Can someone ping this entry with a TrackBack? Let me know what (if any) error you get. A few folks have told me that my TB is broken and I seem to be getting way fewer TrackBacks that normal. I suspect it's related to my recent upgrade to MT 2.63 but am not sure where to begin debugging this yet. I will have to search around a bit in the morning and see if this is some sort of known...

Debian: Where should
we
we should go from
here?
06/17/2005 06:46 PM
Debian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential, Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.

Accepting Feed Requests

"...I've been asked a number of times by now whether I could produce a custom news feed for site XYZ, and until now I've declined most of the times. But today I thought 'heck, why not'. :)

Now, I've thought about the how. Hosting feeds costs money, scraping feeds is taking time, and maintaining a feed can take some time as well. So, I'm offering you the following service. First read the list of things you get, then see whether you'd be willing to shell out a small one-time fee of €2." [feedpalooza journal, via Boing Boing]

I submitted two requests for my local newspapers (hop a cluetrain, newspaper guys!), but I have to wait for a PayPal transfer to go through before getting the URLs. Joe Hall, on the other hand, was much faster at this and he had Carlo create a feed for Dave Farber's Interesting People mailing list! Some good stuff should come out of this offer, and hopefully it will further illuminate the demand in order to increase the supply.

Iraqi first strike before the American

Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?
03/15/2003 04:09 AM
ABC news is reporting that the US is worried that Iraq may strike first before we can strike first. I don't wish any harm on the American troops overseas (or on the poor Iraqi soldiers either, for that matter), but the logic of the outrage about this escapes me. We are proclaiming our right to strike preemptively and unilaterally, where we see a threat that might appear in the future, and we are actively preparing to strike at Iraq. What logic allows us to be outraged if Iraq reacts to this threat by striking at the troops ringing her borders? Incidents like these are why the Europeans have concluded that Americans have gone off their rockers....

washingtonpost.com - ZHULUBE, Zimbabwe -- Hundreds of bags of cornmeal were stacked in front of a bar near here this month, rising as high as its roof. The only problem for the hungry people of this drought-stricken area was that the food, like the bar, was controlled by officials from the ruling party. With a crucial election nearing, they weren't about to give it to just anyone.

Ah, those crazy kids. They love the video games, so of course they'll also love a PC/Mac video game that subtly teaches them about world hunger. That's what the United Nations hopes will happen with the free release of "Food Force," a game that was developed by the U.N.'s World Food Programme. We're always skeptical of bureaucrats who co-opt new media for transparent purposes. People -- especially kids -- tend to see right through them. But you never know. The success of "Amer ica's Army" shows that if done well, a government-esque game can succeed regardless of its ulterior motives.

Gulf War II or Second Gulf War?

Gulf War II or Second Gulf War? 03/20/2003 11:56 AM
First up, a handy Gulf War II scorecard (via Oskar van Rijswijk's weblog). Second, the requisite Blogdexxed Orwellian link du jour. Thirdly, here is a fascinating piece on the President's real goal in Iraq. I researched the articles the author referred to, and I agree that that this group of conservatives, who are now running the country, want to be the world's policemen. (via WebWord). They seem to be sincere in their idealism (although it doesn't conflict with business interests since that's a large part of what their idealism is about) and that scares me more than anything. And, as an apropos of nothing kicker, you can go to the Making Computers Talk page at IBM and make it say naughty things for a cheap laugh....
