycle drawings produced by 3DCS look pretty
realistic, but I couldn't find any 3D renderings on their site.
So far only a PC version is available, but they are working on a
Mac port of it. $49.95.
The funny thing is that my oldest son and I were talking just
yesterday about how fun it would be to have something like this to
customize cars (he and his buddy watched 2 Fast 2 Furious the
night before.) He goes nuts over the tricked out rice burners, but at
14 there's no way he's going to even touch a real car until his
hormones slow down. Like maybe 20 or 25. Doing something in software
though might be a good outlet for him!
