Sending a Robot to Do a Man's work?

Sending a Robot to Do a Man's work?

Sending a Robot to Do a Man's work? 05/04/2004 07:47 AM

NASA is pondering whether or not to send a robot to fix Hubble. With the Shuttles down for human missions, a robotic mission may be the only option to save Hubble. NASA must act fast because the batteries on Hubble will fail sometime before 2008 if not replaced by then. The mission will cost a minimum of $300 million (likely much more to do any useful fixing). The mission would consist of sending a robot atop a rocket for a stop at Hubble with replacement parts like batteries, gyroscopes, and a new engine or two. The problem appears to be that today's robotics are still not as good as humans to deal with cantankerous problems like outer doors that won't close properly allowing light in where light is not supposed to be (not good for a telescope). Robots just can't seem to do what humans do, but they can be cheaper and safer. And, if robots work out for fixing Hubble, it may be a feather in the robot's hat for possible future Moon and Mars missions.

Robot Work Force: A Blessing or a Curse?

Robot Work Force: A Blessing or a Curse? 10/30/2003 11:57 PM
Marshall Brain is stirring up more controversy. Roland Piquepaille notes in his blog that while Brain's last article "Robotic Nation" warned that robots could displace the human workforce causing massive unemployment, now he has done a 180 and is promoting the idea as a Utopian ideal he calls "Robotic Freedom". Imagine a world in which robots do all the work and humans are all on permanent vacation (government welfare). Everyone will become a creative artist and be happy, right? Marshall is a little late in stumbling onto these ideas. Science Fiction readers have been pondering this sort of thing for half a century. And if anyone, including Brain, actually believes "Robotic Freedom" is a good idea, they should read Jack Williamson's 1947 story, With Folded Hands and be very, very afraid. "To serve and obey and guard men from harm..."

Imagine a firefighter scrambling through a burning building, searching for survivors of a devastating explosion. Injured people on the far side of a brick wall, but out of reach. However, the partner on the other side promptly smashes through the wall, clears a path so both can help the survivors. Science fiction perhaps? No, this is exactly the scenario that partners in the PELOTE project have been working on. [PRWEB Apr 15, 2005]

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
11/14/2003 02:51 PM
One of the downsides to the fact that people can work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly stressed out workers are asking their bosses to cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant to do so.

Zimran Ahmed writes that he doesn't think SMS will do well in the US, but cameras will. I find SMS text-entry slow and painful, and belive it's popularity in Europe stems in large part from the high per-minute charges Europeans endure. But taking a picture with your phone and mailing it to someone is quick and easy, so I think it will prove quite popular. In Europe you are generally charged per second (not per minute), so giving a quick...

Google sending prefetch cookies

Google sending prefetch cookies 04/04/2005 10:30 AM
Cameo
Google & Firefox == Evil & Annoying

I recently did a search at google for "radio shack". To my surprise, I received a cookie setting request from radio shack.com. This had never happened before- and radio shack also happened to be a sponsored link. I did other searches, such as "ford", "sony", and even "girl scouts"- and each time, the top link requested a cookie to be set. Since Girl Scouts did not have a sponsored link- I realised it must only be the top link that sets a cookie. It turned out that Mozilla browsers (that includes firefox) and Google have both enabled prefetch- although it would seem that Google only recently enabled it- as this is a new occurrence. I always verify the setting of cookies- so this makes every google search into an annoying cookie refusal time waste. It would also seem that prefetching is turned on my default in firefox- and is very unintuitive to turn off.

So- for my friends that automatically accept cookies- you are now downloading a page and a cookie nearly every time you use google and firefox together.

And even though I never clicked on their link- and never wanted to visit their site- I'm downloading the top link of my search results to my harddrive every time I do a Google search.

This makes me dislike not only Mozilla- but Google as well.

There is a discussion about this on WebmasterWorld.com as well. This feels annoying and since it's more fun to pick on Google than Microsoft these days, I'm blogging it.

Say what you will about MSN. But before they came about the world of WebTV was equal to the wild west. Back in the 90’s I was among the computer owners that also owned a WebTV box. I was also very much ‘aware of’ the WebTV signature codes that were being embedded by certain users that allowed malicious perps to ‘bomb’ another’s box by embedding a payload via crescendo music tags. MSN took care of…
