05/03/2004 12:11 PMOrangeWare offers $15 driver to Mac users to pick up extra speed: We
here at Wi-Fi Networking News remain dubious about the efficacy of
Atheros's Turbo mode, which bonds two Wi-Fi channels and has been
shown in some studies to cause interference. Atheros continues to
assert there is no interference. In either case, Mac users now have
access to many more options for wireless networking through the
OrangeWare driver, which can support a/g cards that use Atheros chips,
including the Super G features, which include compression and frame
bursting, among other non-radio-frequency improvements in speed among
similar devices. A free trial version is available for download. The
driver lists support for a couple dozen cards (PC Cards and PCI cards)
and works with Mac OS X 10.2 or later. These cards are typically less
than $50 or even as low as $30, while an internal AirPort Extreme
Card--if available for a given model--is $100. The driver only shows
WEP, not WPA support....

01/26/2004 08:59 AMUntil recently, Mac users haven't been able to connect to AirPort
access points with CardBus- and PCI-based third party wireless cards,
but when Apple released its AirPort 3.1 drivers, support opened for
some third-party cards based on Broadcomm technology. Now
OrangeWare has expanded that
support to include Atheros-based products as well.

AT&T Wireless Offers 3G in Dallas and
San Diego
09/01/2004 09:52 AMAT&T Wireless said it is offering its 3G network in Dallas and San
Diego: San Diego should be a particularly interesting market as it
will be the first in the country to have competing 3G
services--Verizon Wireless already has its EV-DO network live there.
It will also be interesting to watch if the two networks seem to have
any affect on Wi-Fi usage. On a side note, AT&T Wireless cleverly uses
the term "metropolitan hotspot" to describe the service in the two
markets. That term is usually used to describe the stringing together
of Wi-Fi hotspots to cover a large region or by WiMax-like
technologies that aim to blanket a city. It's really a stretch to
compare the AT&T Wireless service to Wi-Fi. AT&T Wireless says its
network offers 220 kbps to 320 kbps, with bursts up to 384 kbps, while
even 802.11b, depending on how many people are sharing a network,
usually can deliver multiple megabits of throughput....

Airgo Has Manufacturers for Its MIMO
Airgo Has Manufacturers for Its MIMO
06/11/2004 08:38 PMAirgo will be the first company to the hit the market with
multiple-in, multiple-out wireless systems for consumers: The MIMO
approach has started to achieve traction, with it likely being the
basis for 802.11n, a high-throughput IEEE standard in progres. When
you build antennas and wireless access points, you can increase signal
strength, decrease noise inside the chips, or improve antennas--or all
three, among other technqiues. By integrating the signal from several
antennas, MIMO effectively increases the range through better
receptivity and interpretation. It's all interrelated. While Airgo has
received plenty of press, so did Vivato and Etherlinx, both of which
firms have had rocky roads on their way to production units which
didn't seem to live up to early expectations. Airgo, however, has
continued to pursue its same initial goals, and products will start
appearing through distributor and manufacturing partners in July,
according to the News.com article. In an interview in April with CEO
Greg Raleigh, he told Wi-Fi Networking News that consumer products
based on Airgo's first generation might cost a bit more--possibly $50
more for an access point--but offer such a greater range even in the
Wi-Fi bands that a user might need a single access points instead of
two or three, a common problem for even moderately large or old homes.
Raleigh also said that while their current generation of product
handles 802.11g and its own 100+ Mbps proprietary flavor, he expects
the next generation to offer multiples of that speed. Airgo's 100+
Mbps offering has a net throughput of 45 Mbps, he said....

Linksys Uses Airgo MIMO in New Product
01/04/2005 02:27 AM Linksys adds Airgo's MIMO technology in their WRT54GX: The new
product isn't be advertised as pre-802.11n, as Belkin's version is,
but it does claim it can achieve as much as three times the range and
eight times the throughput. Belkin's package of Airgo technology has
gotten fairly positive reviews from many sources that like the
performance that the router provides for non-MIMO cards. The one major
exception is from David Haskin, editor-in-chief of Mobile Pipeline,
who found erratic performance, especially in using the PC Card in
non-pre-N environments. [link via Reuters]...

Belkin to Offer Airgo Wireless Products
Belkin to Offer Airgo Wireless Products
08/09/2004 09:46 AM
Belkin has signed
on with wireless vendor Airgo to release new products based on the
MIMO wireless technology, a longer-range "multiple in, multiple out"
radio system that is compatible with existing Wi-Fi standards (b and g
in this case) but can reach speeds of up to 108-megabits per second
(compared to 802.11g's 54-mbit rates).
The Belkin products, a MIMO router and a client card, will be the
first to officially adopt the MIMO technology, which is in the running
to become the next official Wi-Fi standard (Intel is sponsoring its
main competitor).
Some companies did the same thing with 802.11g, jumping on board
before the standard was officially announced. Remember the other
standards? No, me neither.

This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE)
network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices
like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local
device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
A bugfix makes the driver record the new MAC address when a new
EtherDrive blade is inserted into the same shelf and slot from which a
previous blade has been removed. The firmware version of each aoe
device is now visible through a "fwver" file in sysfs.

ATI readies big Linux driver push
09/24/2004 01:37 PMATI IS here in Cyprus to outline its recently announced X700 and
Catalyst drivers.
Terry Makedon, a senior product manager, largely talked about those,
but he did say the firm is readying a major push in the next few weeks
to outline its plans for Linux driver support. He said that ATI has
three main goals for Linux. He said that ATI supports Linux which
represents around four per cent of the market, and that the firm’s
Linux efforts are proportional to the market.
He said that ATI had rebuilt its Linux driver team with a lot of new
developers. He said ATI will improve its test process including
automated test methodologies, lots of new ways of testing more
efficiently. He said ATI’s priority was to make PCIe Linux drivers
ready as well as provide support for AMD64.
