07/14/2004 05:17 AM

A new coalition made up of big name technology companies IBM, Intel, Sony, Microsoft, Warner Bros., Disney and Panasonic have vowed to stop consumers from being able to record HDTV in the privacy of our own homes. Their is already legislation to lock out your Digital Video recorders starting July 1st through embedded chips. standard
01/03/2005 08:01 PM
An agreement to develop an advanced mobile phone standard capable of sending high-resolution video in an instant has been reached between leading wireless carriers and telecoms equipment makers. CNN reports that a group of 26 companies, including Britain's Vodafone Group Plc, Germany's Siemens AG, France's Alcatel and Japan's NEC Corp. and DoCoMo, will support the standard. Mobile phone services based on the technology will offer transmission speeds more than 10 times as fast as the current third-generation (3G) service. Basic technological specifications will be compiled by 2007 but no date has been set for a commercial launch, a DoCoMo spokesman said.

06/09/2004 04:35 AM
Bridging the distance between the Hollywood film industry and the best new screenwriters across the country, the Nashville Screenwriters Conference announces its first National Screenplay Showdown. After six years of presenting the best writers and filmmakers in the entertainment industry at the Nashville Screenwriters Conference, the organization has teamed up with Ed Rugoff from the prestigious Chesterfield Writer’s Film Project to give aspiring screenwriters an opportunity to take their work west – all the way to Hollywood. The Showdown evaluates screenplays solely on the basis of story-telling ability, meaning that all genres have the same chance of winning. The winning screenplay writers will find themselves in front of the most prestigious literary agencies and management companies in consideration for representation. [PRWEB Jun 9, 2004]

Arrested For Recording Movies

Arrested For Recording Movies 04/15/2004 01:02 PM
Late last year there was a lot of talk about a new California law that completely banned bringing any kind of video camera into a theater, even if you weren't using it. As many people pointed out, this seemed to go too far - as just carrying a video camera (especially a camera phone) doesn't mean you're doing anything illegal with it. Well, the law went forward and now the first two arrests have been made - in both cases traditional situations where people in the audience were caught trying to record the film on camcorders. While the actions described clearly are illegal, it still seems like this law goes too far. In other related news, the article mentions the sentencing of the guy accused of putting screener tapes online - saying that his sentencing has been delayed six months so the studios can "calculate the losses incurred." It's going to take six months to calculate the losses? Expect the losses to be nowhere near reality, as they'll assume that every potential download was a "lost sale," when that's clearly not true. It's likely that many of the big fans of those movies went and saw it in the theater anyway, and others never would have paid to see the movie anyway. In fact, there's a chance that the download enticed some people to go see the films in the theaters. But, of course, don't expect Hollywood to take into account any of those things.

Whether you do or not, it's been hard to escape the Jamie propaganda machine at my university for the last couple weeks: signs, buttons, toques, shirts, a website, and probably more. As it turns out, Jamie's just one of many interchangeable spokespeople for the cause, apparently with quite a bit of cash behind them. Google reveals it's a continent-wide phenomenon. If you do agree, perhaps you'll want to o rganize an event yourself. I wonder if the campaign has made any converts yet...
