Nature-Inspired Computing
02/17/2004 08:01 AMNature-Inspired Computinghttp://www
.computer.org/intelligent/ex2004/x1002.pdf Nature-Inspired Computing - Increased understanding of biological
systems will lead to breakthroughs in computing and artificial
intelligence. By Nigel Shadbolt. IEEE Intelligent Systems. "It isn't
hard to recognize the influence of biological processes and methods on
our science and technologies. Norbert Wiener's cybernetics was very
much influenced by feedback and control processes that he observed in
biological systems. Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts'
characterization of the neuron owed much to their understanding of
biology, mathematics, and electronics. In artificial intelligence and
intelligent systems, we've also kept the faith with living systems
even when not aiming to build exact simulations. AI and IS have been
fundamentally interested in the phenomenology of living systems -
perception, decision making, action, and learning. So we might say
that we've been doing nature-inspired computing all along."

The Nature of Meaning in the Age of
Google
04/16/2004 06:20 AMThe Nature of Meaning in the Age of Google by Terrence A.
Brooks http://information
r.net/ir/9-3/paper180.htmlAbstract By
Author:The culture of lay indexing has been created by
the aggregation strategy employed by Web search engines such as
Google. Meaning is constructed in this culture by harvesting semantic
content from Web pages and using hyperlinks as a plebiscite for the
most important Web pages. The characteristic tension of the culture of
lay indexing is between genuine information and spam. Google's success
requires maintaining the secrecy of its parsing algorithm despite the
efforts of Web authors to gain advantage over the Googlebot. Legacy
methods of asserting meaning such as the META keywords tag and Dublin
Core are inappropriate in the lawless meaning space of the open Web. A
writing guide is urged as a necessary aid for Web authors who must
balance enhancing expression versus the use of technologies that limit
the aggregation of their work.
The Changing Nature Of Radio
The Changing Nature Of Radio
04/18/2005 04:16 AMIt's no secret that what we once thought of as "radio" is changing
drastically. Already, there are things like satellite radio and
digital radio -- and there are those who consider file sharing,
podcasts and music players like iPod as "the next generation of
radio." Two more examples are about to hit the market, suggesting
that this next generation for radio is also getting fairly crowded.
First will be
Motorola's new
iRadio service, which we saw launched at DEMO in February (for the
first time -- apparently this second launch is... um... just 'cause).
The idea is to have the mobile phone be the core of the audio
experience. You can download audio files directly to the phone, and
then either listen to them directly off the phone, or use Bluetooth to
stream the songs through your car stereo or home stereo. It's a neat
idea, but it'll be a few years before it gets anywhere near
realistic/useful. How many people actually have Bluetooth enabled car
stereos or home stereos? Yes, Motorola will offer an adapter, but you
also need to buy their special phone, which doesn't really seem to
hold that much data -- so it all seems a bit limited. Then, you've
got the
launch of visual radio, which
is basically just trying to update existing FM radio with things like
song information and album art. It seems like a fairly weak attempt
at updating radio in the face of a lot of competition, but it's hard
to see it having much of an impact, considering the competition should
be able to keep doing much, much more.

Nature Open Access Debate
Nature Open Access Debate
04/09/2004 03:54 PMNature is hosting a debate on open
access science publishing. At the center of the debate are Public Library of Science and BioMed Central, two open
access journal publishers using the Creative Commons
Attribution License. The PLoS evidence
paper presents a good summary of what is wrong with the current
scholarly publishing model, why open access is important, and an open
access business model.
Even as the much needed debate on open access journals heats up, it
is just one part of a bigger picture where science, creativity, law,
and society collide. Perhaps with this in mind, note the recent post on this
weblog concerning the launch of the Science
Commons exloratory phase.

« A wooden platform path over marshland at Villa Elfvik. »
A few weekends ago, before the weather went to the cold rainy pattern
we've been having lately, Jarkko and I went to Villa Elfvik, a nature reserve and beautiful English-style Jugend
home that has been beautifully restored. The house is gorgeous, but
the nature paths along the Laajalahti nature reserve/marshes is is the
most astonishing feature. As we walked around the grounds, I kept
thinking how unbelieveably close to downtown Helsinki it is and how it
would have been made into strip malls decades ago if it were situated
close to a city in the US. Finns are so lucky to have protected the
natural habitat in and around the metropolitan area before strip malls
became a permanent feature on the global landscape. Of course, like
anything you grow up around and see every day, it takes a fresh eye to
appreciate what you've got.
Inside the house is a small exhibit on natural resources in Espoo, a
cafe (open only on the weekends), some history about the house and its
inhabitants and beautiful art nouveau appointments. The house was
built in 1904 for baroness Elvira Standerskjöld and there are some
events planned to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The paths outside
on the grounds are maintained and scenic and there is a narrow path of
wood planks that leads south through the marshes towards Otaniemi that
even has cows and sheep along the way. One bummer about wading through
a swamp during the not-winter season is mosquitos so it might have
been a good idea to have carried some repellant. There are bird
observation towers at either end of the path which offer a nice view
of the area, too.

Nature on open access publishing
06/09/2004 07:19 PMOne of the kings of scientific publishing, the journal Nature, has recently
launched a forum to bring together articles and information about
open access publishing. They've even got an RSS
feed for updates to the forum.
It's great to see a top journal open a dialogue about a somewhat
controversial issue in the scientific publishing industry. In an age
of ever increasing journal subscription costs and shrinking library
budgets, many smaller journals have embraced the concept of open access publishing and a prominent journal started with the issue
at heart, but many larger publishers have distanced themselves from
the topic. [via furdlog]

Hinterland Who's Who: short nature films
from my childhood
06/26/2004 06:15 AM
"Hinterland Who's Who" was a series of 1960s-era short nature films
that used to air as interstitial material on the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation when I was a kid, maddeningly interrupting the cartoons.
There was a very funny sendup of these on an old SCTV episode, but
other than that, I haven't seen these since I was a small child. Until
today. Now they're all on the Web. Now, the Internet is complete.
